Hello September!! Welcoming the new month with a morning flow…as we move towards fall - and the new moon on Monday - it’s a great time to reflect inward and set intentions. What’s cooking? Rainy day’s are perfect for cooking up something delicious. Today was a simple bolognese sauce, spiced up by slow roasting cherry tomatoes, garlic, fresh basil and olive oil before blending as my sauce base. Tasty, simple and my house smells amazing!!

How do we open ourselves to creativity when we are conditioned for productivity?

As humans we are blessed with two sides of our brain - one that allows for intellectual development, the other creative, yet most of what we celebrate in society is of the right side.

These are things like productivity, doing more and having more. If health and healing naturally occur when the body and mind are in a state of balance, what will be the cost if we continue to focus only on these aspects of our development? I fear the further we move away from our natural state, the sicker we will become as a whole.

In our most recent episode of SoulNet Podcast, we explore some of the limitations we have around creativity, how chaos can invite in some of our most creative moments - should we allow ourselves the time to explore them - as well as practical tips to help open to the creativity within you.

In honour of world meditation day I thought I would share a bit of how meditation changed my life and health.

When my hair loss began many, many years ago, I also had a number of other things going on within my physical body. As I moved through this health crisis, I made changes to reduce stress and explored a number of treatments for healing and my physical body slowly came back on board.

The deeper struggles that I faced over the years were in my mental health as I tried to find love and acceptance of myself without hair as a woman in the world. The journey hasn’t been easy and I’d experienced rejection and ridicule from others deepening my feelings of low self worth.

I’d dabbled with meditation practises over those years, mostly guided, and honestly, never seemed to have much success. Upon reflection, I recognize my level of commitment may have played a part, although I tried to do it regularly, it never seemed to stick.

Flash forward to about 5 years ago when I signed up with the Chopra Foundation to study Ayurveda. A prerequisite to our coursework, and becoming a teacher, was adopting a consistent meditation practice. It was a different style than I’d ever tried before, something called a primordial sound meditation, which utilizes a personal mantra to drop in and help still the mind. Well, through the tutelage of the amazing instructors that I had during my Chopra journey as well as a personal commitment to doing the work, meditation began to slowly change my life.

In ways that movement and nutrition of offered me a strong and limber physique, meditation has allowed me to meet myself without judgment, with curiosity, with acceptance, not only of the lighter sides of myself, but also the deep shadows and the wounds that I’ve worked through from my childhood years . This process has gently allowed these traumas to come forward like unravelling the layers of an onion, one at a time, rarely asking me to go deeper than I have the capacity for, yet over time I have found myself deeper and deeper into these aspects of myself that I had hidden away, not only from myself, but from others.

I may never have a full head of hair again, and I’ve made peace with that
as well as with myself. I am ever grateful for the practice and my journey with Chopra.

The benefits of Meditation, like movement don’t show up in quick fixes, although many of us notice subtle changes quickly, the real magic happens over time.

If you are struggling with mental health or physical health issues, I can’t say enough about embarking on a consistent meditation practice. As with any of these practices, make sure you’re ready to carve out the time and consistency to allow the practice to do what it will organically do for you .

I’m not sure who needs to hear this today, but healing takes time. Whether it’s an injury or virus, heartache, loss or spiritual crisis it’s going to take some time.

I know it’s hard, I’ve had my own experiences with illness and mental health challenges as well as worked with hundreds of clients as a coach, guiding others as they rehab their injuries or move through emotional wounds that run deep.

Despite what some may tell you, this isn’t something you can hack into or bypass as much as you may want to. Real healing takes time and it’s important to offer up space and patience as we allow ourselves to move through it.

Take actions where you can in the way of mind-body practices that invite in healing and meet yourself with awareness, kindness and compassion. Every day.

Do you ever look back and realize that it’s been a long time since you’ve done something you used to love and wonder why you ever stopped?

Transformation happens over time.

I talk a lot about consistency (cause it matters) but what about allowing vs forcing?

I would be classified as competitive by nature - literally for those of us with primarily Pitta Doshas, we can be full of fire - stepping out of classroom and developing a yoga practice on my own has been by far the most transformational than any of the hours of group practices I used to do.

Instead of competing with others or the image in the mirror, I have moved to allowing my body to open over time. By letting go of my own expectations to be in a certain pose, I have suddenly found myself in them. No force, instead allowing and arriving there as my mind and body are ready.

Today’s reminder is to keep going, let go and before you know it you’ll be exactly where you wanted to be.
