Join the Conversation at the 19th Annual ICAA Wellness Think Tank for multi-location senior living organizations, November 18, 2024, in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Wellness in senior living has traditionally been viewed as a revenue-neutral service. This interactive think tank aims to challenge that perspective by exploring how wellness can be transformed into a thriving business model.
We will develop frameworks for innovative models, whether large or small communities, that not only drive revenue but also build goodwill among residents and the broader community. These models might include:
-Opening your community’s wellness center, spa, restaurant or café, and grounds to the public.
-Developing a program and amenity-rich resident membership model.
-Extending wellness services beyond the campus, both online and in-person.
-Explore a wellness hub and spoke model.
No matter which models are explored, created and implemented, ensuring their profitability is crucial for sustainable growth and ongoing development.
Limited number of spots available.

Imagine this: A manager decides to introduce a new wellness program in a life plan community or active living center. It promises to improve resident/member engagement and satisfaction and seems a great idea—but the manager bases the program on outdated assumptions about what people want and need. Decisions based on limited, incomplete or, worse, incorrect information can lead to unintended, often consequential, outcomes. Programming does not connect with residents/members. Staff are not adequately trained to deliver the program. And spaces and environments do not align with the activities planned. The result? A well-intentioned initiative fails to meet its goals, leaving everyone frustrated.
An uninformed decision is costly in other ways. Return on investment (ROI) becomes elusive when a decision on key performance indicators (KPIs) is made without conducting the proper research.
In contrast, informed decisions contribute to fostering a community or center that’s relevant, vibrant and thriving. Organizations may monitor and manage their programs and services with a previously unattainable precision. And, when a manager chooses the right tools and employs personnel with the expertise to leverage available data, the results can be transformative.

Hydration can also be important for healthy aging. A 2023 US National Institutes of Health study published in The Lancet documents adults who are well-hydrated may be healthier, develop fewer chronic conditions (like heart and lung disease), and live longer versus those who are not getting sufficient fluids. One study author commented “The results suggest that proper hydration may slow down aging and prolong a disease-free life.”

July 23, 2024 webinar. Balance; Fewer Falls: A research-based program to help older adults stay upright, with Kymberly Williams-Evans, PhD (ABD).
Time: 9:00 AM PST, 11:00 AM CST, Noon EST.
Whether you work with retirement community members, workout groups, or one-on-one clients, you can design effective, science-based, cutting-edge balance workouts. As baby boomers age, they become increasingly interested in maintaining balance. Their fear of falling has either been realized or they anticipate falling based on their parents’ or friends’ experiences. Older adults want to ford streams when hiking, climb stairs abroad where no railings exist, and recover quickly if they do fall. In short, they want the freedom to move, walk, and balance with confidence and a spring in their step.
This webinar will support you in:
- Creating and tailoring workouts for your residents, clients, or class members concerned with balance and fall risk.
- Addressing a significant and important group that is largely untapped.
- Mixing and matching program elements to create relevant sessions, whether for individual participants or group classes.
- Offering balance-related movement tasks that are effective and scientifically proven.

'Wake-up call': third of adults not doing enough physical activity according to the latest report from WHO
Nearly a third of all adults are not doing enough physical activity, posing a growing threat to health across the world, a major study said on Wednesday.
In my interview with Best Selling author Maddy Dychtwald, we explore the concept of "ageless aging," which focuses on extending the number of healthy years in one's life rather than merely increasing lifespan.
Dychtwald emphasizes the importance of social connections, a positive attitude towards aging, and practical steps to enhance health span and brain span. She critiques the extreme practices of biohackers and highlights more balanced approaches, such as moderate intermittent fasting and maintaining quality sleep, especially for women.
