Check out quirky medical advances and odd applications of natural processes in the weird and wondeful world of basic science at Medical News Bulletin. Tell us what you think in the comments!

Bacteria, they’re just like us, eh? Well not really, but one of the features we do share, is that viruses love to hijack our cellular machinery. Bacterial viruses are big trouble for their bacterial hosts, but  scientists are taking advantage of their ability to target specific cell types to deve...

Migraines are another potential result of fluctuating female s*x hormones. Female s*x hormones and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) appear to be responsible for the onset of migraines. Fluctuating s*x hormone levels, particularly those of estrogen, may promote the activity of CGRP and thus trigger migraines. Compared to women without migraines, women who experienced migraines had higher amounts of CGRP in their blood and tear fluid during their periods, which further supports this relationship.

Breakthrough research could mean personalized cancer vaccines become a reality. Melanoma, an aggressive type of skin cancer, arises from the continuous growth of pigment-producing skin cells. With stage IV having a five-year survival rate of 16.2%, effective treatments are needed promptly. Conventional treatment supplemented with a personalized, anti-melanoma vaccine showed great promise in a recent clinical trial. The combination led to better clinical outcomes than conventional treatment on its own. These early findings provide hope for the future and lay the framework for larger clinical studies.

Guillain-Barré syndrome is an autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system attacks healthy tissues. In Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), the immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system. The peripheral nervous system controls the information sent from organs and other parts of your body back to your brain, and vice versa, like movements, respiration, and heartbeat. GBS is a rare neurological disorder that can be dangerous and sometimes fatal.

In 2020, 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer, of which 685,000 died. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women worldwide. Although 93% of women with breast cancer are over 40, it is the younger patients who have aggressive cancers with a higher risk of recurrence and death.

Younger patient’s have a 5-year relative survival for cancer stages 1 to 2 is 84% versus 92% for older women, 47% versus 55% for stage 3, and 15% versus 20% for stage 4. The main reason for this phenomenon is that genetic mutations associated with breast cancer are more common in younger patients.

Scientists have recently observed that retinoids, a chemical compound found in vitamin A, can help people experiencing acute pancreatitis as an adverse drug effect of asparaginase.

A diet rich in vitamin A may be a solution to combat the life-threatening complications of acute pancreatitis from the drug asparaginase. Asparaginase is the drug of choice for treating acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). ALL is the most common cancer in children and young adults. Moreover, drug-induced pancreatitis is among the leading causes of acute pancreatitis in children.

If you have ever had a cut, tooth extraction, or been bruised, you know the importance of your body’s ability to form a clot and stop that bleeding. Usually, when someone bleeds, platelets (tiny blood cells) and proteins called clotting factors come together in a series of events leading to clot formation. Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Hemgenix as a one-time gene therapy for adults with hemophilia B, a condition that affects blood clotting.

Obesity rates are a massive global health problem. Unfortunately, there are few medications available to manage obesity. Those struggling with obesity face health conditions like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, fatty liver disease, and a shortened life expectancy. Because so many people live with obesity and the disease’s collateral conditions, the market for weight loss products and drugs is highly competitive.

No typical presentation exists, but a new blood test could detect endometriosis. Endometriosis is a disease affecting millions of women. Endometriosis and its symptoms are varied and cause some women intense pain and problems conceiving children.

Current standards require surgery for a final diagnosis of this disease. Doctors have been trying to find new ways of accomplishing similar outcomes with less invasive techniques. A recent study shows promising results in analyzing blood biomarkers to diagnose those with the condition. Early detection could identify these patients earlier and get them started on treatment sooner.

Leukemia is a form of cancer with an annual diagnosis rate of 14.1 people per 100,000 of the population, with nearly half of these cases (6.0 per 100,000) dying from the disease. People over 55 and under 15 are the population group in which this condition is most common.

Leukemia is a systemic malignant (cancerous) lesion of the red bone marrow during which healthy leukocytes (white blood cells involved in immunity) are replaced by altered cells. Abnormal leukocytes do not perform their proper functions but continue to divide. This division increases the number of abnormal cells. These abnormal cells move with the blood to pe*****te body organs, causing pathological like differentiating (changing their cells) into cancer.

Trillions of bacteria live in our bodies in a symbiotic relationship.1 So, what does this symbiotic relationship look like? This relationship is one in which bacteria rely on our bodies to exist, and we support each other's health and daily needs. For example, our large intestines provide a home to many bacteria. Some of these bacteria are responsible for creating neurotransmitters and vitamins, some of which help our bodies absorb antioxidants to decrease inflammation. However, not all bacteria benefit our health. Many bacteria do not interact with us in a symbiotic relationship, instead, they can be harmful and lead to disease.
