MOMENTS OF MEDITATION
Moments exist when music, nature and spirit align to offer solace.
This is one.
If you are able, give the miraculous ocean all your doubts, worries, fears and shames. They will cling to you as if they are dying. They will cling to you because they made you think that is you. They will suck you dry.
Pursue this path: self knowledge-to know what it means to be fully human. You will learn they are a terrible case of mistaken identity.
But I am a slow learner: I am still embodying this knowledge, even though I know the reality. So be patient, tenacious, persistent.
As if your life spends on it. Because likely it does. At least the want you want versus the one you now have.

Learn to navigate content-what’s in front of us-and context-what else is available outside of our gaze (haze?)-because opportunity is there.
For example, you may have a good idea about who you are. But I bet you that if you inquire, using a proven source of knowledge, you’ll discover far more exists.

Living in the body/mind industrial complex requires study and practice.
It is not an easy gig. Both come with baggage. Sometimes that baggage is very heavy. Often too heavy. Even crippling.
So consider this: maybe the purpose of life is studying and practicing what makes us human on physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual levels.
Then from that sound foundation, see where that takes you in life. Because you will likely have a different set of metrics from which to guide purpose, meaning, fulfillment and action.
If you are already launched in a career, initiate a parallel path to look within and know yourself; specifically, know what it means to be fully human.
These two paths are complementary, as the more you know about yourself, the more you will consciously, constructively contribute to all.

ON FROZEN POND
The pond was barely frozen but just enough to skate to create memories worthy of the coveted Stanley Cup, hockey’s symbol of supremacy.
Skates, stick and puck are given to each Canadian child at birth.
Babies are lulled to sleep to the famous melody (in Canada, at least) “Breakaway” also known as “She shoots, she scores.”
All Canadian babies start skating within six months. In their first year they’re enrolled in hockey camp.
This group of overachievers played this afternoon on a vast lake, part of which was still liquid. Such commitment and courage.
It was unclear who was playing whom, but things got much clearer when an MVP stick-handled a case of Budweiser to the makeshift centre.
The ancient ritual of quaffing ale during shiny was set.
No score was recorded, but memories sure were as play in a sublime nature took all three stars.
It was the sort of scene ideal for Christmas cards in the future.

What if the snow flurries represent all those thoughts and feelings that incessantly scamper, causing stress?
But wait! What else is there aside from flurries? What looks at the flurries and all else?
Awareness sees all. Everything exists within awareness. One’s capacity to maintain awareness without fixing on the flurries is called the subtle intellect.
The mind’s flurries might be helpful in some instances but it is the intellect that lifts us all beyond the material, beyond inertia, and towards meaning, fulfillment, peace.
That’s success.
To develop the subtle intellect (which all posts are designed to offer) study from a proven source that’s helped many, submit to a qualified teacher.
Most importantly, do not give up.

This post offers a glimpse, hopefully a beautiful one, into a larger version of yourself.
It uses stunning nature as a backdrop to contemplate.
There are no should do’s and must do’s and gotta haves. A posture free post this is!
Just you bathing in nature, learning to disconnect from a rambunctious mind, and develop an intellect.
From terrestrial to extraterrestrial. Matter to spirit. Fixed to fluid.
EXERCISE
TaKe what seems to press on your body / mind complex while viewing this. Ask
- Where does this disturbance arise within me precisely?
- Why does it arise at all?
- What happened (in the past) such that I experience this now?
- What else do I choose to experience, live, know?
- How may I move towards that “preferred” place?
All answers valid, including no answers. The ego wants quick answers; however, reality demands more from us to enjoy it. Think of this as a small step forward, deeper.
Again, this process begins to improve observational skills, and intellectual ones too. You are gently challenging what may be deeply seated, unconscious patterns and making them less unconscious.
Kind readers may recall more instruction is required for students dedicated to know themselves.
Specifically, seekers of what it means to be fully human require three things:
1) a burning desire to know yourself
2) a source that dissolves the ignorance (unconscious conditioning) that obscures that reality
3) a qualified teacher who is also doing her or his own work in a similar way (there are precious few enlightened sages)
So now-enjoy learning about your nature.

