During my struggle with acne, the one thing I wanted most of all was a baby. Already in my mid-30s and fresh out of medical school, I was ready to become a mom. πŸ˜”

πŸ‘‰ But because my hormones were so out of balance (and this imbalance was showing on my skin) I couldn’t carry a pregnancy.

πŸ“Œ In fact, I had 3 heart-breaking second-trimester miscarriages. I have never cried so much in my life or wanted something so badly. πŸ˜”

πŸ‘‰ Tim and I finally decided that it was time to explore fertility options - and we were scheduled for our first assisted cycle in September 2008. But deep down inside, I knew that I could conceive and carry the baby on my own.

πŸ“Œ I needed to heal my body and balance my hormones first - and I took some major steps the summer before our appointment.

πŸ‘‰ I completely quit sugar. Not even a speck. It was dramatic and difficult, but I kept it savoury. This is the biggest factor in balancing insulin levels, which can lead to high androgens.

πŸ‘‰ One of my worst habits was skipping meals. I was always too busy and excited to eat - so I would usually grab a quick breakfast and then go all day until having a balanced dinner. I thought I was being healthy, but I decided that I was going to have 3 solid meals each and every day.

πŸ‘‰ I swapped my gluten-free muffin and freshly pressed fruit juice breakfast (yup, I thought that was healthy at the time) for a protein shake with blueberries, vegan protein, and avocado. This helped to balance my insulin and androgen levels.

πŸ‘‰ I followed this plan quite strictly for 3 months - and not only did my skin start to clear dramatically (more than ever before), but I also ended up falling pregnant a few weeks before my appointment with the fertility specialist. And 9 months later, I had my beautiful Kai.

When | was in Naturopathic College the one skin lesson that was repeated over and over again was this:""Inflammation in the gut = inflammation in the skin 🧐

πŸ“Œ What are some signs that your acne is related to your
digestion?

πŸ‘‰ 1. You experience poor digestion, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, excess gas, and stomach pains.
πŸ‘‰ 2. Your acne tends to be located on your cheeks.
πŸ‘‰ 3. Your acne is present all month long and does not fluctuate with your period.
πŸ‘‰ 4. Your acne visibly flares when you eat foods that do not agree with you.

πŸ“Œ Healing the gut is a huge part of reducing inflammation in the body - specifically balancing the microbiome and healing the gut lining.

πŸ‘‰ A dysregulated microbiome and a leaky gut often go hand in hand. A leaky gut is when the gut lining has been damaged, and particles such as toxins, microbes, and other foreign molecules enter the bloodstream and create inflammation.

πŸ‘‰ Healing the gut is a multi-step process: food sensitivities must be addressed, pathogenic microbes must be reduced and beneficial microbes must be introduced. The gut lining needs to be healed. Constipation needs to be resolved. This must all be done to clear your acne and achieve optimal health.

πŸ‘‰ But the really good news is that your gut wants to be healed - we just have to give it the things it wants and take away the things that are aggravating it ❀

For the past 18 years, I've been helping thousands of women clear their skin by balancing their bodies from the inside out. I've been there. Not only have I suffered from really awful acne myself, but I became a naturopathic doctor so I could learn to heal my own skin and help other women learn how to heal their own acne. πŸ˜‰

One of the most important things that I've learned is the root causes of acne, and what we need to balance to get clear skin for good. 🧐

πŸ‘‰ The first root cause of acne is dysregulated stress and cortisol. I've done a lot of testing with all my acne patients and one of the biggest trends that I see is dysregulated cortisol.

πŸ‘‰ Most acne patients are stuck in their fight-or-flight nervous system. What we need to do is to allow the body to feel that it's safe so we can start to transition out of the sympathetic nervous system into the parasympathetic nervous system where the body can actually heal. When you're in a state of stress, you're just NOT able to heal.

πŸ‘‰ Number two is insulin levels. Insulin is a hormone that attaches to a receptor on the cell wall. When we have high insulin, this leads to high androgens. Androgens are the hormones that lead to increased oil production in our skin. So when our insulin levels are dysregulated, it's like a perfect storm that can lead to acne.

πŸ‘‰ Third, when constipation is being experienced, it is going to back up, the entire system is going to inhibit proper drainage, and if detoxification is NOT working properly, it's just going to create a storm that can absolutely worsen acne.

