Body-doubling isn't some new AD[H]D phenomenon. It is certainly not a neurodivergent life or productivity hack.

It's ANCESTRAL!

I have to be honest, when a friend first told me of body-doubling I did a hard eye roll. Not because I don't think it has validity, I know it does. Humans are wired for connection, it's in our blueprint.

So body-doubling may be a new term, but it isn't something new at all. It is leveraging the very thing that kept us alive and helped us thrive as a species - being in community. Togetherness.

So yes, Linda Anderson gave the world a clever name but let's not forget the origins of it. And perhaps more importantly, a reminder, humans thrive when we are in connection and community with other safe humans. If you get tasks done or work better with others around you, this doesn't make you weird. This doesn't make you different. This makes you human, one who has access to a blueprint that dates back thousands of years. πŸ«†πŸ«‚πŸ‘―β€β™€οΈπŸŒŒπŸͺ¬

Excuse my language but this is the s**t that I find so damn fascinating!

While I often talk about the relationship between neurodivergence and eating disorders because of my lived experience, one of the very first things I researched after my AD[H]D diagnosis was the relationship between infantile colic and my neurotype.

As the story goes from my parents who survived those 8 months of constant crying and sleep deprivation, I was one uncomfortable and gassy baby! πŸ’¨β˜ οΈπŸ’© (Sidenote: my mother will say it was 11 months but I also had the chicken pox and a general disdain for the outfits she put me in so I'm carving off 3 months πŸ˜‚). Anyways...

I found one conference paper which I refer to in these slides titled, Uneasy child: is there any relationship between infantile colic during infancy and adhd later? The sample size is small w/ 114 children and a control group of 149 but the outcomes show a statistical significance in infants with IC and a later diagnosis of AD[H]D. It's something.

As we know, not much can be concluded with one research paper but what I'm most intrigued about is the role the gut microbiome plays in both IC and AD[H]D. This is where exciting emerging research is going, looking at the health of the gut as an underlying mechanism and how bio-individual interventions can support symptom management and relief for both.

So is infantile colic a potential precursor to AD[H]D? I don't know. But what I can say is the research is pointing to the health of the gut as factors for both.

AD[H]D interests with eating disorder recovery in ways that are often underestimated and under-supported.

Research published in the European Eating Disorders Review found that patients with more intense AD[H]D symptoms have significantly more difficulty recovering from co-occurring eating disorders, with the relationship described as bidirectional...each condition amplifying the other.

Interesting enough...one study found that for most patients, an overall improvement in addictive disorders was observed within 6 months of receiving an AD[H]D diagnosis. What might this suggest?

What if that identification and further understanding is in some way therapeutic in itself. I can tell you it was for me. What if knowing is a form of relief and release?

Understanding and identifying there's something deeper going on in the body opens a door to being seen (and seeing yourself) more accurately. And that changes outcomes.

Knowledge is power in eating disorder recovery. Understanding how your brain and nervous system are uniquely wired isn't just "good to know" it's essential. It's clinical intelligence that shapes the entire recovery process. πŸ“’πŸ“’πŸ“’

Since 1990, there have been over 125,000 publications (books, research papers, conference papers, and other) shared in multiple different languages that touch on eating disorders, ADHD, and other neurodivergent conditions.

While the DSM-5 appropriately places OCD in its own category, many would argue and speculate that it is infact a neurodivergent condition that shares many neurobiological features and has significant overlap with ADHD and ASD.

While the prevalence of people experiencing an eating disorder along with ADHD and OCD is quite high, with each impacting the other in complex ways, what is not clear is, outside of researchers, how many doctors and clinicians know about this connection and know when to screen for either or both?

Is there a standard screening protocol anywhere for when a young person enters a doctor's office with disordered eating or a full-blown eating disorder, outside of prescribing a stimulant?

Okay, maybe that was a low blow, but these are questions I believe those of us working in this community and sector need to start asking.

Are doctors working within the eating disorder space well versed in the differentiation between ADHD symptoms, OCD symptoms and eating disorder symptoms?

