Now that I have to work from home for the next month, continuing education is a great way to brush up on some Education. 3 day Medical Exercise Continuing Education Courses:

Day 1- Diabetes Type 2:
-Commonly Affecting Those People with Diabetes (90%). #. Of those with Type 2 Diabetes 80% are Overweight and or Obese causing further cardiovascular health issues. Around 20% with Diabetes Type 2 are not overweight.

-Type 2 Diabetes produces Insulin, but the body’s Tissues become insulin resistant.

-Insulin Resistant Factors mainly include Race, Obesity Levels, and most importantly Inactivity as the major culprit. Age isn’t included as Insulin itself isn’t affected by Age, however Age does have a small part to play.

-High Level of Fitness & Low Levels of Inactivity = Lower Risk of Mortality with those that have Type 2 Diabetes

-Low Activity & High Inactivity = High Risk of Mortality with those that have Type 2 Diabetes

-Note High Inactivity increase risk of Developing Type 2 Diabetes, Even if you Exercise Regularly throughout the Week. Inactivity has a major affect in both Developing Type 2 Diabetes (Pre-Diabetes) and Managing It once you develop it.

-Exercising Everyday for an Average of 60Min / Day for 5-6 Times per week will help manage insulin sensitivity levels throughout the week. For example 60 Min of Training could have a potential residual effect in insulin sensitively for up to 48 Hours....vs only training 30min will have a potential residual effect in Insulin Sensitivity for up to 24 Hours. Around 2000-3000cal burned.

-Likewise, the absolute minimum amount of Exercise recommended is 30min every other day. Translating to around 1000cal burned each week.

-Both Aerobic & Anaerobic Exercise is more effective then one or the other. Also Frequency & Consistency in training Has better overall 3 Month Testing for Hemoglobin (HbA1C) for Good Index of Glucose Control.

-Finally Exercise yields More Effect on improving/ managing Type 2 Diabetes then just Diet or Oral Medications Alone. It also Yields better improved risk prevention - Lifestyle Intervention (Exercise & Diet) provides around 60% overall effect, while medication alone provides around only 30%.

Day 2 - Working with Clients that have Thyroid Diseases.
-This Course focuses primarily on the understanding of each disease, Symptomology, Surgical and Therapy Treatment options, response to various Treatment Options, Pathophysiology and Pharmaceutical Complications During Response to Treatment Options, and Exercise Prescription for Various Types of Clinet’s and associated Thyroid Diseases:

-Hyperthyroidism Vs. Hypothyroidism

-Thyroid Cancer

-Graves Disease

-Thyroid Treatments:
-Radioactive Iodine Therapy,
-External Beam Radiation,
-Hormonal Replacement Therapy,
-Chemotherapy

-Complications to Treatments:
-Thyroidectomy,
-Near-Total Thyroidectomy,
-Cervical Lymph Node Dissection,
-Beta Blockers,
-Steroids,
-Lymphedema.

Day 3 - Working with Cancer Patients.
-This course focused on working with Cancer Patients and provided a good introduction to various considerations:
-Types of Cancer

-Causes of Cancer

-Types of Treatments for Cancer

-Acute Side Effects

-Chronic Side Effects

-Lymphedema Considerations

-Signs & Symptoms of Lymphedema

-Precautions of Lymphedema

-Communication with Healthcare Practitioners

-Cancer Exercise

-Lymph Drainage Exercise

-Scope of Practise