πŸ‘‰ Lastly, if you have really resistant, chronic acne, you need to get a test done so you can identify how to heal your gut.

πŸ“Œ If you want to learn more about the root cause of your acne, comment "HEAL" to get my acne quiz link.

Skin that is prone to acne is sensitive. πŸ˜”

πŸ“Œ It can be oily, congested, inflamed, and blemished - but more than anything it is sensitive.

πŸ‘‰ So many skincare products that are designed for β€˜oily skin' and β€˜acne-prone skin' focus on drying out oil production, killing bacteria, and exfoliating the skin.

πŸ‘‰ Too many of these actions, especially all at once, will make the skin way more sensitive and vulnerable to breakouts.

πŸ‘‰ Think of what happens to your skin if you fall off your bike - it is bruised, inflamed, and scraped.

πŸ‘‰ Would you aggressively apply ingredients designed to dry it out and damage the skin's barrier? No - you would cleanse the area gently, apply a healing balm, and let your body take it from there.

πŸ“Œ Same with acne-prone skin. Your daily skincare routine should focus on healing the skin - reducing inflammation, healing the moisture barrier, and balancing the skin's pH and microbiome. This is how sensitive skin is made more resilient.

πŸ‘‰ And then (only then) should you carefully add in some gentle acne treatments.

πŸ“Œ Bottom line: instead of selecting skincare that is designed for oily and acne-prone skin, select skincare that is designed for sensitive skin. Think of healing and nourishing your skin instead of battling acne.

Clearing hormonal acne isn't about the hormones at all - instead, it is all about addressing the UNDERLYING causes of hormonal imbalance. 🧐

We need to go deeper than the hormonal level to really solve hormonal imbalances. So what actually causes hormonal imbalances? This is it. πŸ˜”

πŸ“Œ Healing the body, especially chronic acne, is about achieving a fine balance. The truth is that you need to understand WHY your hormones are imbalanced so that you can address your hormonal imbalance from that place.

πŸ‘‰ And then hormones balance themselves.

Over the past few years, there have been several amazing studies that have shown the benefits of intermittent fasting. 🧐

πŸ“Œ Intermittent fasting, which is eating only during a certain time window each day (usually 8 hours), has been shown to regulate insulin levels, increase cellular repair, reduce cancer, facilitate weight loss, and more.

πŸ“Œ The thing is, most of the research has been done on men. πŸ˜”

πŸ‘‰ Women don't respond to fasting in the same way as men.

πŸ“Œ Subsequent research on women has shown that intermittent fasting can actually inhibit ovulation in women over time, as our body responds to hunger signals hormonally.

πŸ“Œ This means that intermittent fasting can actually make acne worse. πŸ˜”

πŸ“Œ In fact, a study done a few years ago found that women with high androgens who ate breakfast were able to lower their androgens more than those who did not eat breakfast.

πŸ‘‰ What if you are not hungry in the morning?

πŸ“Œ A lack of hunger in the morning can actually be a side effect of cortisol dysregulation.

πŸ“Œ When you wake, your cortisol awakening response, which is a spike in cortisol levels, is responsible for stimulating your appetite. If you do not feel hungry in the morning, there is a good chance that your cortisol awakening response is NOT working optimally - a sure sign of cortisol dysregulation.

πŸ‘‰ Even if you are not hungry in the morning, start eating a breakfast high in protein.

Over the past few weeks, I have been reflecting on how much my approach to acne has shifted over the years. 🧐

When I first started treating acne, I mostly focused on diet, blood sugar, and detox support. πŸ˜‰

πŸ‘‰ But over the years, especially as my patient cases have become more complicated, I find myself doing functional medicine testing and fine-tuning specific pathways in the body while supporting overall emotional and mental well-being.

πŸ“Œ Healing the body, especially chronic acne is all about achieving a fine balance, and I love this work so much.

πŸ‘‰ But there are a few things that have not changed in my acne protocol. Probably the most important one is my focus on supporting lymphatic drainage.

πŸ“Œ Drainage is all about moving toxins away from the cells and out of the body, and the main organ system that performs this action is the lymphatic system.

πŸ‘‰ Many of the lymph nodes (which are like the hubs of the lymphatic system) are in the neck, and when lymphatic congestion happens, toxins remain in the head, neck, and face area. Often, this can result in acne.

