October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast cancer screening through the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) is recommended every two years for people ages 40–74. If you have a family history of breast cancer, you are considered high-risk and eligible for earlier screening, starting at age 30 with a referral from your healthcare provider.

You can access screening by visiting your nursing station or calling the OBSP Appointment Booking Line at 1-800-668-9304.

There is also the Screen for Life Coach, a mobile cancer screening bus that travels within Northwestern Ontario. See their schedule here.: https://loom.ly/C7eXzRA

Did you know that fire smoke contains toxic gases that can make you very sick and make it difficult to breathe?

When a fire starts, do not wait to see how much smoke there is. Get outside right away.

Remember:
-Get out as quickly and safely as possible.
-Stay low if you are moving through smoke.
-Once you are outside, stay outside.
-Never go back inside to get people, pets or belongings. Call for help and let trained responders handle the fire.

The faster you get away from the smoke, the less exposure you will have.

Get Out. Stay Out. Be Fire Safe!

Did You Know?

Homes today can burn and become unsafe more quickly than homes built 50 years ago because of changes in building materials and household furnishings.

That means when a fire starts, you may have very little time to get out safely.

SLFNHA encourages all community members to:
-Make a fire escape plan.
-Know at least two ways out, when possible.
-Practice your escape plan with everyone in your home.
-Make sure smoke alarms are working, and everyone knows what the alarm sounds like.

If a fire starts, get outside right away and stay outside. Never go back inside.

Take time today to practice your family’s escape plan.

Be Prepared. Be Fire Safe!
