Nazbah Tom https://linktr.ee/nazbah.tom One's current "shape" is the sum of a person's lived experience up until now. Family. Society. Institutions. Systems. Landscapes.

Somatic bodywork uses conversation, touch, breath, gesture, and practice to move the mind/body/spirit from a historically conditioned "shape" to one that is aligned with the person's visions and goals. This includes the body they were born into, the memories, the wounds, hopes and dreams that the body holds. History of one's community. These elements have literally physically shaped, moulded the person's identity, relationship to others and how they negotiate the world that they live in. To give you an example (these are not actual case examples):

Greg is a First Nations man who has lived most of his life in urban Vancouver. Although he has a well paying job as a social worker, he is riddled with fear that he is living paycheque to paycheque and is too scared to use his funds for pleasurable things like travel or take time off work for self care. Greg comes to Somatics with complaints of the inability to sustain a relationship, feeling too tired to workout, and not sleeping well. Mary is a white woman who lives a financially comfortable life thanks to an inheritance given to her after the death of her father. While she enjoys the privilege of owning a home, she is consistently unhappy knowing the source of her comfortable lifestyle. Mary comes to Somatics with symptoms of anxiety, inability to sleep, explosive anger, which she directs at her partner. During the course of her work with Somatics, it is revealed that her inheritance is from a sexually abusive parent. People generally know what is working and not working about their historical shape, and it's the ways in which it is not working in their relationship to self, others, and the world that they want to change and shift.

Testimonials: what our students are saying about their experiences with Somatic Resurgence

“...A masterclass in co-facilitation. Fayza, Kai Cheng, and Nazbah each brought a strong sense of presence, care, and attentiveness, and together they created a facilitation dynamic that felt both seamless and deeply supportive. The container they cultivated was safe, spacious, and expansive, allowing for a depth of presence that made meaningful learning, reflection, and experimentation possible.” (Remaining text in comments)

“I have been longing for this kind of connection and learning that takes place outside of institutionalized spaces...I still feel more centred and connected to myself and feel much more capable of showing up for the causes and communities I care about. Prior to this I was feeling collapsed from fear and overwhelm and I now feel much more capable of staying centred while engaging with the realities of the world. I hope to continue these practices in my life and in my work. Thank you!”

“I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to engage with these teachings and practices, and to do so within a collective learning environment that felt both supportive and transformative...The course has left a meaningful impression on me, and I will carry many of these learnings forward into both my personal life and my artistic and community practices.”

“Despite some of the activities being at the edge of my comfort zone I was able to engage because I always knew I had choice...I really appreciated how genuine Fayza, Kai Cheng, and Nazbah were, and I found that it helped me take risks and show up as honestly as I could.”

“I have been looking for somewhere like this for years...I came back today to 1-1 work and am finding it so natural to bring in some of what we practiced.”

“I'm grateful to have been a part of this learning and training as it is a training I will hold very close to my heart as I move through my work and my own healing journey.”

“You are all beautiful, generous spirits and I'm incredibly grateful to be learning somatics within a decolonial, q***r/trans positive, political, and loving framework. I look forward to the next one!”

Somatic Resurgence
ancestral, present and future transformation
2027 season of workshops brochure

Somatic Resurgence is a collective project from Nazbah Tom, Kai Cheng Thom, and Fayza Bundalli. As three seasoned somatics teachers, practitioners and bodyworkers, we bring the embodied wisdom of our life experiences and facilitate a somatics that we are proud to offer our communities, towards embodiment, collective power, and creation of new worlds.
We offer a somatics that comes from Nazbah’s Diné cosmologies, Kai Cheng’s trans femme of colour and s*x worker lineage and Fayza's embodied wisdom from chronic illness alchemy and q***r Muslim lineages. Combined, we bring over 50 years of somatics training experience and weave it with our own lineages to create Somatic Resurgence: A life-affirming, consent-forward, somatic methodology that lives in service to life, liberation, pleasure and joy for the individual and the collective. Happy Summer!

My partner and I had so much fun making this video. I had asked my colleagues (Dona, Donaji, and Sue) to share with me what they saw as my unique offering to somatics. With their feedback we came up with this video. Please enjoy and pass on to your networks.
Feel free to use the link in my bio to schedule a consultation.

Hivemind, especially folks with connections to social work, counseling, or community health programs across so called USA and Canada, do you have contacts of folks in those institutions who would bring me in for a workshop, lecture, or support their alumni working in those fields with either 1:1 somatic work for their own development and/or as their somatic supervisor.

I can offer my training and experience as part of my work with these institutions and individuals as a speaker, practitioner, or supervisor. Please DM me any emails or, if you can, connect me with folks in an email. I appreciate any leads and warm hand offs.

Thank you.
