When you’re preparing for IVF, it can be tempting to think about acupuncture as something you add once the injections begin—or perhaps just before an embryo transfer. But there can be value in starting earlier.
Dr. Kim Juneja often thinks about it as preparing the soil before planting the seed. Rather than waiting until the IVF cycle is underway, acupuncture can be part of creating a foundation of support in the months leading up to treatment.
For many patients, Dr. Juneja recommends considering acupuncture three to four months before starting IVF, when possible. This gives time to work with your individual health picture rather than focusing solely on the IVF cycle itself.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the whole person is considered. Treatment may focus on menstrual health, digestion, sleep, stress, energy and nervous system regulation, as well as supporting overall reproductive health. It also gives time to establish a treatment rhythm and make adjustments based on how your body responds.
Acupuncture isn't a replacement for fertility treatment—and there are no guarantees for a successful IVF cycle. However, starting treatments early can provide an opportunity to support your health and wellbeing throughout what can be a physically and emotionally demanding process.
If IVF is on your horizon, you don't necessarily have to wait until the cycle begins. Starting a few months earlier may give you more time to prepare, receive support and work toward your treatment goals.
