There are many things that can be done to address mild to moderate acne that are not difficult, and do not require testing or private coaching.
How do you know if you can heal your acne without testing and coaching? What are the best steps that you can take to figure out your clear skin strategy?

Enough of the hype, the βinstantβ fixes that are going to drive you crazy. After healing acne as a Naturopathic Doctor for 18 years, I know there are no magic fixes.
Hereβs the truth. There is not βoneβ thing that is going to solve your chronic acne.
Chronic acne is a complex medical condition, and in order to solve it once and for all, we need to take a deep dive into your health and discover any imbalances that are contributing to your acne.
These imbalances usually look like insulin dysregulation, poor drainage and detox, unmanaged stress and gut infections. And, there is not one magic solution that is going to clear your acne for good.
Healing the body doesnβt happen overnight. It can take a couple months of reducing inflammation, healing the gut lining, slowly detoxing the body, and teaching the brain to re-wire some of its pathways to help your skin fully recover.
If you are up for this journey, I am ready to be your guide.

Hi Friends.
Itβs September and itβs time to take care of business. If you are a woman with chronic acne, you need to be a part of my community.
I know how debilitating acne can be β I spent 5 years avoiding the world because I was too embarrassed to be seen with my acne. It held me back in a big way.
But hereβs the good news β acne is a sign that there is an imbalance in the body and when we heal the body from within, your chronic acne will resolve.
As a Naturopathic Doctor, I have been helping women solve their chronic acne for 18 years, and I spend my days treating the most complicated acne cases out there. Seriously, most of my patients have tried everything to heal their acne (including other naturopathic doctors and nutritionists) when they finally find me. I deeply understand how to heal acne, and this fall I am putting together a program that will help you heal your acne β even on a budget.
My Clear Skin Group Program is going to take you on a journey to heal your acne without doing any lab testing β and I can do this because I have read thousands of lab tests and I understand the most common patterns seen in acne patients.
And, if you decide to do lab testing, I have included a lab testing guide to help you and your healthcare practitioner do a deeper dive into the root causes of your acne. Or you can upgrade to my 1:1 program!

The biggest myth about hormonal acne is that you have to balance your hormones directly. π§
π The truth is that you need to understand WHY your hormones are imbalanced so that you can address your hormonal imbalance from that place. And then hormones balance themselves.
π Years ago, I used to run DUTCH hormone tests on all my patients.
π It would usually show estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone imbalances. And based on that information I would put together a protocol that wasnβt amazing. It was all about blocking androgens, reducing the activity of 5-alpha reductase, increasing progesterone levels, and reducing (or increasing) estrogen levels. (This is all important information to have, but it is incomplete.)
π My success rate was mediocre.
π Until I started running MORE tests. GI-Mapping Tests, OAT tests, HTMA tests β and then I was able to clearly see WHY the hormones were imbalanced and create protocols that deeply addressed the root cause of hormonal imbalances.
π Some of the things I saw? Chronic gut infections, parasites, mineral and nutrient imbalances, insulin dysregulation, mold, candida, deficiency dysbiosis, h pylori, leaky gut, poor detoxification, lymphatic stagnation, SIBO β and the list goes on.
π And when I am treating the body THAT deeply, the hormones balance themselves. β€

The main reason why women fail to clear their chronic acne?
Not addressing the root cause of acne β usually dysregulated cortisol levels, insulin levels, poor detox and gut health.
Medications and skincare do not address the real reason that acne is happening in the first place, which means that acne will never be fully resolved. Even if symptoms are being managed temporarily β it will always come back.
The real solution is to understand WHY you have chronic acne, which often includes some smart functional medicine testing β or working with a practitioner that has a ton of experience healing acne.
I have personally experienced the trauma of acne and I get it. In fact, I spent 5 years of my life hiding from the world, refusing to even have my picture taken.
The good news is that I have the answers that you are looking for β and I share them in my FREE Clear Skin Masterclass.

