Today is World Children's Day and this year's theme is 'For Every Child, Every Right!' The day serves as a powerful reminder of the unwavering commitment to ensuring that all children, regardless of their background or circumstances, are afforded the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential. At MedicAlert, we've been supporting children since our inception in 1961. And our focus grew in 2008 when we created our No Child Without Program which has helped keep more than 60,000 Canadian children safe. This year we launched a special curriculum called Students Assisting Friends Everywhere. S.A.F.E. for short. The momentum for S.A.F.E is growing as we work with school boards across Canada to integrate it into the physical education curriculum. S.A.F.E. helps kids with chronic health conditions self-advocate in school to ensure they can reach their greatest potential. It also teaches peer empathy. Learn more about No Child Without and the S.A.F.E. Program. https://hubs.ly/Q029qQ-10

And to support our efforts as we get closer to Giving Tuesday, please consider a donation to MedicAlert's No Child Without Program. You can help enrich a life this World Children's Day. https://hubs.ly/Q029qTPz0

Fact or Myth? I don’t need anything other than a medical bracelet that I can get at my local pharmacy.

MYTH: MedicAlert is the original and the ONLY medical ID endorsed by all first responder associations in Canada. Why? Because the bracelet is just the beginning. First responders rely on the detailed health information contained in our Members’ Emergency Health Record. MedicAlert is the ORIGINAL and ONLY provider of Emergency Health Record services in Canada. And we’re the only one trusted and recommended by first responders from coast to coast to coast.

Fact or Myth?
MedicAlert bracelets haven’t changed in decades.

MYTH: While people are most familiar with our “classic” MedicAlert bracelet, over the past 20 years we’ve added a wide variety of styles and materials to reflect the changing tastes of Canadians. You can now choose from more than 150 different styles – from the classic stainless steel to leather, beaded, silicone, watches, sports bands and even 14K gold options. But what even more important is that MedicAlert trains first responders on all our products. That’s why our IDs are only worn on the body’s pulse points (wrist and neck) – the first place a first responder will look during a health emergency.

Fact or Myth?

MedicAlert does not get any provincial funding.

FACT: While we would love the support of the various ministries our work intersects in each province – from Health and Public Safety to Education, Community & Social Services, and Indigenous Affairs – MedicAlert does not get any “base funding” from these ministries. To keep our service fees lower than what it costs us to deliver them and meet our mission of keeping Canadians protected through the exchange of health information with the first response community, we rely on donations from across Canada to help us deliver our programs and services.

Fact or Myth?

I only need to wear my MedicAlert ID when I go out.

MYTH: The vast majority of health emergencies occur in and around a person’s home or place of residence. If your health emergency renders you unable to communicate, MedicAlert is able to speak for you. Not only do first responders have access to your ID, but they can also access your MedicAlert Emergency Health Record which gives them significantly greater information to work with to ensure you get the kind of care you need before and during transport to hospital.

FACT OR MYTH?

When it comes to dementia, no one knows if their loved one may wander.

FACT: However, when it comes to this centuries old dementia-related mystery, MedicAlert, which runs Canada’s National Wandering Registry and has one of the most comprehensive databases of wandering histories in the world, is beginning to see patterns in the data that could change the way we look at wandering.

MedicAlert has one of the largest health information databases in Canada.

FACT: With more than one million members, MedicAlert is considered to have one of, if not the largest, health information databases in Canada. How do we manage all of that information? We have a team of internationally trained healthcare professionals who are responsible for ensuring our members’ information is up-to-date and accurate. Fact or Myth?

All medical IDs are the same.

MYTH: IDs you can purchase at your local pharmacy are too generic for effective first-response use. For example, the ID may say you have diabetes, but what it won’t tell first responders is anything about the medications you are taking, or other health conditions you may have that could impact how they respond in a health emergency.

Fact or Myth?

Search and rescue missions are all about finding people lost in the mountains or the backcountry.

MYTH: While we often see search and rescue missions that involve helicopters, airplanes or the coast guard. Those missions are the most dramatic and get the most media coverage. In fact, most search and rescue missions are conducted by police and volunteer units on the ground and tend to involve people with Alzheimer’s or dementia or another form of cognitive difference such as Autism Spectrum Disorder or Acquired Brain Injury where wandering and or disorientation are a part of the condition. For the past decade, MedicAlert has managed Canada’s National Wandering Registry. Recently we connected directly to the country’s brand new Ground Search and Rescue Incident Command System (GSAR-ICS) – a first-of-its-kind measure to centralize ground search and rescue in Canada.

A dementia diagnosis means people have to limit their activities.

MYTH: While a dementia diagnosis is scary and comes with real concerns, there are several options designed to help individuals and families living their best lives like MedicAlert’s Safe and Found program, people like Andrea and Geoff can continue to live life without worrying quite as much about the potential dangers that come with wandering or bouts of confusion. Fact or Myth?

