Re-framing Re-treat for yourself
In spiritual communities there’s a trend of going away on a retreat. The facilitators are offering activities and guidance, meals are prepared and participants can sign up for different activities and treatments. They are often held in beautiful environments or even on the beaches of warm climate countries.
Is this really what retreat is? And if you can not afford this type of a retreat, are you missing out?
Every one of us is different, and knowing yourself and listening to our own body is the most important guidepost in selecting retreat options. Perhaps it is the best option for you and your body thrives in the presence of other women, under guidance of trusted healers.
However, if you are like me, and best heal by being in solitude, those kinds of retreats can feel threatening to your body. It is important to acknowledge that what our mind thinks it wants versus what our bodies truly need are not the same.
Seeing photographs online that are curated to evoke a certain ambience and feeling may cause you to feel like this is the best for you and you do need it. And that is great, if this really is a true call of your soul. But before you believe that the retreat happens always in such a way and get attached to the image, there are few things you can ask yourself.
First, why do I need a retreat?
What am going away from or what am I longing to come back to?
The photograph that captured your attention may show a certain vibration that your body longs for.
Candles, warm light, soft colours- if you feel drawn to them, perhaps your body is asking you to slow down, be gentle and kind to yourself? Move with more peace and softness? Go to bed early and sleep longer?
Warm beach, dances, flowers - if those images pull at your soul, perhaps you are missing the fun and stimulation in your life? Maybe your body really is calling you to be silly, less serious, more playful? Bring some colour into your wardrobe, into your home?
Nature scenes, mountains, vast skies, trees and forests- your body maybe asking you to breathe deeper, stretch, do less, allow for times without technology so you can feel clarity?
Our bodies and minds are closely connected and when the body is out of alignment, it creates a desire in our mind to compensate for what we have been depriving ourselves.
Maybe retreat is not about going away to another country or expensive resort? Maybe you don’t need other people’s approval to give yourself what your body has been asking for, and maybe even begging and screaming for it?
This Thanksgiving weekend I would like to invite you to take the opportunity and give thanks to yourself, to your body. To acknowledge its needs and change the harsh way you move throughout the day.
Rest more, do less.
Smile gently to your organs, to your body. Lay hands on your belly and send love to your organs.
Breathe in the fresh, autumn air and yes, you are allowed to stop during your walk and hug this tree that called you! You are allowed to even kiss it and give it thanks.
Feed your body with nourishing foods and give yourself the ultimate gift of a presence. Be present with yourself, with your needs, with your feelings.
Ultimately, maybe that is what retreat really is? Re-treat yourself. Treat yourself in a different, more soft and gentle way. Sometimes, to really retreat yourself, we need solitude and silence. We need to do less and simply just be with ourselves to hear that quiet voice that whispers and learn to listen to it again.
Everyone seems to know better what is best for you: experts explain what is happening in your body and how to fix it. What about just asking your body and tuning in to listen?
