The Natural Beauty Society:
Rooted in Heritage, Growing Into Today
What the Natural Beauty Society is about
The Natural Beauty Society was founded on a simple, powerful belief: beauty and health cannot
be separated. As Linda Rose put it at the Society's first public symposium, the mission is "to
educate consumers about combining external and internal care because the human body must
be taken from a holistic approach."
In practice, that means three things:
Chemical-free hair care. The Society promotes a "chemically-free" beauty industry —
braids, extensions, twists, and natural styling instead of harsh chemical processes. Body and
Soul, the salon behind the Society, built its reputation on this: no chemical curls, no
damaging treatments, only gentle, nourishing care.
Black-owned products. The Society actively promotes Black-owned product lines — like
Kemi, the African American herbal haircare company featured at the founding event — to halt
the exploitation of the African-Canadian community by White-owned health and beauty aid
companies. As Rose said plainly: "Although we (African Canadians) consume a lot, we have
very little."
Holistic wellness. Hair is treated as part of the whole body. The Society's events have
always paired hair education with health education — from naturopathic and traditional
Chinese medicine practitioners teaching that the body can cure itself, to the core principle
