Osteopathy is safe and effective during pregnancy when performed by a qualified, trained practitioner who adapts their techniques for expectant mothers.

How Osteopathy Helps During Pregnancy 🤰🏼

• Pain Relief: Eases lower back pain, pelvic girdle pain, and sciatica caused by shifting weight and posture.

• Joint and Ligament Support: Supports joints and ligaments as the body shifts to accommodate the many changes that occur throughout pregnancy.

• Digestive Comfort: Relieves pressure on the diaphragm and internal organs to help reduce heartburn, acid reflux (GERD), and constipation.

• Circulation and Swelling: Improves blood flow and lymphatic drainage to minimize fluid retention and leg swelling (edema).

• Labor Preparation: Promotes optimal pelvic alignment and tissue flexibility, which can support a smoother delivery.

🍂 Don’t let cooler weather stiffen your joints!

As the autumn crispness sets in, it’s common to feel a bit more ache in your knees, hips, and hands. 🚶🏽🚶🏻‍♀️But staying active is actually one of the best ways to keep joint pain at bay.

Movement keeps your joints lubricated, strengthens the surrounding muscles, and reduces overall stiffness. You don't need an intense workout to reap the benefits—gentle, consistent movement is the key.

Here are a few joint-friendly ways to stay active this fall:
• brisk autumn walks: bundle up and enjoy the fall foliage while keeping your lower body moving.
• low-impact indoor cycling: great for building knee strength without the harsh impact of pavement.
• water aerobics: if you have access to a heated indoor pool, the warm water can be soothing for achy joints.
• mindful stretching & yoga: focuses on flexibility and mobility to relieve tension built up from the cold.

Remember to take a few extra minutes to warm up before you start, as cold muscles and joints need a little more time to prep. Listen to your body, modify when you need to, and keep moving! 🍁

Osteopathy can help get you moving!

Osteopathy Helped Nathan Regain Quality of Life Following a Head Injury

Nathan's Story

"Osteopathic treatments have changed my life!

I was first introduced to osteopathy through word of mouth following a head injury with subsequent issues. I tried every other treatment available in North America, including some of the leading neurologists in the US, and made no progress on my issues from my brain injury. After one treatment with my Osteopathic Practitioner, I knew that this treatment was different and that I could make progress.

I went from only being functional for a few hours a day to becoming an extremely high-functioning entrepreneur, father, coach and volunteer.

Almost every issue I faced from my head injury is resolved and the few minor issues that are left I am able to manage through treatment. I have seen incredible changes to my health and well-being and will continue with osteopathy for as long as the qualified practitioners in my area continue to practice."

Osteopathy Helped Devon Recover From Concussive Symptoms

Devon’s Story

“My experience with Osteopathic treatment has been incredible!

In the beginning I had no major concerns or issues, but recently I had multiple concussions. These concussions led to a lot of neck, lower back issues, headaches as well as a lot of fear of never getting better. This was an extremely scary period in my life, unsure of what to do or how to do it.

Osteopathy helped with whiplash and dizzy spells caused by my concussion. It also helped me with the lower back issues and just general wellness.

My experience with Osteopathic treatment has been very peaceful and gentle, it is something I trusted to help me with my concussions and the fear of someone treating my body. After every appointment I feel incredible! It’s not instant at times, but it has helped me tremendously.”

Healing the Hidden Injury: Osteopathy and Concussion Recovery - Former NHL Goalie Nathan Lieuwen Shares His Journey

Nathan Lieuwen grew up in Abbotsford with a singular passion: hockey. His talent in net carried him from the junior leagues to the NHL where he played as a goaltender for the Buffalo Sabres. His trajectory was steep, promising, and built on years of dedication.

Between the ages of 22 and 26, Lieuwen suffered multiple concussions that left him with debilitating symptoms:
- persistent headaches
- brain fog, and
- a lasting impact on his peripheral vision.

Despite his determination to continue playing, post-concussion symptoms made it impossible for him to perform at the elite level required of an NHL goaltender. At 26 years old, he made the difficult decision to retire.

He recalls: “I saw other players struggling from the impact of multiple concussions. Some battled depression. Some talked about su***de. It was a dark place for them to be in pain and no one could tell them what’s wrong.”

Buffalo Sabres management did everything they could to help Lieuwen. He was evaluated by leading neurologists, surgeons, and optometrists across the United States. Despite extensive testing, no specialist could pinpoint the cause of his symptoms or offer a path forward.

Returning to his family home in the BC Interior, Lieuwen heard about osteopathy as a treatment option. With little left to try, he booked an appointment with a local osteopathic practitioner.

The impact was immediate.

“After one treatment, I knew this was different. Most of all, she gave me hope,” he said.

Over time, his post-concussion symptoms eased. His energy returned. His vision improved. He regained the ability to function fully: at first for a few hours a day, then steadily more.

Today, nearly every issue stemming from the concussions has been resolved. The few minor ones that remain are manageable with ongoing osteopathic care.

Seven years after his first osteopathic treatment, Lieuwen is thriving. He and his wife Breanne own a junior hockey team - the Cranbrook Bucks - where he mentors young athletes and remains deeply connected to the sport he loves.

“I love what I do every day. I’m an entrepreneur, a coach, a volunteer, and I have an amazing family. Osteopathic treatments changed my life!”

Lieuwen hopes his story will encourage others - athletes and non-athletes - to explore osteopathic treatment if they’re experiencing persistent symptoms after a head injury.

He adds: “I’ve had incredible changes to my health and well-being because of osteopathy. I hope others will consider seeing a qualified osteopathic practitioner. It might give them the hope and the progress that they’ve been searching for.”

September 27 to October 3 is BC Concussion Awareness Week proclaimed by the Government of British Columbia in collaboration with BC Injury Research & Prevention Unit and supported by Concussion Awareness Training Tool - CATT and Sport Information Resource Centre (SIRC)

This annual campaign raises awareness of how to recognize a potential concussion, manage symptoms through a gradual return to activity, and avoid long-term consequences.

Osteopathic treatment can help with concussion recovery. Osteopathy is a safe and effective healthcare treatment which focuses on achieving a state of balance among all the systems of the body, a balance that is required to maintain optimal health.

An Osteopathic Practitioner will assess the whole body as a unit, not just the area that is causing symptoms.

Osteopathy can be used to treat a specific issue, or as a preventive health measure. Many health problems can be addressed including sports injuries, concussions, injuries from car accidents, and more.

Osteopathy is drug and surgery free.

This week, we’ll share stories of patients with concussions who have benefited from osteopathic care.
