One of the worst feelings…

One of the worst feelings you can experience when you are dealing with IBS occurs when someone who doesn’t understand your situation says or does something that shows complete lack of consideration or empathy for what you are dealing with.

It can be a simple thing like a store not letting you use their bathroom. Or a friend giving you a hard time because you cancel plans last minute.

I still remember this one incidence that occurred when I was young, someone pointed to my belly and declared that I was fat, when in fact I wasn’t. I had slim arms and legs but my belly was bloated and round – NOT because I was fat but because my gut was swollen and tender and full of gas. That moment has stayed with me to this day.

In the moment that like you just want to cry but you know that engaging with them will just make the situation worse.

This is one of the reasons why I created the Live Well With Lara Gut Health community.

Because I get it.

I understand the ignorance, insensitive comments or lack of empathy that can make IBS seem so much worse.

So I just wanted to remind you that this is a safe place.

You are welcome here AND we understand.

I’m finding it is getting increasingly difficult to get good information online about gut health.

More and more the things at the top of the search bar are sponsored by big conglomerates that give out the same old tired information…many of them pointing to a one-sided solution that only looks to treat symptoms and not get to the root cause which is the health of the microbiome.

And the search engines never factor in that each person with IBS has a unique set of symptoms.

1. Your IBS isn't Getting Better on Its Own

If you have been dealing with IBS for more than a few months - it's been too long. I have actually had a client decide to NOT deal with their gut health issues because it isn’t “that'' bad YET! How does waiting until things get worse make any sense? It is much easier to transform IBS at its earlier stages, rather than after it has progressed further…

You May Have Been Told These Symptoms Are Not Related…But They Are

Have you ever gone to your doctor with weird symptoms and they tell you they are unrelated?

I hear this happening all the time because our medical system is set up in such a way that it is assumed that symptoms in different parts of the body or mind are probably not related to each other.

If you are experiencing mood disorders such as anxiety or depression, food sensitivities and / or chronic acid reflux / GERD - you should know these are all symptoms of IBS.

I approach IBS from the perspective that “everything is related” because your digestive system is intrinsically linked to the function and health of the rest of your body.

In the end it doesn’t really matter except from the point of validation because my whole approach is to treat the root cause of ALL the symptoms rather than patching symptoms one by one.

I love it when my clients come to me for their gut health but find that once they start on my protocol their mental health also improves.

They are always surprised when this happens but this is simply confirmation to me that we are really getting to the root of the issue and their whole health is being transformed.

The Biggest Misconception That Kept Me Stuck

I don’t know who needs to hear this but if you are feeling stuck in overwhelm about your gut health symptoms...keep reading.

What I need you to understand is that what you are experiencing is just the symptom of something much bigger going on beneath the surface.

Symptoms do not exist in isolation.

They are never without cause…

And unless you deal with the actual root cause of your IBS… you will be stuck in a cycle of symptom patching forever.

I say this because one of the biggest misconceptions that kept me stuck was this idea that if I just got my symptoms under control the problem would go away.

This “solution” didn’t take into account the dysbiosis behind the symptoms.

Dysbiosis is when the balance of bacteria in the gut shifts from mostly “good” types to mostly “bad” types. These bad bacteria create lots of gas which causes the bloating and abdominal discomfort in IBS. And depending on which type of gas they produce (methane or hydrogen), this can result in constipation or diarrhea.

This meant that despite all my efforts to patch all my symptoms…they would return leaving me feeling like I was back at square one.

It wasn’t until I started dealing with the dysbiosis that I was able to achieve more permanent results.

Action is Better than Inaction

Whenever you try something new there is always a risk…

You might fail…
You might fall flat on your face
You might invest time and money into solutions to improve your IBS and it might not work

OR

This could be the one thing that actually works
The one thing that makes your gut symptoms a thing of the past
The one thing that changes everything
The one thing that allows you to do that thing that you always said you wanted to do…

For me, I wanted to be a dancer. I wanted to be in a Broadway show and perform but my mental and physical health were just not up to the demands of that career.

I don’t want that for you, I want you to set your sights on your goals and crush them 😊

So you can choose to be fearful and nervous…locked in inaction…

Or you can take the HOPE that is being offered you and give it a try.

As always it's up to you, but if there is one thing I have learned in life it's that even when I take the wrong action I still end up further ahead than taking no action at all.

People always ask me…

Research now shows that there is a strong connection between the mind and the gut, so effectively dealing with stress is a must in any gut health program.

This connection is called the Gut-Brain Axis but I always refer to it as the Mind-Gut Connection to remind myself that taking care of my body includes taking care of my mental wellbeing. In fact, I have dedicated a whole module to the “Mind-Gut Connection” in my new gut health program The Inside Out Microbiome Makeover™.