πŸ“Œ Reducing lymphatic stagnation is critical to reducing acne. Even though it may not solve it completely, it is difficult to heal acne without addressing the lymph.

πŸ‘‰ That is why my #1 acne prescription is a formula that supports lymphatic drainage.

πŸ‘‰ There are several formulas that I love, and you can visit my Fullscript account page here to see which ones I use the most.

πŸ‘‰ The other formulas I really like for lymphatic drainage are Drainage Activator and Lymphactiv from Cellcore.

Constipation is a big deal. Yet we never talk about it. 🧐

πŸ“Œ Here's a few things you need to know:

πŸ‘‰ If you have a complete bowel movement less than once per day you are constipated

πŸ‘‰ If you are constipated, toxins are sticking around in your body longer than they should

πŸ‘‰ Elevated toxins in the body can lead to hormonal imbalances and worsening acne

I am going to share why most acne patients are constipated, and what needs to be done to get things moving every single day. 🧐

Our bowel habits can give us major insight into what is going on in our gut, and if you have acne, this is information you need to know! πŸ˜‰

πŸ‘‰ Often constipation is NOT fully resolved on its own until we go in and do that really deep gut work. And often testing is required when we need to go in and do that gut work because we need to understand what's going on.

πŸ‘‰ Is there a yeast? Is there candida that's present, maybe there are parasites, maybe there's a different bacterial overgrowth, maybe there's low bile acids? So we have to figure it out so that we can balance and heal properly. ❀

At this point, we know beyond a doubt that diet and exercise are critical for optimal health and to manage inflammation in our body. 🧐

But there is one other critical health factor that is sometimes overlooked - yet just as important. πŸ˜”

πŸ‘‰ Regulating our circadian rhythm, which is our sleep/wake cycle can be the most natural thing in the world for some people, and extremely challenging for others.

πŸ“Œ I fall into the latter category - since my late 20s, I have struggled with sleep. Adrenal fatigue, anxiety, and an incredibly sensitive nervous system all play a role - and because acne patients are especially sensitive I see this pattern often in my patients.

πŸ‘‰ Circadian Rhythm Regulation is absolutely necessary for reducing inflammation, and repairing and keeping the body healthy.

Are you dehydrated? 🧐

Because your body is 78% water, this happens commonly. 😫

πŸ‘‰ Usually, when people experience dry and dehydrated skin, the first thing they usually do is reach for a good moisturizer.

πŸ‘‰ Sometimes, they even start to drink more water.

πŸ“Œ But rarely do they balance their mineral levels, which is the ultimate solution to dry and dehydrated skin.

πŸ‘‰ When minerals are imbalanced in our bodies, even drinking enough water each day can leave us dehydrated.

πŸ‘‰ To fully absorb water into ourselves, we must have adequate minerals to facilitate proper absorption. If you don't have enough minerals, water is going to pass right through your body without absorption.

πŸ‘‰ As I said, for those of us who are diligently drinking our two liters of water but yet we're mineral deficient, we're going to remain dehydrated.

πŸ‘‰ The health of the gut is reflected in the health of the skin - so acne can be a sign that your digestion is not running as smoothly as possible.

πŸ‘‰ An inflamed gut will allow foreign molecules to enter the bloodstream and an imbalanced microbiome will trigger inflammatory cytokines to produce inflammation in the body, both of which manifest as blemishes in acne-prone individuals.

πŸ“Œ The solution? We need to heal the gut and balance the microbiome so that the gut can heal and digest foods easily and without discomfort.

πŸ‘‰ 1. Acne is a skin problem

πŸ“Œ Acne is actually a complex medical condition that involves many different organ systems and hormones. To heal acne for good, you have to heal your body from the inside out. Working at the level of the skin is not enough, you need to look at the body holistically and figure out what is really imbalanced.

πŸ“Œ Skincare will never address the root causes of acne, which means you cannot heal acne with skincare alone.

πŸ‘‰ 2. Acne will go away on its own if you leave it alone.

πŸ“Œ Acne is not a condition that you should ignore. It can signal imbalances in insulin regulation, microbiome balance, stress management, and the body’s ability to detoxify.

πŸ“Œ Simply ignoring acne can often make these imbalances worse, which can lead to more acne, scarring, and hyperpigmentation. Always deal with acne as soon as possible to avoid permanent marks.

