Longevity is everywhere in this year’s trend reports. Boots calls it Project Preservation, and its 2026 report says 60% of consumers rate healthy ageing as their top priority.

I’m teaching a day on ageing skin on Monday 9th November, so I’ve been asking myself whether this is a genuine shift or anti-ageing in disguise.

If longevity means preserving how the skin functions, corneotherapy has been saying so for decades. If it still means correction with new wording, nothing has really changed.

Have you seen longevity change how treatments protocols are considered, or only how they are described?

Save this and let’s discuss in the comments.

Hello. I’m Maria, The Corneotherapy Consultant™️. There are lots of new faces here, so it feels like the right moment to reintroduce myself.

A few years ago, after a foray into aesthetics where I found myself questioning what was happening to the skin in front of me, I made the decision to niche into corneotherapy, and I’ve never looked back. I live, eat and breathe the theory and practice of this science-led approach, so much so that I now work with other skin therapists to help them on their journey.

I’m a great believer in impartial skin education, so it was important to me to teach independent of any brand. Everything I share is about the skin and the physiological reasoning behind it.

What matters most to me is supporting other skin professionals, both in their practice and in their business, whether you’re curious about corneotherapy or ready to build your work around it.

Here you’ll find me advocating for skin health, having honest and frank conversations about the beauty industry and sharing my lived experience as a both a seasoned clinic owner and passionate corneotherapist.

Make sure you’ve clicked follow, and please don’t be shy about commenting and asking questions.

To start us off, what’s one thing you were taught about skin that you’ve since started to question?

The truth is, none of us knows it all. Nor will we ever. Skin science is constantly evolving, so how could we?

What I thought I knew about skin has changed over the years. Some of what I learned, I’ve had to unlearn. That’s not a weakness. It’s what happens when you remain curious, question what you’ve been taught and stay open to new evidence.

So, do yourself a favour. Invest in your understanding. It benefits your clients, strengthens your professional practice and contributes to a more knowledgeable industry.

And I know a good place to start.

My online course, Corneotherspy:The Foundations. Functional Skin Science for Skin Pro’s is designed to deepen your understanding of skin science and Corneotherapy, helping you build knowledge you can apply with greater confidence in your practice.

It’s self-paced, CPD-approved and endorsed by HABIA, the organisation responsible for developing UK beauty industry standards.

Visit www.thecorneotherapyconsultant.co.uk to find out more.

There are also opportunities to learn together. I’d love to welcome you to our live Corneotherapy.UK gathering on 9 November, and in 2027, I’ll be bringing back my Zoom training sessions.there will be one every month.

There’s plenty to look forward to.

Now, I’d love to hear from you. What subject would you like me to cover in a future training session?

When you realise much of corneotherapy is common sense for skin, it raises the question, why it is not more common.

Corneotherapy is a progressive, restorative approach that protects the barrier and supports the natural functions of the epidermis, so the skin can do the job it was designed to do.

It isn’t a brand, a product or a protocol. It’s a way of thinking about skin that begins with understanding.

And if you’d like to learn more about the science of skin. I’m hosting an in person event on Monday 9th November all about ageing skin.

I can’t quite believe that just two weeks ago, the UK hosted the 10th IAC International Symposium in Oxford.

It was the Symposium’s first visit to the UK and I was incredibly proud to be its host and to give delegates a warm British welcome.

There were certainly moments when I wondered whether it would all come together. But it did.

And what a weekend it was.

Delegates from 19 countries came together in Oxford to explore the challenges facing skin in our modern world, sharing knowledge, questioning, discussing and, importantly, connecting.

It was exciting. It was thought-provoking. It was relevant. And there was plenty of fun along the way.

Most of all, there was a real sense of community.

Oxford, you did us proud.

Traditionally, we’ve been taught to categorise skin into types. It’s a neat system, but it also has the propensity to mislead.

For example, the perception could be that a skin is sensitive, but it could in fact be sensitised? And what about dry skin, is it water dry or lipid dry? And is it really oily skin, or is it the skin trying to rebalance itself as a consequence of stripping or harsh ingredients?

You see it really isn’t as black and white as the industry and the brands would have you believe.

As Corneotherapists, we don’t put skin in boxes. We observe, we investigate and we ask why.

Each skin we meet is unique, so I urge us all to look beyond the types to the bigger picture, to identify what the skin needs in the here are and now.

That’s where skin expertise lies.

Skin types or skin needs? Which camp are you?

Let’s face it, this industry has been built around brands and their protocols.

Protocols have their place, they teach consistency and product application, but they are not a substitute for understanding skin, which is what Corneotherspy does so well.

When your decisions are driven by epidermal science rather than a prescribed routine, you begin to see each skin for what it is…unique.

You stop asking, “What’s the next step in the protocol?”

You start asking, “What does this skin need today?”

That shift changes the way you work and the way you think.

It develops critical thinking instead of dependency.

It builds confidence instead of compliance.

It creates practitioners who can question, adapt and justify every clinical decision they make.

The professionals who stand out are rarely those who follow the crowd.

My motto, be the black sheep. Be different.

Lead with knowledge, not brand protocols.

Do you think our industry is creating independent thinkers or brand followers?

GLASS SKIN IS NOT HEALTHY SKIN!

Glass skin originated in Korea, encouraging the adoption of multiple skincare steps (sometimes 12 or more) to create smooth, clear, translucent skin.

Whilst it could be considered a great marketing coup, as people lined up to buy an abundance of products, the practice could never be corneotherapuetic for many reasons, but primarily because it unnecessarily overworks the skin.

The skin may look and feel great initially, but not for long! As I’m sure all those influencers have since discovered.

Yet sadly that’s not the worst of it…

Glass skin has now been taken to a whole ‘other’ level and when corneotherapist’s see it, a little piece of us dies inside, because we know the truth.

There are Skin Therapists who are unashamedly using ablative and aggressive in-clinic treatments in combination to create so called glowing, smooth and healthy skin and to further enhance the fallacy, they slather on oil and shine a mag lamp over the top.

It’s all smoke and mirrors, and it’s just horrendous for the skin.

That bright red, glowing skin is not healthy skin it’s inflammation.

That shiny, smooth skin is not healthy skin either it’s an epidermis in crisis. Its natural defences wiped out in the name of vanity.

Believe me skin health is not achieved by forcing the skin into submission. It is achieved by understanding why the skin is misbehaving in the first place.

Corneotherapists care about skin and supporting its natural function is our priority.

So what are your thoughts on glass skin?

You can invest in every new technology and skincare brand on the market, but without knowledge, it means nothing.

Knowledge is your greatest power. It gives you confidence, authority and the ability to think critically about the skin in front of you.

When you invest in understanding why the skin behaves as it does, you elevate not just your results, but the standards of our entire industry.

Own your power!