HERE THEY ARE β¬οΈ
π Remember to save this post so you can come back to these!
Protein and fat is critical for cortisol and insulin balance, and keeping skin clear.
My goal is 1g of protein for per kg of body weight throughout the day, but I also love to eat foods that I love, such as guacamole and old goat cheddar. Remember that deriving pleasure from your food is important too!
Truth: I really try not to snack, but when I do, here are the 5 snacks I eat on repeat:
1οΈβ£ Protein shake: berries + coconut milk + cinnamon + protein powder
2οΈβ£ Hard boiled eggs with Maryβs crackers
3οΈβ£ Tuna salad (celery, red onion, mustard, olive oil) on greens
4οΈβ£ Olives with goat cheddar and Maryβs crackers (so delicious)
5οΈβ£ Guacamole with Maryβs crackers (not super high in protein, but lots of healthy fat and fiber)

Three Things to Avoid if you have acne:
1. Inflammatory foods, such as gluten, dairy and sugar. Until your gut has been healed, inflammatory foods will trigger inflammation β and acne is inflammation.
2. Freaking out. Cortisol dysregulation is one of the biggest acne triggers. Cortisol will dysregulate estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone β all of which can contribute to acne when imbalanced.
3. Over-using skincare. When you damage your skinβs moisture barrier, your skin becomes far more vulnerable to irritation, redness, stinging, scarring, pigmentation, and acne. Avoid over-cleansing and over-exfoliating your skin.
Healing chronic acne is a journey in balancing the body and reclaiming your health and well-being. Avoiding these three triggers are important to initially get acne under control, but to solve acne for good, we need to do a deep dive and understand the imbalances that are creating the inflammation in the first place.
Addressing drainage, detox, gut health, the limbic system, nutrition and more is critical to getting to the root cause of your acne and solving it for good.

If you have acne, coffee may not be the best morning drink for you:
1. Coffee on an empty stomach in the morning can seriously aggravate blood sugar and insulin issues
2. Many acne patients have a genetic SNP (CYP-1A2) that can alter the bodyβs ability to metabolize caffeine, which can predispose them to heightened anxiety, insomnia, and indirectly, more acne.
Over the last 20 years helping women heal their acne, I have seen many women absolutely physically relieved when they no longer consume their morning coffee. Less anxiety, better sleep, less stomach issues, and better skin.
And, of course, I have my own clear skin version of morning coffee, which tastes amazing and will actually help the body detoxify (instead of impairing its detox abilities, like coffee can in some).
The star of the show is roasted dandelion root, which has a taste similar to coffee (and to all the coffee connoisseurs out there, I know you will vehemently disagree, and I understand). Roasted dandelion root is famous for its ability to help drain and support the liver.
Many acne patients are not great detoxifiers, so waking up to some dandelion tea in the morning can be so helpful for overall energy and helping to clear your skin.
What makes my morning cup of roasted dandelion tea absolutely delicious is the addition of coconut cream. I am addicted. If you like you can add a drop or two of stevia or monkfruit β but I love it unsweetened.
I hope you love this morning drink as much as I do β ENJOY!

Other things to consider if you have back acne:
1. Do you have blood sugar and insulin spikes?
2. Do you have nutrient deficiencies?
3. Are you using pore-clogging products?
Steps to take:
1. Testing to see if chronic infections or metabolic dysregulation is an issue for you (be sure to run the correct tests and have a professional well versed in acne interpret the results).
2. Be sure you are eating a whole food diet AND that your nutrients are being absorbed properly (this might require some testing too).
3. Use acne-safe products on your back to prevent break-outs. Check out my online store for product recommendations (link in my bio)

I wish people knew that inflammation is why so many people have acne and other skin problems.
I wish they knew that gut microbiome imbalances, environmental toxins, chronic stress and unresolved trauma drive the inflammation.
But most of all, I wish they knew that they arenβt broken and that healing their skin is profoundly possible.