GUIDELINES
Nothing to do. Sit, stand, kneel-whatever you wish. No beautification smiles, saffron robes or partridge poses required.
Next, imagine a chair beside you where you place your thoughts and feelings. Like a cherished friend.
Now, have what’s remaining of you give them a warm embrace, safe in the knowledge this is a glimpse into infinity- limitlessness- and you are greater than what’s seated next to you.
Just as waves crash, allow whatever arises to crash.
Funny thing: that part witnessing all that crashing is unchanged.
If you see this, then you are edging closer to a beautiful reality: who you really are. The waves are a much lesser version of who you think you are.
Good night from the east coast of Canada.

Welcome to 60 seconds to bathe in the beauty of nature to recover the beauty of your nature.
How?
First, we humans are both our own subjects and objects in life.
As a mind, body and intellect we see objects outside of us. For example, this vivid, natural, setting in the mountains.
As consciousness, we see all as objects, including the mind, body and intellect. We witness the material part of ourselves as well as this nature setting.
Moments of meditation is designed to help deepen our awareness of consciousness.
Everything arises within it.
Including your thoughts and feelings.
Fears and desires.
Nature helps disengage our auto pilot, or attachment to our bodies and minds. By turning awareness towards the water, its gentle sounds, the fallen trees, moss and surrounding forest we have a chance to host life from a different place.
One that is more observer than absorbed. Free rather than addicted.
Todays exercise: observe how your mind and body reacts to this scene. Is there impatience or calm? Restlessness or stillness? Struggle or surrender?
Analysis reveals most viewers discontinue viewing after about 20 seconds. The invitation is to observe this scene and all else (ie: you!) for the entire duration. Observe any disturbance past 20 seconds. This may alert you to places where feelings undermine intentions. Where goals succumb to fears and self doubt.
Because a stilled mind and body is a learned skill - takes years! - and imperative for those who wish to know what it means to be fully human. That is real success!
This is not a complete teaching to learn to still the mind; rather it offers a gentle calibration to give a sense of what limits you when limitlessness is your real nature.

MOMENTS OF MEDITATION
Enjoy 60 seconds of nature’s peace and beauty. Can you see yourself here?
And know this: you also are peaceful and beautiful. Worthy, not worthless. Always.
I understand this might read as yet another, peppy, trite post that offers easy answers to gnarly existential issues we all have.
But that is not the intention. Instead, we all are whole, limitless, complete, non dual, magnificent, sublime and ordinary. But stuff gets in the way that limits, obscures that reality.
That stuff? Unconsciousness arising from early childhood conditioning. Blind spots. The stuff you were told, or observed and experienced roughly between the ages 0-7.
That conditioning becomes a primitive, buggy software program buried miles deep. It is the operating system that keeps us on a rats’ wheel of incessant, feverish fears and desires, and performs without detection: until we find ourselves in some sort of crisis, or grow tired of living life unhappily, unfulfilled. Without purpose or meaning.
Or perhaps we realize all the stuff in the world cannot replace the chronic torment, emptiness and aches we feel.
A tough but proven remedy exists: know what it means to be fully human-self knowledge.
Know you (I promise, respectfully, there’s more than you know, far more).
For many that obliges a number of things, including psychological knowledge (bottom up) and ontological knowledge (top down).
This series is meant to cultivate peace-the starting point to delve deeply into self knowledge- and perhaps I’ve used too many words and realities.
See if you can be waterside throughout the 60 sec scene. You may observe that software program during that time. It will want to drive on with different thoughts or actions or judgments.
Perhaps that same pattern limits you elsewhere, professionally and personally. Stay by the shore....
Just know this: you are greater-far greater-than you know.

Spend the next 60 seconds in quiet using the beauty and sounds of nature to be with whatever thoughts, feelings and all other experiences you are presently happening.
Now, let’s pretend that all this beautiful nature is your actual self, and you are witnessing those thoughts, feelings and experiences just as you are looking at nature now. Understand?
Nature hosts your thoughts and feelings as you’re hosting nature now.
See if you can hang out in this new relationship for at least 30 seconds. If you can’t, that’s cool, it’s just a measure of the disturbance you are experiencing.
Two energies surge through us: one is action, the other inertia. Both have positive and not so positive characteristics.
A third energy-peace-may transcend those energies, stabilizing the instrument you roam earth in, and contributes from a stable, calm, inspired place. A place that has access to for more of our human capabilities.
Meditation is simply a starting point to peace. But for long term, life long access to it, one must study, embody and practice self knowledge: to know what it means to be fully human.
Here’s an unscientific measure. Most people will engage their senses to view the pictures, become bored and move on after about 20 seconds; around that time discomfort arises. Why?
The unregulated mind is a feverish rats’ wheel of fears and desires where movement or collapse are overused.
It’s good to know intimately your mind and body so you may be attuned to its ways. As important, though, one must learn to master another capacity all have, but little known, rarely used and powerful: the subtle intellect, which calls into question everything in service to discern reality, free of impairment, to make wise choices.
All this to explore in the next few seconds.
Enjoy hanging out with your nature, while thoughts and feelings frolic.

