Your weight can stay the same.

Your body can still change: less muscle, especially in your arms and legs, more fat around your organs, lower bone density. A scale won’t show any of it, but it shapes how strong, energetic and independent you stay as you age.

At Evolving Health in Vancouver, our DEXA scan measures all three and places each result on reference curves for your age and s*x. Every report is reviewed by our physician and comes with an evidence-based roadmap you can act on. Repeat the scan and you can measure what’s changed.

To book a DEXA scan, comment DEXA and we’ll message you what to expect and how to get started, or use the link in our bio. HSA eligible.

A number on a scale doesn’t tell you much.

A DEXA scan shows what that number is made of: visceral fat, lean muscle and bone.

Every one of our DEXA reports places your results, including ALMI (arm and leg muscle relative to your height), on reference curves for your age and s*x, and every result is interpreted by a physician. Repeat the scan and you can see which way you’re heading.

Do you know your ALMI?

Comment DEXA and we’ll message you how the scan works, what’s in the report and how to book.

You should not wait until something feels wrong to look closely at your health.

The earlier you measure, the more you can influence.

We make the process clear: sophisticated assessment, clinical context, and a practical way forward.

You cannot change your age. You cannot rewrite your genetics. But you can improve one of the strongest predictors of your long-term health.

VO₂ max is not just a measure of athletic performance. It reflects how effectively your heart, lungs, blood vessels and muscles work together when demand is highest.

Across 199 cohort studies and more than 20 million observations, lower cardiorespiratory fitness was consistently associated with a higher risk of early death and chronic disease.

The purpose of measuring it is not to collect another score. It is to establish a baseline, understand where you stand and improve with intention.

Know the number. Build the number. Measure it again.

Grip strength is one of the simplest measurements we take—and one of the most revealing.

It is not a test of your hand. It is a useful window into overall strength, physical function, and the reserve you have for the demands of life.

We use it because healthspan is practical: carrying what matters, lifting yourself up, recovering from illness, travelling well, and staying capable as the years add up.

A single grip score does not define your health. But measured alongside body composition, aerobic fitness, balance, and movement, it helps show the bigger picture.

Because capability is worth measuring.

The danger of an estimate isn’t that it’s always wrong. It’s that you don’t know when it is.

Your watch is useful for tracking trends. But the VO₂max on your wrist is still an algorithmic estimate—not a direct measurement of how much oxygen your body can use during exercise.

Why does that matter?

Cardiorespiratory fitness is one of the strongest markers of long-term health. If your watch places you in a higher fitness category than direct testing would, it may reassure you when your aerobic fitness actually needs attention.

A laboratory VO₂ test directly measures oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production throughout a graded exercise test. It shows you where you stand and establishes a defensible baseline for improvement.

Use the watch. Follow the trend. But when a number matters this much, an estimate isn’t enough.

This might be unpopular, but it isn’t an opinion.

When it comes to cancer risk, there is no safe amount of alcohol.

The risk does not begin only after years of heavy drinking or after you cross some defined threshold. For some cancers, it increases even at low levels of intake.

Alcohol is a known carcinogen linked to at least seven types of cancer, including breast and colorectal cancer, not only liver cancer.

That does not mean every drink carries a large risk. It means the risk is not zero. The more alcohol you drink, the greater that risk becomes.

I’m not telling you what to do. But an informed decision requires you to understand the risks.

For cancer risk, less is better. None is best.

When you’re measuring physiology, workload matters.

For cycle VO₂ testing, the bike isn’t simply something to pedal. We need to know the workload being produced as the test progresses so we can interpret the physiological response alongside it.

We use Velotron cycle ergometers for our bike-based VO₂ and lactate assessments. Their accuracy has been evaluated in peer-reviewed research, and they are paired with our ParvoMedics TrueOne metabolic cart—a system used in high-performance and research settings, including Olympic Training Centers and NASA.

But, as with any piece of testing equipment, the hardware is only part of the picture. Calibration, protocol selection, testing setup, and the training and experience of the exercise physiologist conducting the assessment all matter.

The aim is to achieve a true maximal effort within a carefully controlled protocol, producing physiological data that are robust, interpretable, and genuinely useful.

Cardiorespiratory fitness is one of the most important health measures most people never measure.

We routinely know our cholesterol and blood pressure. Yet most people have no idea where their cardiorespiratory fitness stands.

That matters. Cardiorespiratory fitness is strongly and consistently associated with long-term health outcomes and adds meaningful information beyond many traditional cardiovascular risk factors. The American Heart Association has argued that it deserves consideration as a clinical vital sign.

It reflects how effectively the cardiovascular, respiratory and muscular systems work together when demand rises.

A laboratory VO₂ assessment gives us a direct way to measure that capacity — and establishes a baseline that can be tracked and improved over time.

You don’t need to be an athlete to want to know this.

Know where you are. Then decide what to do with it.

VO₂ assessments are HSA-eligible — details are in our HSA FAQ, linked in bio.
