What a night! 💙

Thank you to everyone who joined us Wednesday evening for the Cancer Rehab Info Night. We were grateful to welcome you and your families for an evening of learning, conversation and connection.

Dr. Meaghan Labine, our CEO and Medical Director, explored recovery after cancer treatment, including side effects some people notice, signs to discuss with their care team, and rehabilitation therapies that may help. Guests also learned what a session of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is like, about OHIP coverage, and how to get referred.

“The path to wellness is rarely a straight line.”

That message helped bring the evening together. Recovery looks different for everyone, and we are proud to work alongside your cancer care team to support you here in Northwestern Ontario.

We also shared a look at what’s ahead for Modern Medical. We are exploring opportunities to expand our clinical services beyond HBOT, offering patients a broader range of treatment options to support recovery and advance the healing process. We are excited about the possibilities and grateful to our community for being part of this journey.

To our team and everyone who joined us, thank you for making time to learn and connect with us. 💙

We are so grateful to have been part of the 2026 Luncheon of Hope presented by on October 16, supporting local breast cancer care through the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation Foundation's Northern Cancer Fund. This year's theme, Hope Finds Its Silver Lining, filled the room at the Superior Inn.

It was an honour to be this year's Speaker Sponsor and to help bring Kim MacDonald of The Weather Network to Thunder Bay. Thank you, Kim, for sharing your breast cancer journey with such honesty and warmth, including your choice to cover your mastectomy scars with sunflowers and reclaim your body on your own terms.

Dr. Meaghan Labine, our founder and Medical Director, had the privilege of introducing Kim. She spoke about her mother, who lived with cancer for many years, and how that experience shaped the physician she is today. Her message was that recovery after cancer is about more than healing the body. It is also about rediscovering what matters and building a life that reflects who you are now.

That belief is at the heart of Modern Medical. For selected patients living with radiation injury, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) can support tissue repair and healing alongside their existing care. We are working to grow our cancer survivorship and rehabilitation services, so that more of this support is available close to home in Northwestern Ontario.

Dr. Labine, Jim Stadey and Tina Quinn were grateful to welcome so many of you at our booth and to hear your stories. We were also honoured to share our table with guests and patrons of Modern Medical. Your conversation and enthusiasm made the afternoon especially meaningful.

Together, this year's luncheon raised $35,289.66 for the Northern Cancer Fund. Thank you to Haley, Connor and the whole Health Sciences Foundation team for creating such a special day, to Tbaytel and Alterna Savings for making it possible, and to everyone who came out to support local cancer care.

Modern Medical began with a daughter looking for ways to help her mother.

In 2015, our founder, Dr. Meaghan Labine , was a second-year medical student at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM), helping her parents operate Birch Lake Lodge, their fly-in fishing lodge near Red Lake, Ontario. Her mother had wounds on both legs that had not healed despite more than a year of wound care.

Using satellite internet at the lodge, Dr. Labine began researching innovative treatment options. That search introduced her to hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). She purchased a portable chamber and set it up at the lodge, where her mother used it over the summer alongside her regular wound care. By the end of the summer, her mother’s wounds had almost completely healed, inspiring Dr. Labine to explore medical-grade HBOT further.

By October 2015, she had written her first business plan to bring a hyperbaric oxygen therapy clinic to Northwestern Ontario.

The idea stayed with her through medical school, residency and years of caring for patients across the region. In 2023, she purchased 898 Alloy Place in Thunder Bay, the future home of Modern Medical Hyperbaric Clinic. After two years of planning and construction, we welcomed our first patients on September 23, 2025.

Her mother passed away in August 2024, before the clinic opened. Her family’s support had been part of the journey from the beginning.

This month, we celebrate one year of serving our community and share the story that brought us here. What began with a search for help with non-healing wounds grew into a clinic offering HBOT for selected non-healing wounds and delayed radiation injury. Alongside our cancer rehabilitation services, this care supports healing and recovery, bringing more treatment options closer to home.

On September 23, 2025, we treated our first patient.

Today we’re celebrating one year in service with our patients and staff, and yes, there is cake! 🎂

When we opened our doors at 898 Alloy Place, Modern Medical became Northwestern Ontario’s first hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) facility, bringing this care closer to home for our community.

Thank you to the referring physicians who placed their trust in us, the partners who took the time to learn about our work, and especially the patients who trusted us with their care. To our staff, thank you for making our patients feel welcome and supported every day.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll share how the clinic came together, introduce the team behind the care, and explain what HBOT is and who it can help. Follow along as we look back on our first year!

St. Joseph's Care Group brought healthcare providers together in Thunder Bay for the Offloading and Diabetic Wound Management Workshop.

On behalf of Modern Medical, our Physician Assistant, Laura Elizabeth, attended to build our wound care skills and strengthen relationships with allied care providers.

Offloading reduces pressure on an affected area of the body to help a wound heal. At Modern Medical, we are working to combine these wound care approaches with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), which can enhance healing in selected non-healing wounds.

Together, these approaches support more comprehensive care closer to home in Northwestern Ontario.

Thank you to Seona Ferlong and the North West Regional Wound Care Program team!

St. Joseph's Care Group and Wounds Canada brought hands-on wound care training to Thunder Bay through the Regional Wound Care Skills Symposium.

Our CEO and Medical Director, Dr. Meaghan Labine, attended the inaugural Best Practice Approach to Wound Debridement and Minor Surgical Procedures Skills Lab, practicing debridement, biopsy and suturing.

At Modern Medical, we are building our wound care skills alongside hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), which can enhance healing in selected non-healing wounds as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

We also welcomed the Wounds Canada faculty for a clinic tour and a conversation about combining our services to support patients closer to home in Northwestern Ontario.

Thank you to Wounds Canada, Seona Furlong and the North West Regional Wound Care Program team!

New hope for healing skin grafts and flaps

A large 2026 review pooling 24 studies and 2,246 patients found that hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) may help support the healing and survival of skin grafts and flaps that are struggling to recover after surgery. The researchers gave a strong recommendation for using HBOT before and after surgery to support healing and possibly reduce the need for repeat procedures.

This finding comes from a 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Global Open (PRS Global Open).

HBOT is OHIP recognized in Ontario. Ask your physician for a referral to Modern Medical Hyperbaric Clinic in Thunder Bay to find out if it may be right for you.