πŸ‘‰ 3. Medications can heal acne.

πŸ“Œ Medications never, ever address the root cause. Instead, they address the symptoms of acne only. This means that when you come off of the medication, including Accutane, acne can come back even worse.

The only way to permanently solve acne is to address the root cause naturally.

I have been helping women heal acne for over 18 years as a Naturopathic Doctor. 😊

Over the years, I have definitely seen some connections between where acne manifests on the face and what it means:

πŸ‘‰ Forehead: poor detoxification, food intolerances, stress
πŸ‘‰ Between the Eyebrows: stress, food intolerances
πŸ‘‰ Ears: lymphatic stagnation
πŸ‘‰ Cheeks: poor detoxification, poor digestion, and dysbiosis, dirty cellphones
πŸ‘‰ Jawline: hormonal imbalance
πŸ‘‰ Chin: hormonal imbalance, food intolerances, stress, constipation
πŸ‘‰ Neck: hormonal imbalance, lymphatic stagnation

Each person is a bit different and this diagram does not apply to everyone, but it does reflect the general patterns that I have seen over the years treating thousands of patients. It also corresponds pretty well to Chinese Face Mapping. πŸ€“

07/01/2024

This might surprise you, but I don't prescribe fish oils, vitamin A, or zinc for acne. And I learned this the hard way. 🧐

πŸ‘‰ 1. Most of the acne research done with these supplements was done on males, not females. As women, our physiology is different, our hormones are different, and our treatment has to be different.

πŸ‘‰ 2. Nutrient deficiency is usually caused by either a poor diet or poor absorption/ assimilation of nutrients. Supplementation does not solve either of these issues.

πŸ‘‰ 3. Synthetic vitamin A can be dangerous. Mother Nature serves us our vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene, which is a precursor to vitamin A. This allows our body to convert only as much beta-carotene to Vitamin A as is needed.

This is because excessive Vitamin A is NOT healthy, it can easily build up in our body and become toxic (think of all the side effects of Accutane, a form of vitamin A).

πŸ‘‰ 4. Trace minerals, including zinc, are incredibly important for the skin, but taking too much zinc for too long can lead to a copper deficiency. In addition, zinc can also increase the activity of the aromatase enzyme, which can increase testosterone in the body.

I only prescribe zinc if testing reveals a deficiency and I can monitor the patient. If not, trace minerals are a great way to ensure mineral balance.

πŸ“Œ Now, as always, everyone is different, but I have found far better solutions for acne than these 3 common supplements. 😊

Healing the gut requires a step-by-step strategy, but there are a few foods that contain gut-healing superpowers. Eating these foods regularly can keep bacterial overgrowth at bay and promote healthy, easy digestion and crystal-clear skin. πŸ˜‰

πŸ‘‰ 1. Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, and coconut yogurt can bolster the gut microbiome, creating a healthier mix of microbes and strengthening the walls of the intestines to keep them from leaking.

πŸ‘‰ 2. High-fiber foods such as avocado, raspberries, lentils, almonds, chia seeds, and black beans. Not only does fiber help regulate insulin levels and prevent constipation, which is common in acne, but fiber feeds the beneficial bacteria in the gut, keeping your gut healthy and absorption of nutrients optimal.

If eating fiber causes gas and bloating, try increasing your water consumption or investigate bacterial overgrowth.

πŸ‘‰ 3. Polyphenols such as berries, herbs, spices, olives, and nuts feed specific bacterial strains in the gut, such as akkermansia, which is responsible for ensuring the health of the gut lining, optimal absorption of nutrients, and clear skin.

πŸ‘‰ If you have difficulty digesting any of these foods, it might be time to assess your gut health to determine if you have any imbalances or overgrowth happening.

Instead, I lived in a state of anxiety, panic, and codependence - thinking that it was normal. I had no idea how to relax, and I only felt comfortable if I was overwhelmed with work or out having a few drinks.😫

I had no idea how to sit and watch a sunset, or close my eyes and feel music move within my body. I couldn’t sit still - because I didn’t want to feel. I was trapped in my sympathetic nervous system, in a state of complete survival. πŸ˜₯

πŸ‘‰ The sad culmination of my nervous system dysregulation was 3 massive stress-induced heart attacks, which landed me in the hospital for weeks.