There should be standardized care and screening... not a one size fits all approach, but a flexible process to ensure people are getting the right diagnoses, ensuring they have access to the supports, medications, and professionals they need.

Because we know, without a diagnosis, access to resources and early intervention strategies become limited, people fall through the cracks, and their chances of recovery significantly decrease.

Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada which intentionally takes place on the day of summer solstice, a time of year that holds deep cultural significance for Indigenous communities.

For many Indigenous folks, today is a day of reflection, community, ceremony, and celebration.

I love learning about Indigenous cultures here in Canada and specifically on Treaty 6 Territory where I live, work, and benefit.

I admire the unique distinctions in ceremony and rituals, the togetherness that is woven into their families and communities despite attempted erasure. I am deeply moved by the drumming and songs. The traditional regalia is breath taking. Their roots run deep across Turtle Island and their connection to this land is deeply spiritual and cultural - they are the keepers of this land let's make no mistake of that.

The oral history and storytelling - if you have ever had the honour of listening to Elders, there is a deep wisdom they hold that invites you to listen beyond your ears but with an open heart.

Oddly enough, learning about Indigenous cultures here, has in part inspired me to connect more deeply to my roots as a 3rd and 4th generation settler.

It is will the deepest of gratitude that I share three poems from a few of my favourite Indigenous poets whose voices and words are inspiring, moving, and powerful. How lucky are we to share and celebrate their talent.

Happy National Indigenous Peoples day! πŸͺΆπŸ§‘

We have officially hit our mid-point as we host June's Meeting of Minds: The Thriving Practice Edition before the summer break!

EFT International members, please join us tomorrow, Wednesday, June 17th, as co-host Naghma Qureshi interviews Accredited Certified Advanced EFT Practitioner and Mentor, Alicky Gravell.

With over 30 years of experience as an integrated therapist that includes a foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Alicky combines the wisdom of EFT Tapping with many somatic therapies and bioenergetic healing to help and guide clients.

In a talk titled, "Curiosity Over Strategy", Alicky will explore different ways of building a thriving practice, one rooted in curiosity, self-work, trust, and flow rather than fixed strategies. Drawing from her own experience, she will also share how allowing the work to unfold naturally can shape both meaningful client outcomes and sustainable growth.

With new research and science to share, I'm excited to spend an evening with the alumni crew talking about Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) Tapping and the biological mechanisms that make this tool so effective for stress reduction, anxiety, overwhelm, and so much more!

Because all of my workshops are experiential, we will be applying this tool in real time to support folks where they are at in their recovery journey.

The best part? It's a two part series, which means we are just expanding the learning and fun!

See you Wednesday, alumni! πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ

It's that time!

I am absolutely thrilled to be back in the hosting chair for Meeting of Minds: The Thriving Practice Edition - and this May's conversation is one I am very much looking forward to.

It is a true privilege and honour to interview my dear friend and colleague Georgie Hunt Barnwell for what I know will be an inspiring and deeply resonant discussion titled "Leveraging Partnerships to Build Your Practice."

As the saying goes...β€œIf you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.” Georgie knows the power of partnerships for growing a business. She has leveraged and fostered an important business relationship that allows her to support women experiencing cancer from across the globe. This opportunity has opened additional doors for her, including an invitation to speak at the Calm Over Cancer Summit in 2025.

Georgie will also share some deeply personal insights into her own work with her inner critic and a debilitating belief that she needed to be "fixed." Through her own personal transformation, she has found that her professional growth and success have been a byproduct of her personal journey and evolution. As her relationship with herself has deepened, so too has the depth of her work and practice with clients. For Georgie, EFT isn't just a self-regulation tool, but rather a pathway for deep and lasting transformation - both personally and professionally.

EFT International members, the countdown is on as we go live on Wednesday, May 20th @ 6PM UK time!

If you haven't yet registered, log in through www.eftinternational.org > Members Area > Community > Meeting of Minds Series > Sign-up Here button.

See you on Wednesday!
