What's that I see...?

IT'S YOGA IN THE HUMBER VALLEY! 🧘🏻‍♀️🙏🏼🧘🏽

I have been waiting a loooong time to announce of the return of my outdoor yoga and movement study classes. The province has now revealed that we'll be moving into Stage 1 of reopening on Friday, which means we can start back up again with a maximum capacity of 10 people (including me) per class. Finally!

My plan is to host one early-morning weekday class, one early evening weekday class, and one Sunday morning session. All classes will be one hour in duration and will be held in the Humber Valley, near Warren Park - easy to get to and lots of street parking available.

Classes are all-levels, crafted to suit a range of ages and abilities, to help support you in your everyday activities. Keeping accessibility in mind, classes will be PWYC, with a suggested contribution scale of $10-$15 per person, per class.

As capacity is limited, preregistration is required. You can get on the registration list by sending me a DM or emailing me at ian [at] threebrancheswellness [dot] com. Please message me with any questions.

A bit about me: I am a RYT and movement educator with 17 years of practice under my belt and 9 years of teaching experience. In that time I have immersed myself in ongoing study in the fields of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, pain science and trauma-informed instruction. My mandate is to provide high-quality classes that take our varied bodies and needs into consideration, with focus on building strength, mobility and stability, exploring your capacity to regulate and calm your nervous system activity, and a deep, meditative and present-minded awareness. My main studio in the neighbourhood is Conquer Fitness Bloor West Village (formerly System Fitness), where I have been instructing since 2014.

I am so looking forward to seeing people in person again! 😊

To your good health!

Ian

Tomorrow's 10 a.m. Movement Lab is a special affair. Typically, my last movement class of the year wraps up with a dance party, and this year will be no exception. 40 minutes of warm-up followed by 20 minutes of shaking your groove thing (yeah yeah!) to a mix I prepared just for the occasion.

To join in, make your way to - https://www.twitch.tv/threebrancheswellness - and wait for the video to start. No account or subscription required, just some space to move and speakers or headphones for your audio.

Hope to see you on the dance floor!

LAST WEEK OF ONLINE CLASSES BEFORE THE HOLIDAYS

I'll be taking a breather from teaching, from December 21 through to January 4.

Rather than the usual free, 3 day archive, my existing online classes will be staying up on my FB personal page for that duration (and for 14 days on my Twitch page), for those of you who wish to maintain your practices over the holidays.

Thank you to all who have joined in and who have helped support my efforts with your generous donations. Wishing you good health and much happiness as we transition into the new year. 🙏🏽

Having included a photo of a cat in my last IG post, I recently received notice that my Annual Yoga Teacher Cat Tax Video (yes, it's a real thing, lookitup) is due by December 15. Sunny and I coordinated our schedules and hammered this out late last week. Well under the wire and we're now good until 2021. Thanks, buddy.⁣ 😸

Stripey orange feline and I would also like to take this opportunity to remind that this is your last week to get in on shiatsu/yoga/movement gift certificate specials at TBW. This year treat your loved ones (this includes you!) to a nourishing, life-affirming experience.* Deals wrap up on December 15.⁣ 🎁👈🏽

Behind the scenes...⁣

Recently, a friend remarked that in my online classes my practice area looks deceivingly expansive. As you can see in the pic above, the reality is somewhat different. When space is at a premium, inventiveness becomes de rigueur. It ain't pretty, it's a tad precarious, but it works and that's what matters.⁣

For the tech nerds out there, here is what I use to air my live streams:⁣

- ancient Dell M4600 workstation running @_obsstudio⁣
(massive, but with great specs, (relatively) portable and virtually indestructible)⁣
- Logitech C920 we**am⁣
(still experimenting to see if I can use a USB extender cable without causing buffering issues, so the stool can reclaim its rightful place on the floor)⁣
- Blue Snowball microphone⁣
- less ancient Dell E7450 that monitors my feeds on @restreamio, Twitch and Facebook⁣

The last couple of weeks have been spent updating, removing and reinstalling drivers and programs and testing, testing, testing to get the most bang and the least amount of glitchiness in my feeds. Patience and persistence has yielded 30fps video that can be viewed up to 1080p at a 6K bitrate - not too shabby.⁣

Today, the last step will be to play around with the audio filters in OBS to improve sound quality for my mic. This might prove a bit tricky, as the Snowball is meant for close-up talking and when I teach I'm all over the room. But I'm always up for a good challenge.⁣

If you're up for a good challenge, Power Yoga airs tonight at 5:30 p.m,. Strength-based mobility for tough times. Link to access classes and schedule in the bio.⁣

TBW HOLIDAY GIFT CERTIFICATES⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Whether on the news or in conversation with others, you've likely heard how government mandated restrictions are deeply impacting local businesses. While mega-corporations like Amazon and Walmart continue to operate at full capacity and take in record profits, small-scale retail and services suffer. Through no fault of proprietors, years spent building viable livelihoods that often enrich their communities are ending with shuttered doors. It's all quite sad, and challenging to see how this gutting of local business will heal when we finally come out the other side of our current dilemma.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This holiday season there has emerged a big push to help funnel some of that revenue back into local economies. If you wish to support this movement, please consider purchasing your gifts from businesses in and around your neighbourhood. You'll enjoy gratitude from both your gift receiver and from the small-scale establishments that you've helped out.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Every year around this time, I offer specials on my gift certificates and this year is no exception. If nourishing, life-affirming and sustaining experiences sound like something family members or friends would appreciate, this limited time offer will be sure to please.⁣⁣

Moving well at 51...or any age.

Curve and Spiral

These days, it isn't too often that I record and share my self-practices. Yesterday I had opportunity to do so while optimising the settings for my live stream classes.

These excerpts are taken from about 40 minutes of improvised movement play, balancing engagement with releasing to gravity, exploring potential for easeful and efficient paths.

There are some limitations inherent in dynamically moving a 1.82m long body in a 3m sq. area. At the same time, it's more than enough to cover the basics. I do miss having space to practice big, courageous leaps. 😉

Power Yoga at 5:30 tonight on Twitch and Facebook. The curvy, spiral goods can be found in Sunday's Movement Lab. Link to the full schedule here: threebrancheswellness.com/schedule/

Fostering healthy neighbourhoods through evolving self-care practices.

Growth – the capacity to adapt creatively to change.

Homeostasis – the relative balance of our internal systems, the maintenance of optimal conditioning for any given situation.

Aware of it or not, in our efforts to navigate life, we’re constantly seeking to balance these two states. Both are necessary to function in the world; the former responding to negative feedback (“I’m cold, I’d better put something warm on!”), the latter to positive feedback (“I was cold a lot, running helped to improve my circulation!”) A few of the many methods we use to influence this balance include our diet, exercise, rest and sleep, social bonds, and trying out new hobbies and other creative ventures. Still, maintaining harmony within ourselves and with others can be tricky – too little change can lead to stagnation, while too much can be taxing on the nervous system, digestion, etc., upsetting our internal equilibrium.

Societally, we often hear this juggling act referred to as “work-life balance”. We look for it, we ask for it, but when it comes around to actually finding it, we sometimes find ourselves falling short of the mark. This is often due a common misconception that one tool will fulfill all of our self-care needs.
