September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. 🧡

Today, we pause to honour the children who never returned home, Survivors of residential schools, and the families and communities whose lives continue to be impacted by their legacy.

Truth and reconciliation asks us to listen, learn, reflect, and take meaningful action.

At True Hearing Health, we recognize that listening means more than simply hearing words. It means making space for stories, understanding lived experiences, and continuing to learn.

Today and every day, we encourage our community to listen with intention, learn from Indigenous voices and perspectives, and reflect on our shared responsibility toward reconciliation.

🧡 Every child matters.

🍂 Pumpkin spice? Absolutely.
👂 Missing half the conversation? Not so much.

Fall is full of opportunities to get together: coffee with a friend, family dinners, weekend outings, football games, Thanksgiving gatherings and cozy evenings at home.
But if you’re frequently saying:

👂 “What did you say?”
👂 “Can you repeat that?”
👂 “I can’t hear you with all this background noise.”

…it may be more than just everyone talking at once.

Hearing loss can develop gradually, and many people don’t realize how much they’re missing until they have their hearing tested.

This fall, make time for the things that matter including hearing the people you love. ❤️

If it’s been a while since your last hearing assessment, we’re here to help.

“I don’t have a hearing problem…”
Except…

👂 You always turn on the TV captions.
👂 Restaurants are exhausting because you can’t follow the conversation.
👂 You hear someone talking, but you don’t always understand what they said.
👂 You ask people to repeat themselves.
👂 You hear much better when you can see their face.
👂 Your family says you’re not listening.
👂 You’ve started avoiding certain conversations or social situations because they’re just too difficult to follow.

Sometimes hearing loss doesn’t feel like “I can’t hear.” It feels like “Everyone else is mumbling.” Or “It’s just the background noise.” Or “I can hear fine when it’s quiet.”

And that’s exactly why hearing loss can be easy to overlook.

Research has found that many older adults with objectively measured hearing loss don’t recognize or report having a hearing problem.
So ask yourself:

Are you actually hearing easily… or have you simply gotten really good at compensating?

You don’t have to wait until hearing becomes a major problem to have it checked.

🎒 BACK TO SCHOOL: HEARING AID SUCCESS 101 — PART 2

Next lesson: Maintain them. 👂

Hearing aids aren’t a “set it and forget it” device.

Just like your hearing can change over time, your hearing aids may need cleaning, maintenance, troubleshooting or adjustments to keep working their best for you.

And there’s another important part of maintenance: keeping up with your hearing appointments.

Gradual hearing changes can be surprisingly easy to miss. You may not notice that you’re turning the TV up a little more, struggling a little more in restaurants, or asking people to repeat themselves more often.

Regular follow-up gives us the opportunity to:

✔️ Monitor changes in your hearing
✔️ Check that your hearing aids are working properly
✔️ Make adjustments when needed
✔️ Address comfort or sound concerns
✔️ Keep your hearing care plan up to date

Don’t wait until something feels wrong to check in.

Your hearing care should evolve with you.

🎒 BACK TO SCHOOL: HEARING AID SUCCESS 101 — PART 1

First lesson: Wear them. 👂

It can be tempting to think of hearing aids as something you only need for certain situations — dinner out, family gatherings, appointments, or when the TV is getting a little too loud.

But hearing doesn’t only happen in those moments.

Your day is full of conversations, sounds, connections and information. Wearing your hearing aids consistently gives you the opportunity to hear more of those moments with less effort.

And if you’re finding yourself leaving your hearing aids in the drawer more often than in your ears, that’s worth talking about.

Are they uncomfortable?
Does the sound seem too loud or unnatural?
Are you having trouble putting them in?
Do you feel like they’re not helping?
Don’t just stop wearing them — let us help you figure out why.

Your hearing aids are great at helping you hear… but only when you wear them.

Did you know your hearing may be connected to more than just your ability to hear? 👂🧠⚖️

Your ears and brain work together every time you listen.

When hearing becomes more difficult, your brain has to work harder to detect, process and understand sounds, especially in challenging environments like restaurants, family gatherings or group conversations.
And research has found connections between hearing loss and other aspects of health, including balance, mobility and cognitive health.

Hearing is part of how you connect with the people and world around you—and taking care of your hearing is one piece of taking care of your overall health.

When was your last hearing assessment?

🫀 Did you know your heart health and hearing health are closely connected?

We’re kicking off a health & hearing series by exploring some common conditions that can affect the tiny blood, blood vessels and nerves responsible for hearing: diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease.

Many people are surprised to learn that the same habits that help protect your heart can also help protect your hearing. Understanding these connections is one more step toward maintaining your overall health and staying connected to the people and moments that matter most.

Over the next few days, we’ll continue exploring how different health conditions can impact hearing. Next up: autoimmune conditions and how inflammation and the immune system can sometimes affect the ears.

Have questions about your hearing? We’re here to help.
