One of the most meaningful moments for me at The Ultimate Curly Hair Experience was standing at our Kumasi Cosmetics booth and sharing the story behind my own hair journey. 🤎
For 17 years, I struggled with hair loss.
I was dealing with uterine fibroids, cysts and endometriosis, which caused extremely heavy periods. My iron became severely low and I developed anemia—and for years, I never made the connection between what was happening inside my body and what I was seeing in my hair.
Instead, I blamed myself. Maybe I didn’t take care of my hair properly. Maybe I used the wrong product. Maybe I had somehow damaged it beyond repair. There was even a point when I genuinely believed that beautiful, growing hair simply wasn’t meant for me.
Eventually, learning how much my health and iron levels could affect my hair brought me an unexpected sense of peace. I stopped being at war with my hair.
Around that time, my mother developed what would eventually become the Kumasi Cosmetics Fenugreek Herbal Deep Conditioner for our family’s personal use.
And me? I had ZERO expectations. 😂 🙅🏽♀️I had my lace fronts, I loved them, and my focus had shifted to my health and preparing for my myomectomy.
For about six months, my mother consistently used her Fenugreek Herbal Deep Conditioner on my hair. I wasn’t checking length. I wasn’t taking progress pictures. Half the time I was just grateful somebody else was washing and braiding my hair underneath my wigs. 😂
Then one evening, instead of cornrowing my hair, my mother put it into plaits. She stopped. She couldn’t believe how thick and long my hair had become. She took a picture and told me to look.
I DIDN’T EVEN WANT TO. 😭 After years of disappointment, I didn’t want another reason to get my hopes up. But eventually I looked at the picture.
My hair looked SWOLLEN. 😂 And I mean that in the BEST possible way. It was THICK. It was noticeably longer. And because I’d become so accustomed to seeing my hair tucked away in cornrows underneath wigs, I hadn’t realized how much progress it had made.
That experience changed the way I looked at my hair forever—and became part of the story behind Kumasi Cosmetics Inc. 🌿
