Round 2 of Mythbusting with a Science Degree, and it's a myth I believed myself.

It sticks because bloating is so common. When it seems like everyone has it, nobody thinks to question it. It just gets added to the list of things that come with age.

Looking back, my bloating was one of the signs of how much my gut was struggling, and how much of my food wasn't being absorbed.

So, what did you guess before you swiped? Tell me true or false.

I keep this one simple on purpose, because inflammation is a word that gets thrown around until it stops meaning anything.

The short version: some inflammation is your body taking care of you. The kind that hangs around is worth a second look, especially when it shows up as something you've quietly decided to live with.

This is education, not a diagnosis. If something in your body has been puffy, achy or off for a long time, that's worth raising with your doctor.

Save this for the next time someone tells you it's just your age.

It is the science part people skip past. That degree is where I got the habit of going and finding the research instead of taking somebody's word for it, and it is most of the reason I am skeptical about what gets said in the media about food and nutrition.

That habit is why I spent years researching supplement ingredients, minerals and vitamins, long before any of this became my business. I find it fascinating how quickly food science has expanded what we know.

It is also why I am hard to sell to. When somebody makes a large statement about food, or about how it is raised, I can usually tell whether they have done the reading or whether they have picked up the common myth and repeated it.

So when I do put my name on something, it is because I went and checked it myself first.

I understand the appeal of a short window. It has an end date and it does not ask much of you.

The trouble is what a ten day frame does to your thinking. You end up judging everything against a timeline somebody in marketing chose, and putting things down before they have had a chance to tell you anything at all.

If a woman tells me she wants to try something for ten days, I am not going to argue with her. I would far rather she started. I am simply going to tell her up front that ten days is not where she will find out, so she does not decide later that it failed her.

Tell me the longest you have ever stayed with something for yourself. I am curious where the real number sits.

Ease and VitalBiome, first thing in the morning. Ease is for inflammation, and my ankles are why I take it seriously. VitalBiome is my chill pill, the brain gut connection piece.

Slim and Restore, mid morning. My purple drink. Slim is for blood sugar, and my sugar cravings have significantly decreased since. Restore is my daily antioxidant, the thing that helps my cells hold up to a full, busy life. I mix them together so the two things I want to stay consistent with actually happen.

XFactor+ with lunch, filling in the nutrient gaps. Then ProBio CA and Bio Cleanse at night. ProBio is the gut one and the sugar cravings one, the piece that got my attention in the first place. Bio Cleanse goes with it because you cannot make room for the good without moving the old out first.

That is the whole thing. What I would like you to notice is how short the list is compared to where I came from, which was a naturopath and a cupboard of separate bottles that never quite added up to a system. Ask me what any of these actually do. That is my favourite question to get.

10/12/2026

She would not have listened. She was capable and she was busy and she had a system for getting through a day that mostly worked, and somebody telling her that her tiredness was worth investigating would have sounded like one more job on a list that was already too long.

I would tell her anyway. That feeling foggy most afternoons is not a personality trait. That the reason she can eat carefully and still feel dreadful is worth finding out, and that finding out will take longer than she would like it to.

The thing I would actually make her go and check is her bones. That did not come up until many years later, and by the time it did I had lost two inches and a simple back stretch had crumbled vertebrae in my lower back.

She would nod politely and go put a load of laundry on. I would have said it regardless.

Food science has moved a long way since I sat in those classrooms. Vitamins have been identified that we did not know were there. Things I wrote down as settled turned out to be a stage in somebody's thinking rather than the end of it.

I could have taken that personally. Plenty of people do. They pick the version of the facts they were taught and defend it for the rest of their lives, and you can watch it happen underneath any nutrition post on the internet.

What it did to me instead was make me suspicious of confidence. When somebody tells me how our food is raised, or what a nutrient does, or what a study proved, my first thought now is whether they have actually read it or whether they are repeating the common myth. Usually it is the second one.

That is why I read labels rather than headlines. I have already been confidently wrong once, with a piece of paper on the wall saying I was not. If you know a woman who has been told something about food with a great deal of confidence lately, send this to her.

This is the least glamorous thing I talk about and it is the one I would keep if I could only keep one.

I want to be clear about what I had wrong, because I had it wrong for a long time. I did not have a slow gut. Things moved through on a perfectly normal schedule, and I used that as my evidence that everything down there was fine.

Meanwhile I was eating carefully, spending money on supplements, and quietly wondering why none of it seemed to land anywhere. The answer turned up in front of me every corn season and I read it as a funny quirk instead of information.

Nobody tells you what normal is meant to look like here, and it is not a thing you bring up over coffee. So you assume yours is fine. Mine looked fine. That turned out not to be the same thing.

The part worth talking about is not the craving itself. It is what a woman ends up deciding about herself because of it.

I spent a long time treating my sugar cravings as a fixed feature of who I was. Something to be handled with effort, or willpower, or eating even less than I already was. None of that touched them.

What did touch them was going after the things underneath, the gut and the blood sugar, which I had been ignoring the whole time I was busy adjusting what went on my plate.

If you are currently in a fight with yourself about this, I would like you to consider that you may be losing an argument that was never really yours to win.

I understand exactly why a short plan appeals. It has an end date. You can see the far side of it, and there is something comforting about a thing that will be over soon whether it works or not.

Six months is a different sort of ask. You have to decide you are worth a longer bet, and a lot of the women I talk to have not made that decision about themselves in a very long time.

I am not asking you to spend more. I am asking you to stop adding pieces and give one thing long enough to actually tell you something. If you have been collecting solutions for years, that is the conversation I would like to have with you.
