Many of us are used to thinking about diets as something we do short-term without much enjoyment, but I designed the Pegan Diet not to be something we go “on” and “off” of -- The Pegan Diet is rather a way of life.
The goal is not to be perfect, but to follow a simple set of principles that can help us stay healthy. It’s about doing your best and letting go of food stress and anxiety.
I want you to eat real, whole foods. Sometimes that means following a recipe, and other times that means using what you have to make what you can. As you become more familiar with the Pegan Diet, shopping for the right foods and creating your own healthy meals will become second nature.
Remember, that true health isn’t just about losing a few pounds or about the absence of chronic disease, it’s about feeling good, showing up, and giving your highest gifts to the world.

There is so much focus on the state of our metabolic health, and with good reason. Metabolic health includes things like body weight, blood sugar, blood pressure, lipid profiles, and other metrics. Keeping these metabolic markers optimized is central to reducing risk for things like coronary heart disease, Alzheimer’s, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and many other chronic degenerative conditions.
Eggs offer up advantages related to our metabolic health and are an excellent source of key things our bodies can use, including cholesterol, protein, choline, and micronutrients. Eggs are also on THE LUV DIET, meaning they don’t threaten uric acid levels. Good to know since elevated uric acid is a powerful contributor to metabolic mayhem.

Just a reminder!!
Mother Nature has a plan & she’s smarter than us!
This time of year we always feel compelled to make our yards & lawns look “tidy”. We get that one last mow in, or we rake up those leaves into bags or burn piles. Sadly we are doing more harm than good!
So….?
Try skipping those boring chores this year!
(Woo hoo! 🤗)
Let nature do what she does best! Let her nurture the plants and animals through fall & winter. I promise you that soon the snow will cover up your “untidy” yard & hide things until it melts in the spring. Then after a few spring weeks, what’s left of those yucky leaves will naturally be mulched back into your soil & your yard will be a healthier & stronger ecosystem next year for all who live there!❤️

Some of my tips and tricks for relieving your spring allergies🌸

05/11/2022
Do you think over-the-counter medication is the only solution to treating your seasonal allergies? Let me introduce 4 foods to you that may help alleviate your symptoms.
Ginger
Many uncomfortable allergy symptoms are caused by inflammatory issues, such as swelling and irritation in the nasal passages, eyes, and throat.
Ginger's antioxidative and antiinflammatory properties help calm down the inflammation and alleviate those symptoms.
Citrus fruits
citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruit, lemons, limes, sweet peppers, and berries have a high amount of vitamin C. Foods high in vitamin C have been shown to decrease the irritation of the upper respiratory system which is typically caused by pollen.
Turmeric
Similar to ginger, turmeric is also a powerful anti-inflammatory food which helps reduce symptoms of many inflammation-driven diseases such as seasonal allergies.
Onions
Onions are an excellent natural source of quercetin, a bioflavonoid that acts as a natural antihistamine, reducing the symptoms of seasonal allergies.

This is not to say that you shouldn’t eat any of the dirty dozen but make sure to wash, clean, and peel them properly before eating, and if possible, get them organic.
This delicious recipe is perfect for those who want to eat healthy but don't have a lot of time because it can all be made in the crock pot. It is low in calorie, high in fibre and great for healthy aging!
Ingredients
4 cups cubed peeled winter squash (1 1/4 pounds; 1-inch cubes)
1 cup red lentils, rinsed
1/2 cup toor dal (split pigeon peas), rinsed
⅓ cup millet
1 tablespoon Kashmiri chile powder (see Tips)
2 teaspoons ground coriander
1 ½ teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon ground cumin
½ teaspoon ground turmeric
½ teaspoon ground pepper
5 cups water
2 tablespoons ghee or canola oil
15 fresh curry leaves (see Tips) (Optional)
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon black or brown mustard seeds
Pinch of asafetida (see Tips)
2 cups fresh or frozen corn kernels
Fresh cilantro for garnish
Herbed Yogurt
2 cups whole-milk plain yogurt
¾ cup chopped fresh cilantro
¼ cup chopped fresh mint
Pinch of salt
Directions
Step 1
Combine squash, lentils, toor dal, millet, chile powder, coriander, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, cumin, turmeric and pepper in a 4- to 7-quart slow cooker. Add water and cover. Cook on Low for 8 hours or High for 4 hours.
Step 2
Meanwhile, prepare herbed yogurt: Whisk yogurt, 3/4 cup cilantro, mint and a pinch of salt in a medium bowl. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
Step 3
Just before serving, heat ghee (or oil) in a small skillet over medium heat. Add curry leaves (if using), cumin seeds, mustard seeds and asafetida; cook, stirring, until the seeds start to pop and darken in color, about 30 seconds; immediately scrape into the slow cooker and cover.
Step 4
Add corn to the pan and cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until just tender, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the corn to the slow cooker and gently stir to combine. Serve topped with the yogurt and garnished with cilantro, if desired.
Serving Size: 1 cup dal & 1/4 cup herbed yogurt
Per Serving: 306 calories; protein 14g; carbohydrates 48.5g; dietary fiber 8g

So what is insulin resistance?
Insulin is a hormone that allows sugar from the blood to enter your cells so it can be used for energy. Insulin resistance happens when your cells don’t respond well to insulin so they can’t take up sugar from the blood.
What causes insulin resistance?
Besides generic factors, the main causes of insulin resistance are:
🟠Obesity (especially fat around the belly)
🟠Inactive lifestyle
🟠Diet high in carbohydrates
How can you fix it?
When treating patients with insulin resistance I always take a personalized approach after running some bloodwork to make sure that their treatment plan is customized to address their specific concerns. You can also try these lifestyle changes to make some improvements in your insulin resistance:
🟠Exercise (high intensity)
🟠Cut down on carbs and sugar
🟠Intermittent fasting
🟠Reduce stress
If you think you are struggling insulin resistance and feel you’re ready to start living your best life, book a complimentary 15-minute appointment with me!