While there are many ways this communication happens, one of the main ways is via the Vagus nerve which extends from the base of the brain into the intestines. Because this communication is bidirectional, stimulating the Vagus nerve can also assist with gut function. And happily, deep rhythmic breathing from the diaphragm stimulates it!

So, people always ask me “What is the best form of meditation to do?”

Here is the answer…

The one you can commit to, do regularly and enjoy!

For me it is 20 minutes of Box Breathing at night before bed because I get the benefit of deep breathing as well as mediation all in one. I learned about Box Breathing from reading Unbeatable Mind by Mark Divine. You do it like this: breathe in for a count of 5, hold for a count of 5, breathe out for a count of 5 and hold for a count of 5. Simple but powerful.

Dysbiosis – The Missing Piece

I speak to a lot of people about their gut health issue and one of the biggest common denominators I see in the people who stay stuck in their chronic constipation (no pun intended) or debilitating diarrhea is that they are not taught about dysbiosis and how it can lead to those two issues.

They may seem like completely opposite problems but in fact they are the two sides of the same coin – dysbiosis. Dysbiosis occurs when the balance of the bacteria in our gut (our microbiome) shifts from predominantly good bacteria to bad bacteria.

The reason I know this missing piece called dysbiosis is connected to irregular bowel habits as well as other symptoms such as bloating and gas is that research tells us it is.

Here is how it works: the “bad” bacteria in our gut produces lot of gas and that gas often causes bloating and discomfort. Depending on what type of gas is produced determines if it results in diarrhea or constipation. A 2010 study looking at predictors in IBS and SIBO showed that hydrogen gas was the predominant gas detected in people with diarrhea-predominant IBS and methane was detected more frequently in people with constipation-predominant IBS.

Once we address the dysbiosis the other symptoms (gas, bloating, constipation and diarrhea) naturally begin to resolve; which means no more stretchy pants, scoping out all the bathrooms in any given location or endlessly waiting on the toilet hoping for something to happen.

These Health Issues Are Not Random…

This list of conditions probably looks random, but in fact they’re all connected and all point to the same root driver – dysbiosis. And dysbiosis is a big factor when it comes to the development of IBS.

If you haven’t already, you will hear me talk a lot of about dysbiosis. It’s a condition that occurs when the balance of good bacteria to bad bacteria in the gut gets altered. It’s a key factor in the mechanisms that lead to IBS. And it is one of my Big 5 issues that has to be addressed when dealing with IBS.

When you are dealing with IBS, you can often end up with different health issues where seemingly unrelated symptoms present themselves, leading to confusion as you or your doctor start trying to “patch” up all these different symptoms.

The problem is, unless you are addressing the root cause of all these different symptoms, you will spend your whole life “patching” different and new symptoms that will continue to crop up.

If you have these (and other) symptoms and feel like you are just running from one solution to another you need to stop the patching and start reversing the main issue which is dysbiosis.

The Hardest Part About Gut Issues like IBS

Here’s the Honest Truth…

When you are dealing with IBS and other gut health issues, it can end up affecting your self-confidence, your ability to trust that you will ever be “normal” again and that your life won’t always evolve around your gut symptoms.

The way IBS plays with your mind, how you see yourself and the world is often the hardest part to overcome. This is especially true for gut health issues because we know that the mind and gut are connected via the Gut Brain Axis.

It becomes a vicious cycle: poor gut health can lead to greater anxiety and anxiety (stress) can have adverse effects on the microbiome.

So we have to be mindful because this inner dialogue and the stories you tell yourself about your IBS can end up exacerbating the actual problem.

This is why it is so important to surround yourself with a community of people who are going through the same struggles…

NOT so that you can all get together and talk about how bad it is…but so that you can give each other support and have a beacon for what is actually true when your inner dialogue starts to take you in the wrong direction.

So…if you are struggling with anxiety this week here is an affirmation I would like you to try repeating throughout the day to help reset your mind.

It’s a reminder that investing in your self-care, releasing the mistakes of the past and staying hopeful for a healthy future are going to go a long way to create the mindset for you to see the path to your healing.

Your Expectations Vs. Your Reality

And one of the first things we need to address are the EXPECTATIONS you had for your health and lifestyle vs. your REALITY.

Your expectation was good health should just occur without working on it and investing in it, but your reality is gut health issues and IBS need effort and attention to overcome.

First, I want to affirm that every single feeling you have about your current situation is valid and important.

Second, I want to know that this is a safe space to express anything you want to about the frustrations of having IBS.

Third, any thought you have that “others have it worse”, or “I shouldn’t feel this way”, or “I should just be able to deal with this” need to be gently put to the side as we work together to get you from feeling overwhelmed and out of control to feeling healthy, confident in your ability to manage your condition and able to enjoy life.

Fourth, did you know your experience can also help someone else so the more you are able to be open and real in this group the more everybody moves forward together.
