September Clinical Field Notes are up.

This month I found myself thinking about high cholesterol showing up in younger women, what I understand differently about women's health as I get older alongside my patients, my first new patient referred by Chat GPT, and still bloating.

These are not conclusions or a review of the research, just some of the patterns and questions that came up in practice this month.

I'm really enjoying keeping this little record of what I'm noticing.

I'll let you know what next month teaches me.

One of the harder parts of practicing medicine is working with things you can't easily measure.

Two patients can have the same labs and feel completely different.

Over time you start to notice patterns that don't show up in test results:

- how someone responds to stress
- how their system holds tension
- how long they've been pushing past their limits

These things shape physiology just as much as anything we can quantify but they're harder to quantify and harder to prove.

I shared a deeper reflection on this in a recent piece on Substack. Link in bio.

"What Shapes Health Beyond What We Can Measure."

This is where a lot of real clinical work actually lives.

Depression isn't always just about mood. Sometimes it's about energy.

Emerging research is exploring the role of mitochondria, the energy producing systems in our cells, in mental health.

When cellular energy is low, it can affect: motivation, emotional resilience and cognitive clarity.

From a biological perspective, some experiences of depression may reflect a reduction in physiological capacity, not just psychological factors.

This doesn't replace therapy or medications but it can expand how we understand what someone is experiencing.

I wrote more about this in my latest post on Substack.

โ˜€๏ธ Starting in 2 weeks | UofT Continuing Studies

I'm teaching a virtual course at UofT called The Physical Path to Mental & Emotional Wellness, and we already have a great group forming.

This course is for anyone who wants to understand how hormones, digestion, inflammation, nutrients and nervous system regulation shape mood, energy, and emotional resilience.

It's also a great fit for therapists, educators, and caregivers looking for a whole-body, evidence-based framework to support mental health.

๐ŸŒฑ No prior health background needed
๐ŸŒฑ Practical, accessible, science- based

I posted a new Substack essay ๐ŸŒฑ A piece about Generational Health, stress physiology, women's health and the invisible threads that connect us to the people who came before us.

A box of silver spoons from my late grandmother set the reflection in motion and it led me somewhere unexpected.

How much of our health is our own and how much is inherited through physiology, story, stress patterns or cultural history?

A brief acknowledgement:
Many communities carry Generational trauma that shapes health in profound ways. My story is just one example, not a template, and I want to hold that with care and respect.

A mother, a daughter and a whole lot of questions about estrogen.

I turned them into this week's Substack post: The Estrogen Equation.

So many of us are taught to fix our symptoms as fast as possible. But what if the first step toward healing is to get curious about what our body is saying?

My new Substack essay explores how curiosity itself can become medicine ๐Ÿ’Š.

NEW POST ๐ŸŒธ - Perimenopause Depression

Depression during perimenopause is something I see in practice daily and something that I feel strongly about supporting.

There are many biological and physiological changes as menopause approaches and mood changes often present as a result.

This blog post gets in to some of the trends in research and points an optimistic light in the direction of research and with it treatment options!

HRT and antidepression medications are very important treatment options as is therapy but there are also other supportive pieces to look at.

Check out the post and let me know what you think!! On Substack or here ๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿ’›

New Study ๐Ÿ”Ž

Suprisingly the first study of it's kind to look at brain changes during pregnancy as they relate to postpartum depression!

Findings ๐Ÿ”Ž
โ— There are brain changes in women with depression during peripartum.
โ— Diffferent changes were seen with 1. Depression symptoms postpartum and 2. A challenging birth experience.
โ— These findings demonstrate that tracking neuroanatomical changes during the transition to motherhood can help identify vulnerabilities.
โ— Hopefully these findings will lead to more causative understanding of why these changes are present and how to support them better!
