We’re expanding access to urgent care services for our community.

Beginning tomorrow and continuing through Jan. 3, 2027, our Urgent Care Centre (9401 Jane St.) will offer extended weekend hours every Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

From sports injuries and suspected fractures to infections, fevers, coughs and colds, our team is here to help with a range of non-life-threatening conditions. We offer assessment, X-rays, casting and stitches, with no referral or appointment needed.

Remember: if it’s life-threatening, don’t hesitate – call 911 or head to your closest Emergency Department.

Volunteers bring comfort, kindness and connection to our hospitals every day, and Dorothy is a wonderful example of the difference one person can make.

After spending 20 years working in various departments at Mackenzie Health, Dorothy came back to give back. Now a volunteer, she welcomes and guides patients arriving for X-rays, offering a friendly, reassuring presence when they need it most.

“Whether someone needs directions, a listening ear or simply a smile, I want them to feel supported," says Dorothy. "Helping people who may be in pain or feeling worried and seeing their relief when they're met with kindness is what makes volunteering so meaningful to me."

And her impact doesn’t stop there. Dorothy also helps with monthly dog therapy visits, one of her favourite parts of volunteering. Named the 2025 Volunteer Rookie of the Year, she brings warmth, compassion and joy to patients, visitors and staff.

Thank you, Dorothy, for giving your time and heart to our community. 💙

When it comes to breast cancer, misinformation can sometimes prevent people from getting screened or recognizing potential warning signs. Learning the facts can help you make informed decisions about your health.

“There are many misconceptions about breast cancer,” says Dr. Dhruvin Hirpara, Surgical Oncologist at Mackenzie Health. “Knowing the facts can help you take steps to reduce your risk and prioritize your health.”

❌ MYTH: I don’t have a family history, so I don’t need screening.
✅ FACT: Breast cancer can affect anyone. About 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed in their lifetime, regardless of family history.

❌ MYTH: I’m too young to get breast cancer.
✅ FACT: While risk increases with age, breast cancer can occur in younger adults too.

❌ MYTH: Breast pain means I have cancer.
✅ FACT: Breast pain is common and is not usually a sign of breast cancer, but any persistent concerns should be discussed with your doctor.

❌ MYTH: Sugar causes breast cancer.
✅ FACT: Sugar does not directly cause breast cancer, but excess sugar can contribute to obesity and other health conditions that may increase cancer risk.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, talk to your health care provider about screening and make healthy lifestyle choices that support your long-term health. 💗

With shorter days and earlier sunsets, visibility becomes a bigger safety concern. Taking a few precautions can help prevent serious injuries this season.

As a registered nurse in our Critical Care Unit at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, Jessica sees firsthand how quickly serious injuries can happen, and the impact they can have on patients and families.

“Something as simple as improving visibility or slowing down when conditions change can help prevent injuries before they happen,” says Jessica.

As daylight hours decrease:

🔦 Ensure outdoor walkways and entrances are well lit
🚶 Wear reflective clothing when walking at night
🚗 Slow down and stay alert in low-light conditions
📱 Put distractions away while walking or driving
🍁 Watch for uneven surfaces hidden by fallen leaves

During Canadian Intensive Care Week, we recognize and thank our Critical Care team for their skill, compassion and dedication to caring for patients with serious illness and injury.

Visiting someone in hospital? With cold and flu season here, a few simple steps can help protect your loved one and those around them. Shirin, an Infection Control Practitioner at Mackenzie Health, shares what to do — and what to avoid — to help prevent the spread of germs during your visit:

✅ DO:
• Clean your hands when entering and leaving the hospital
• Follow posted infection prevention and control signage
• Cover your coughs and sneezes
• Wear a mask if required or requested
• Get your flu and COVID vaccines

❌ DON'T:
• Visit if you have cold, flu or other infectious symptoms
• Ignore visitor restrictions or precautions in patient-care areas
• Visit loved ones when you are feeling unwell

During National Infection Control Week, we thank our Infection Prevention and Control team. Their expertise, vigilance and dedication help keep our hospitals safe every day, protecting patients, staff, physicians and visitors alike.

Perinatal Bereavement Awareness Day is a time to honour the babies who are forever loved and remember the families who carry them in their hearts every day. It is also an opportunity to acknowledge the profound grief that follows pregnancy and infant loss, and the compassion that can help families feel supported during some of life's most difficult moments.

At Mackenzie Health, our Labour and Delivery team is there to support families through their bereavement journey, ensuring every baby is treated with dignity, every family's loss is acknowledged and every parent feels cared for and supported.

"While we cannot take away a family's pain or change the outcome, we can make a meaningful difference in how they experience our care," says Nicole, Registered Nurse. "Our goal is to ensure every baby is remembered and that parents leave knowing their baby mattered, was deeply loved and will always be remembered."

Today, we hold space for all those who have experienced the loss of a baby and honour the enduring love that remains.
