In this Arthritis At Home, we are sharing this year’s with Dr. Mollie Carruthers, Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division Rheumatology at the University of British Columbia.

Dr. Carruthers discusses her collaborative workshop at this year’s meeting where she and her colleague share the progress that has been made in identifying, diagnosing, and treating IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD). It is difficult to diagnose IgG4-RD as many symptoms mimic other diseases, and it is a very rare disease. She stresses the importance of having champions for IgG4-RD across different areas of Canada so that we can hear from others who have expertise and experience with IgG4-RD.

Dans cette capsule de « À la maison avec l’arthrite », nous revenons sur l’édition de cette année de en compagnie de la Dre Mollie Carruthers, professeure adjointe clinique au sein de la division de rhumatologie de l’Université de la Colombie-Britannique.

La Dre Carruthers évoque l’atelier collaboratif qu’elle a animé lors du congrès de cette année, au cours duquel elle et son collègue ont fait le point sur les avancées réalisées en matière d’identification, de diagnostic et de traitement de la maladie liée aux IgG4 (ML-IgG4). Le diagnostic de cette pathologie est complexe, car bon nombre de ses symptômes imitent ceux d’autres maladies ; il s’agit, par ailleurs, d’une affection très rare. La Dre Carruthers souligne l’importance de disposer, dans différentes régions du Canada, de spécialistes référents pour la ML-IgG4, afin de favoriser les échanges avec d’autres experts possédant une expérience concrète de cette maladie.

On we are calling attention to an issue that affects access to affordable medicines: the impact of pharmaceutical patent practices on patients. For people living with arthritis and other chronic diseases, timely access to affordable treatment can make a life-changing difference.

Yet some patent manipulation practices can delay (sometimes for years) competition from lower-cost medicines, including biosimilars, keeping healthcare costs higher for patients and health systems.

Through the Patients and Patents campaign, Arthritis Consumer Experts is working with patient organizations around the world to build awareness, strengthen patient advocacy and promote a more balanced pharmaceutical patent system.

Pharmaceutical nnovation matters. So does affordable access to medicines. Patients need both.

In this interview, we are sharing the with Dr. Liam O'Neil, Assistant Professor of internal medicine at the Max Rady College of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. Dr. O'Neil highlights key points from his workshop and presentation at this year’s meeting. His workshop, titled “CRA/CanRIO Living Guidelines for the Management of Baseline Immunosuppression for Pre-existing Rheumatic Diseases”, looks at the fine balance between immunosuppressant medications in rheumatic disease and immune checkpoint inhibitors drugs in cancer treatment which stimulates the immune system.

Dans cette capsule de « À la maison avec l’arthrite », nous vous présentons l’entrevue menée auprès du Dr Liam O’Neil, professeur adjoint de médecine interne au Collège de médecine Max Rady de l’Université du Manitoba. Le Dr O’Neil revient sur les points clés de son atelier et de sa présentation lors de l’Assemblée de cette année. Son atelier, intitulé « Lignes directrices évolutives de la SCR/CanRIO pour la prise en charge de l’immunosuppression de base chez les personnes atteintes d’une maladie rhumatismale préexistante », examine le délicat équilibre entre les médicaments immunosuppresseurs utilisés pour traiter les maladies rhumatismales et les inhibiteurs de points de contrôle immunitaires utilisés pour traiter le cancer, qui stimulent le système immunitaire.