I run a full bloodwork panel on each and every one of my patients. Because I interpret bloodwork using a narrow functional medicine reference range, I can usually get a vague picture of what is going on with my patients. It gives me valuable information on iron status, thyroid function, basic liver function, immune function, and basic hormone levels.
But if I depended on bloodwork to guide my patientβs treatment, I would get nowhere.
First, bloodwork is meant to diagnose conditions, not to identify root cause imbalances that precede frank disease.
Secondly, bloodwork doesnβt give us actionable information when it comes to treating the root cause of imbalances such as acne.
The testing that helps my patients the most are the tests that detect root cause imbalances and tell me exactly how to help a patient to heal their gut, support detoxification, and heal their nervous system. Bloodwork is not going to tell me that, ever.
So if your bloodwork is normal, two things:
1. Have it analysed using functional medicine reference ranges
2. Do functional medicine testing
3. Work with a practitioner that is experienced in treating acne

I remember when acne ruled my life.
Acne was constantly on my mind, and it determined so much of who I saw, when I went out, how I spent my time, energy and money.
And, most importantly, acne determined how I felt about myself.
Fast forward to 18 years later. Now, my skin has nothing to do with how I feel about myself.
Instead, I get my energy and satisfaction from helping other women achieve the same liberation from acne that I experienced.

Heal the brain to heal acne
Chronic acne can often be attributed to the effects of stress. Chronic stress can create changes in the limbic system in the brain, which can cause the nervous system to be on high alert. The HPA produces a dysregulated amount of cortisol and adrenaline, the autonomic nervous system is trapped in its sympathetic state, and the vagus nerve communicates to the body that it is under threat. In this state chronic acne cannot be healed.
The first thing that we need to do is heal the limbic system in the brain. Before we do anything else.

Hereβs the thing. If you have chronic cystic acne as a woman, itβs not going to magically disappear.
Cystic acne is a symptom that there is a deeper imbalance going on in your body, and skincare products, treatments and medications are not going to solve the root imbalance that is causing the cystic acne.
The only way to solve chronic cystic acne is to understand the root cause and then balance your body, one step at a time.
If you want the blueprint to conquering chronic acne, you MUST watch my FREE Clear Skin Masterclass. I am sharing tips and tricks that have already changed the lives of thousands of women.

There are so many moving parts to consider when it comes to healing acne.
One thing that often aggravates acne is gluten, which is found in barley, rye, oats (in processing), wheat and spelt. Gluten can damage the gut lining and create inflammation in the body. Many gluten-containing grains, especially wheat, are sprayed with chemicals such as glycosphate, which can even disrupt the way that our cells function.
There are two ways to discover whether or not gluten is aggravating your acne:
1. Remove gluten from your diet and see if there is a reduction in inflammation, an improvement in digestion, and decreased acne in a few weeks.
2. Do testing. I always test for gluten sensitivity, and I find that it is present in at least 60-70% of my patients. I do a GI-Mapping test with every patient.

Letβs be totally honest. Not everyone can afford $2500 to work with me and my team personally and get all the functional lab testing done. I get it.
So there has to be another option.
Over the past 6 years I have been running a successful online group acne program. And truth be told, it works. Hereβs why:
π My best-selling clear skin strategy is based on what I typically see in the labs of acne patients β and I have seen hundreds (maybe even thousands) of GI-Mapping Tests, Organic Acid Tests, bloodwork, and DUTCH tests in my 18 years of practice.
π₯ This means that my program is going to address the root cause of acne in most people.
πΈ My group program includes 4 months of support in my private Facebook Group, which includes answering your questions daily and over 4 years of Q&As to review.
πΌπΌπΌ My group program also includes 4 months of weekly LIVE group coaching calls with me, Dr. Stacey Shillington ND. This is an incredible value, as you get the support you need from one of the most experienced acne doctors out there. Period. πΌπΌπΌ
πΊ And if you do want to do some lab work to help you understand the root cause of your acne better, I have included a guide to help you and your doctor run all my favorite functional labs and bloodwork to investigate acne.
The success rate of my group acne program? Itβs 90%.
And the cost? Itβs super-affordable β probably less than a laser treatment and some skincare!
So please donβt feel frustrated if you cannot afford 1:1 Acne Coaching. There is a solution out there.
