Health Canada Decision on Oral COVID-19 Drugs Likely Weeks Away 🇨🇦
💊The antiviral pills, known as Paxlovid & Molnupiravir, will be available by prescription only for those with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 who are at high risk for becoming severely ill, including hospitalization or death
🔸This includes older people and those with other health conditions like heart disease, cancer or diabetes that make them more vulnerable
🔸Both drugs inhibit viral replication, but in very different ways
PAXLOVID
▪️Paxlovid is a combination of two antiviral pills
▪️Results from the 2,246 -person clinical trial found it was 88% effective at preventing hospitalizations or deaths due to COVID-19 when compared to placebo
Limitations
▪️Drug interactions: certain people may be unable to safely take Paxlovid (with liver & kidney issues)
▪️the component ritonavir can also result in the elevation of the blood levels of other drugs people might be taking, possibly to dangerous levels
(e.g. blood thinners, antiarrhythmics & blood pressure medications)
MOLNUPIRAVIR
▪️Molnupiravir trial showed a 30% reduction in hospitalizations & death
▪️NO known drug interactions
Bottom Line
✅ Paxlovid & Molnupiravir are the first two oral medications available for treating mild or moderate COVID-19 in high-risk people
✅ should be started within 5 days of first feeling symptoms
✅ are in limited supply & so health care providers will need to determine the best course of treatment for patients based on eligibility criteria
✅ can be taken at home & hopefully will help reduce the significant pressures facing our healthcare & hospital systems
‼️Neither medication is a substitute for vaccination in individuals for whom COVID-19 vaccine & a booster dose are recommended ‼️

Early indications suggest rapid tests work on Omicron but only if your viral load is high at the time.
You need to reach a certain threshold before any test — PCR or rapid — can detect your infection.
Experts recommend isolating first, then taking at least two rapid tests, spaced a day or two apart.

During the holidays season it’s important to remind everyone what symptoms of COVID-19 are. While vaccination (and boosters) is our first line of prevention, there is always a risk you may get ill. That risk is substantially higher if you remain unvaccinated.
With Omicron, there has been some speculation that the symptoms are different than that of previous variants, but in reality, there is quite a bit of commonality.
According to data from South Africa and the US, the most common symptoms of COVID-19 due to the Omicron variant are: sore or scratchy throat, cough, fatigue, and congestion or runny nose.
There have been some early reports that unvaccinated individuals who get Omicron more frequently develop shortness of breath and difficulty breathing, as well as fever, when compared to vaccinated individuals.
Of course, there are also other, less common, symptoms of COVID-19 that may be present as well, such as GI symptoms, body aches, and in more severe cases, bluish lips/skin, pneumonia, and chest pain.
If you present with early symptoms consistent with COVID-19, consider getting tested as soon as possible.

A new variant of COVID-19 that has been detected in South Africa is a "cause for concern," top virologists have warned.
The B.1.1.529 variant, named 'Omicron' by the World Health Organization (WHO), has been described as having an "extremely high" number of mutations, according to South African scientists who first detected the Beta variant.
The strain has been detected in a number of coronavirus cases in South Africa and is now believed to be in Europe.
The WHO subsequently classified the new Omicron strain as a "variant of concern" today.
It is as yet unclear how effective vaccines will be against it.
Health Canada has just authorized the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for kids 5-11.
Health Canada has placed terms and conditions requiring Pfizer-BioNTech to continue providing information to Health Canada on the safety and efficacy of the vaccine in this younger age group. This will provide the Department with more data from ongoing studies and real-world use to ensure that the benefits of the vaccine continue to outweigh any risks, as well as to detect any potential new safety signals in any age group.