More than 40% of calls to MedicAlert’s 24/7 Hotline are for wandering.

FACT: Alzheimer’s and other dementias are one of the fasted growing health populations in Canada. It’s estimated that 28,000 Canadians living with dementia will wander in the next year. MedicAlert’s goal is to take the worry out of wandering. We assumed management of the National Wandering Registry in 2012 at the request of the Alzheimer Society of Canada and the RCMP who previously managed the system. Since that time, the number of people on the Registry has doubled to more than 60,000 people. Without the Registry and MedicAlert intervention in a wandering incident, estimates suggest that 50% of People Living with Dementia who wander will suffer serious injury or death if they are not found within 24 hours. Our approach is delivering results with 91% of our clients who wandered reunited with their loved one’s unharmed.

Fact or Myth?

My parent lives in a memory care facility and doesn’t need a MedicAlert ID and service.

MYTH: If your parent is still mobile and wanders, the risk that they will wander away from a memory care facility is still quite high. While facilities do a very good job at keeping residents safe, recent research conducted by MedicAlert and the University of Waterloo confirms that 20% of people with dementia who wander will wander from a memory care facility.

Fact or Myth?

First Responders already have access to my health information.

BOTH: It depends on the province you live in whether or not First Responders have direct access to your health information. In Canada’s two largest provinces, Ontario and Quebec, this is not the case.

HOWEVER, in provinces where Paramedics do have access to health records, the system is not built for emergency response use. This means the information is rarely used BEFORE arrival on scene.

This is where MedicAlert comes in. The information we collect and distribute to all first responders is relevant to how they use that information when they are managing a health emergency.

Fact or Myth?

MedicAlert is a charity.

FACT: Since MedicAlert generates revenue from the sale of our Medical ID, Membership subscriptions as well as donations, people will often ask us if we are a really a charity.

It is a common misconception that charities rely only on donations to help them meet their missions.

The Canada Revenue Agency allows charities to generate revenue in all kinds of ways as long as the intended goal meets the following pre-approved criteria and/or the work of the charity delivers a public benefit :

a. relief of poverty
b. advancement of education
c. advancement of religion
d. certain other purposes beneficial to the community in a way the law regards as charitable

Fact or Myth?

I’m ok in a health emergency. All of my health information is stored on my smart phone.

MYTH: While smart phones are a great way to keep track of health information, they’re not the “go-to” in a health emergency. When first responders arrive on scene, they’re moving fast. They need information to be available either before they get there or as they arrive. Looking for a cell phone, finding an app, and scrolling through to find your health data takes precious time away from saving your life. With MedicAlert’s connection to Canada’s 9-1-1 Communications Centres, first responders on scene work in tandem with their dispatchers to get detailed health information that can help save your life.

Fact or Myth?

Law enforcement agencies have become the social and mental health services of first resort.

FACT: In 2014, the House of Commons’ Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security heard from police chiefs across the country and found that 70 to 80 percent of the calls police received were not related to crime. MedicAlert wanted to do something about this increasing trend to help support our Police partners. We call it HELP 9-1-1 (Health Exchange Linking Police) a pilot project in the city of Ottawa that went live on October 16 of this year. HELP 9-1-1 connects MedicAlert’s Emergency Health Information Database directly with the Ottawa 9-1-1 Communications Centre’s dispatch software in less than one second after a 9-1-1 call is received. This means frontline first responders – police-fire and ambulance -- have information about a person’s health conditions before they arrive on scene. What’s more? HELP 9-1-1 has already played a role in a 9-1-1 call showing just how important this new pilot project is to the health and wellbeing of a vulnerable individual.

As a care partner to someone living with dementia, we know your most significant worry is not knowing if they’ll wander or when it will happen. The loss of memory from dementia can impact their ability to recognize where they are and make it difficult for them to find their way home, or even communicate in a critical situation.

That’s where MedicAlert’s Safe & Found Program comes in: https://www.medicalert.ca/safe-and-found. Our goal is to keep people living with dementia safe and give their caregivers the peace of mind they need.

Since 2012, we've protected over 50,000 people living with Alzheimer's and other dementias through our blue dementia ID and condition-specific health information stored securely in our Subscriber Health Information Database. Our program has trained thousands of first responders to understand the meaning of our ID and respond swiftly and effectively to reunite loved ones with their families and care partners.

Let us take away the worry of wandering!

In 2022, MedicAlert and a team of researchers from the University of Waterloo completed a first-of-its-kind study using data from the National Wandering Registry which MedicAlert runs and manages on behalf of Canadians living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

And here is a peek at some of what we learned:

➡️90% of people living with dementia who are registered with MedicAlert and wander are found with no apparent injuries or compromised health!

This is just the beginning of what could be life-changing for people with dementia and their families. With a MedicAlert subscription, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved one will be found quickly and safely if they wander.
