"Stable funding for people with disabilities will help curb the food bank usage which is at an all time high … so many people have to choose between paying for rent and food."

No one deserves to live in poverty. The Canada Disability Benefit can lift people with disabilities out of poverty.

Insights from the UK are applicable here in Canada too. People with disabilities are disproportionately affected by homelessness. For example, "For [people with disabilities], homelessness can lead to deterioration of existing conditions or onset of new ones." Difficulty accessing support forces people with disabilities deeper into poverty and homelessness.

Much the same here. Let's end disability poverty in Canada.

Words matter. The language that we use to refer to persons with disabilities has an impact, as it shapes our perception of the world and shows how we value them as equal members of society. These UN Disability Inclusive Language Guidelines are a great place to start to learn and also remind us how to communicate with or talk about people with disabilities.

We believe that all people have inherent value and worth. The worth is not tied to dis/ability, nor to a person's perceived ability to contribute to society. We recognize disability as a natural form of human diversity.

Amidst an already difficult housing crisis, families in BC with children with disabilities find it even harder to find a home, much less one that is inclusive, accessible, affordable, and otherwise suitable for them. Landlords are discriminating against families with children. Remember, housing is a basic human right.

The potential of provincial and territorial governments clawing back a new CDB is a real concern. This article spells out our concerns. The CDB is meant to be a supplement, not a subtraction. Governments must work to agree on no clawbacks. The CDB must do what it is designed to do - bring people with disabilities out of poverty.

Accessibility - whether of emergency response efforts, ATMs, self-checkout machines, financial support applications, or anything else - needs to be prioritized. Too often, people with disabilities are excluded from full inclusion in society because of barriers that others do not have to face. Barriers that can be removed.

Ministers from AB, SK, ON, NB, BC, NS, and PEI have all asked their federal counterpart to pause the expansion of MAiD for mental illness.

We call on the government to not stop at a pause or another delay. The responsible thing to do is to repeal the sunset clause and stop the expansion once and for all.

People need supports to live not death.

February is Inclusive Education Month.

Let us remember that all students have the right to be in an inclusive classroom not segregated from everyone else. Learning with and alongside their peers in their local community school.

This includes at the early learning stage, primary and high school level, and in post-secondary education. For inclusive education to work as intended, there needs to be the necessary resources and support to enable all learners to learn and be included.

February marks National Inclusive Education Month! Did you catch the memo? In Canada, inclusive education is not just a practice; it’s a human right, enshrined in Article 24 of the UNCRPD. Read it here: https://bit.ly/3Sp17cK

Throughout February, we will be promoting and celebrating inclusive education for people with intellectual disabilities. Read more about the right to inclusive education here: https://inclusiveeducation.ca/learn/right-to-education/
