National Day for Truth and Reconciliation - Canada.ca

September 30th, is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a dedicated time to reflect on the ongoing violence against Indigenous peoples perpetuated by settlers and institutions in Kanata.

As medical students, we participate in these systems of genocide, colonialism, and oppression which are current and not merely historic.

The denial of Indigenous ways of healing, concerted efforts of forced sterilization, school-to-prison pipeline, and policing of Indigenous caregivers are all ways the institution of medicine operates from a place of anti-Indigenous racism.

We must understand that a day for truth and reconciliation does not guarantee justice for Indigenous communities, but can be an important place to start. This is only true, however, if we are committed to self-reflection and unlearning, and putting pressure on our institutions to remain accountable to Indigenous communities.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is observed September 30. The day honours First Nations, Inuit and Métis Survivors and their families and communities and ensures that public commemoration of the tragic and painful history of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliati...

Elizabeth Jameson is an artist who connects neuroscience and art through her work. After being diagnosed with MS, Jameson began transforming her MRI scans into inspiring and thought-provoking works of art. Along with her art, she now writes and speaks around the world about her experience with illness and disease. These include work in The New York Times, British Medical Journal, WIRED magazine, MIT’s Leonardo Journal and her TEDxStanford talk, “Learning to Celebrate and Embrace Our Imperfect Bodies.” We invite you to join "Creativity as a Response to Chronic Illness" on November 12 at 6 pm over Zoom! https://www.facebook.com/events/807909023082944"