Use this brief moment to refresh. We all are so hard wired with unconscious urgings and the unholy trinity of fears, desires and inertias.
Here’s a practice: just as you observe the icy tree by a frozen lake, see if you can also witness yourself as another object within this sacred portrait.
Host, as best you can, all thoughts and feelings that arise. Imagine placing them outside yourself to observe them differently. Though this requires additional inquiry and study, they all are objects. They arise within consciousness.
We’re comprised of two aspects: matter and consciousness. The former is limited; the latter, limitless.
Know both to flourish.
Now, for the next minute, bathe in the light of this sacred setting. Rest assured you are more than a scramble of matter.

For your contemplation
Going deep in deep water in a deep freeze of winter.
One of the hardest imperatives of self knowledge is to put into practice what you learn.
Unconscious patterns do not want to be discovered nor rooted out. They will fight for their lives despite the the healing the arises from exposure.
Three people, all wise teachers, taught me that cold water swimming has extraordinary healing properties, especially for depression, anxiety and various bodily aches, pains and conditions, even chronic ones.
My patterns are crafty and often crazy. I saw the benefits sometime ago when first introduced to cold water swimming when working with a well known high performance team. They used it to train elite athletes to breathe and relate differently to extreme discomforts.
Patterns that wish to remain anonymous, plying their mischief and illusions, will delay action when inspiration occurs. So off I went to study, ask, read, YouTube, forget and then be reminded by these teachers about this proven remedy to reduce suffering.
Alongside a loving, four legged life guard, I took the plunge in Lake Ontario during Toronto’s coldest day of the year (it feels like minus 1000).
My confused life guard waited patiently knowing he’ll get to chase more stones once his odd friend is out of the deep. While deep, I was surprised how calm I felt on both mind and body. Please God, more of that.
This was a spiritual practice as most of my athletic pursuits are.
No glory here. No participation medal or podium finish. Though those are also important, perhaps, this was another cobblestone laid on the long, long road of knowing-and embodying-what it means to be fully human.
Much more study, learning and embodying ahead on dry land, wet waters and inner realms.
Now to carry water, chop wood and root out those pattens that want to remain hidden.
Freedom is difficult.

Take this aspect of yourself out for a test drive: the witness.
It’s that ever present part of us that observes beyond what the mind assesses and the eyes see and all other physical senses perform.
The witness is a very helpful ally, especially when caught in a difficult place. It’s a temporary refuge when your mind is going crazy and feelings overwhelm.
From this place you have a chance to reflect, accept and transcend. To go beyond that suffering to another place where peace resides.
So marvel at the weird and wonderful intricacies of this space suit you’ve been given: the body and mind encasing limitless spirit using nature to detach from the materials and reattach with spirit.
(By the way, we require more than just the capacity to observe. We also must seek and commit to a proven teaching that reveals what it means to be fully human: self knowledge).
Learn and embody that wisdom and ignorance dissolves.
But before all that, let’s marvel in nature, and set aside the ever overworked mind and body, caught in incessant fears and desires.
We are more-far more-than what we think.

Nothing to do!
If inclined and you want to learn navigation of the mind, try one of two exercises. Both are designed to see how the mind’s software program works, important because so much exists unconsciously.
1) observe all sights and sounds as your sole focus. Just observe. When thoughts and feelings and other intrusions arise, allow them to surface, but maintain your focus on the content presented here. This begins an inquiry into concentration. Especially concentrating on things that give you care. You might see two aspects running: the software program (with feverish thoughts and feelings intruding, pulsing) and the witness (with the necessary capacity to host it all with dispassionately)
2) Know your witness: observe without engaging in the many colours, shapes, objects man made and natural. This is a slightly more challenging exercise. It is as if you peer at earth from the Space Station. Do not engage/focus on objects. Just observe it all, and, if possible, observe you observing. This practice requires practice. It also requires learning and embodiment of universal values to apply to your life (such as equanimity, dispassion, acceptance). These values qualify one for self knowledge because they quiet the mind. A peaceful mind enables one to learn the subtle lessons of self knowledge- to know what it means to be fully human.
