Know your persona. That's the public face you project to the world.

I brand myself as Magic Mike. Not the st****er Magic Mike, I'm a bit old for that one. I'm Magic Mike as the motivator and the potentiator. I'm the CEO co-pilot who helps leaders fly at high altitudes. I'm the call whisperer, the leader whisperer, the champion whisperer.

So what's your persona? How do you want people to see you? Write down the first thoughts that come to mind. Don't worry about getting it perfect, just get it down.

When someone gives you a vague, guarded answer, like "I just want to keep my money safe," don't let it sit there unexplored.

Affirm it first: "Absolutely, if I were you, that's exactly what I'd be thinking about."

Then reflect it back gently: "When you say you want to keep your money safe, help me understand what that actually means to you."

That single follow-up turns a generic answer into a real conversation, because you've shown the person their surface-level answer was heard, and you're genuinely curious about what's underneath it.

What's the safest, vaguest answer you've gotten from someone recently, and what question could have opened it up?

A deal will collapse. A client will walk. There will be swerves and there will be setbacks. That part isn't up for debate.

What matters is what happens to you when they arrive.

This is why you need a North Star: one sentence that tells you who you are and why you do what you do. When the detour hits, your North Star is how you find your way back without losing yourself. The detour doesn't change the destination.

And here's something else I want you to remember. So many people are counting on your performance. Your team. Your clients. Your family. The people who don't even know your name yet, but who will be better off because you showed up at your best.

On a rough week, that's worth holding onto. Your best reaches people you may never meet.

So write the sentence. Keep it short enough to remember in the middle of a bad day.

What's your North Star in one sentence?

Pollyanna says, "This tariff is a gift. It's forcing us to find new markets."

The operator says, "Great. Name three by Friday."

That exchange is the whole secret to thriving in times like these. You have to marry two people who usually don't get along.

The first is Pollyanna. She believes. She sees the upside. She walks into a room and the temperature rises by three degrees.

The second is the tough-minded operator. He counts. He asks, "What's the number? Who owns it and by when?" He doesn't confuse hope with a forecast.

Pollyanna alone is a nice person going broke. The operator alone is a smart person nobody wants to follow. Together, they are unstoppable.

Opportunity is everywhere right now. US employers added 162,000 jobs in August, and AI investment is driving massive demand for data centers and chips. It's just wearing a disguise. Optimism helps you see it. Discipline helps you capture it.

Which one do you lean on too much, the Pollyanna or the operator?

Even the world's best motivators have off days.

I had one of those days at the airport — the kind where it takes everything you've got just to keep up. Head down, no smile, just trying to get to the lounge.

A stranger stopped me.

"If you're Mike Lipkin, why aren't you smiling?"

That hit hard.

Wherever you are, someone is watching.
Wherever you are, someone is evaluating the energy you're sending into that space.
You never know when that stranger will become an incredibly important part of your life.

Treat every person like they're your most important client — because one day, they might be.

When you make your customers smarter, safer, and more successful, three things happen.

They pay you for it. They stay with you. They tell their friends.

That is why I say bringing value is the most reliable profit strategy on Earth. Being truly profitable starts with being truly useful, and the way to get there is to stop chasing the sale and start chasing the result your customer needs.

So be a potentiator. That's my North Star: someone who makes everyone around them better. Then watch what happens to your numbers.

You don't have to choose between doing good and doing well. In a market where customers are confused and competitors are waiting, the person who makes everyone around them better becomes the obvious choice. Revenue follows value, and it follows loyally.

Think about your best customer or colleague. What did you do that made them smarter, safer, or more successful?

There's an old African proverb I love: words cut down trees, the ax is just an instrument.

Before anything gets done, it gets said. When you just think an idea, it only lives in your head. The moment you speak it out loud, you plant that seed in someone else's mind, and that's when things start to move.

I've watched this play out my whole career. Leaders who talk about their vision, over and over, are the ones who actually get people to build it. Silence keeps ideas trapped. Words set them free.

So watch your language. It's not decoration. It's the seed of everything you're trying to grow.

Business capital spending recently fell to a two-year low. Firms everywhere are delaying major decisions because nobody is sure where US trade policy goes next.

Sit with that for a second. Your competitors are waiting. Your customers are confused. Every one of them is staring into the same fog you are.

Confusion creates a gap. Your customers are looking for someone who can see clearly, speak confidently, and help them make a decision. Not someone with a perfect forecast, because nobody has one. Someone willing to say, here's what I see, here's what I would do, and here's why.

That someone is you.

In uncertain stretches, people don't stop buying or following. They stop trusting the people who go quiet. The leader who picks up the phone, offers a clear view and stays steady becomes the person everyone remembers when things settle down.

So don't wait for the fog to lift before you show up. Show up because of the fog.

Who needs a clear decision from you this week?

Fear is contagious. So is joy.

In a world full of gloom, the person who brings the sunshine becomes irresistible. Think about the people you actually look forward to seeing. They may not have the best title or the most polished pitch. They make you feel good, and they make the journey worth it.

People buy from people who make them feel good. They follow people who make the journey worth it.

Some days that's hard. Prices are up, the headlines are loud, and your calendar is full. But your energy walks into the room before you do. When you bring calm, optimism and a plan, the people around you borrow it, and borrowed courage is real courage.

So here's my challenge. Accept what you cannot change. Attack what you can. Keep your eye on your North Star. And bring the sunshine wherever you go.

Pollyanna with a plan. That's you, and that's me. Now go make it happen.

Who is one person you can brighten up today?

10/08/2026

Grab a piece of paper and draw two circles. It takes about a minute and it can change your whole week.

In the first circle, write everything you cannot change: tariffs, interest rates, oil prices, what some politician tweets at midnight. Now accept it. Don't waste one ounce of emotional energy fighting the weather.

In the second circle, write everything you can change: your next call, your next conversation, how prepared you are, how generous you are, how quickly you bounce back.

Then pour everything you've got into that second circle. That's how you attack your opportunities head-on.

Notice the difference between the two. The first circle is loud. It's on every screen and in every conversation. The second circle is quiet, and it's the only one that moves your results or your mood.

That's where peace of mind comes from. Not from certainty, from clarity about what's yours to own.

What's the first thing you'd write in your second circle today?
