Violence occurs on the Individual + Universal levels of consciousness. If we blame individuals for acts of violence but do nothing to interrupt the larger more accepted culture of domination, entitlement and authoritative power then we will continue to perpetuate the conditions that sustain violence on the individual level.

I wrote a piece on how I've been navigating burnout from community organizing over the past few years.

I hope you'll take a few minutes to read it over on Substack. If not consider even just copying the link to help me boost my reach!

What wisdom do you already hold around transitions, transformation and liminal "in-between" space or spaces that are in active emergence?

Only 7 tickets left!

Have you been feeling burnt out lately? This summer, we are making space for Black mental well-being.

Step away from the noise and join us this Sunday for a silent walking meditation: a gentle practice of presence, grounding, and mental restoration.

This is a gentle invitation to slow down, awaken your senses, and connect deeply with the natural world.

Together, we’ll move mindfully through nature, creating space for grounding, reflection, rest, and renewal.

Afterwards join us after for light snacks, laughter & chill vibes at a community-rooted hang.

By donation. RVSP link in bio.

So many people reached out to me about having similar struggles in their in*******al and heterosexual relationships. Learning how we navigate power imbalances while also protecting our connection to another person isn't easy work.

When my mom got married to my dad in the 1970s, it was a very radical thing for this white woman to marry a black man. She often reminds me of a time she was at Kitsilano beach with him and people walked by and spat on her calling her a "n-word lover" - she also faced real risk like physical and psychological violence for loving my dad. So I don't blame them for never having capacity to work through the nitty gritty of power imbalances. They also had to work through many other struggles, my dad was living with undiagnosed schizophrenia at the time, and sometimes physically abused her.
So i didn't grow up watching them work through things, i grew up learning how to survive. Which means i have made a lot of mistakes in my own relationships because i was going in without a blue print on how to relate to others beyond survival. I knew it was okay to be in in*******al relationships but i was ill prepared to actually navigate the nuance of them, and I wasn't able to accurate name power imbalances or how they showed up or what my responsibilities within them was.
These are some of the lessons from failed relationships Ive had time to reflect on.

Not every relationship that we have requires that we share the exact same understanding and capacity. It is true that sometimes limitations in capacity can equate the limitations in the depth that our relationship can go in terms of intimate partnerships and close relations.

But in terms of community building and coalition building learning how to work with people who may be at a different capacity or level of understanding than you can be the vital difference between an organized process thriving or collapsing .

I'm excited to announce a new workshop that is aimed at supporting people who are "bad at meditation" at developing skills that help them feel grounded and stable in these destabilizing times.

As someone who lives with ADHD I always believed that I was just terrible at meditation. When I first discovered these techniques 20 years ago, it was life-changing for me, suddenly, I had a way to settle all of the noise in my mind and all of the noise of the world, and I was able to anchor into a peace of my own making. These tools became my survival techniques, and although I did not come up with them (they are over 5000 years old) I have felt deeply grateful to have had time to master them and to be able to share them as a Grandmaster Yoga Teacher over the past decade.

I will be teaching them every Friday at 6:30 PM from April 3 until May 8, we will be learning in small, digestible, bite-sized pieces that participants will be able to sustain even after the series. Join me! Click the link into my bio to register today.
