What actually works for scars after surgery?
One of the best-supported treatments is also one of the simplest: silicone.
Once the incision is fully healed, silicone gel or silicone sheets can help scars mature flatter, softer and less red over time.
Other things matter too — protecting the scar from the sun, minimizing tension on the incision, and simply giving it time. For scars that become thick, raised or persistently red, treatments such as steroid injections or laser may also have a role.
There’s no way to make a scar disappear completely, but good scar care can make a meaningful difference.
Always follow your surgeon’s instructions about when to start scar treatment.
