Dr. Kate Ferguson, ND Women's Health Naturopathic Doctor
Founder of the PCOS Confidence Code

I am a licensed Naturopathic Doctor with a passion for empowering others to achieve optimal health and wellness. It was through my own health struggles that I discovered naturopathic medicine, and appreciated it for not applying a temporary solution to my symptoms, but rather addressing the root cause of my concerns. It is my vision to help others achieve their health goals through treating them as a whole person and catering to their unique needs. My practice has a special focus on hormonal health, PCOS, women’s health, fertility, stress management, weight management, anxiety, athletic performance, and digestive concerns. As a personal trainer, yoga teacher, and former varsity athlete I value the importance of physical activity in supporting the mind-body connection, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I often incorporate mindfulness-based practices, and personalized exercise plans into treatment plans, to effectively treat the whole individual. Please feel free to reach out with any questions you may have or book a complimentary 15 minute meet- and -greet to find out more about how I can help you!

This is one of the questions I get asked most, so let’s talk about it honestly. Iron infusions aren’t risk-free (no treatment is), but the risks are usually much smaller than people expect, and we always need to weigh the risks against the benefits, and the risks compared to oral iron.
Iron infusions aren’t scary, they can be life changing for the right person.

Putting this here for those that need to know:

Yes, I prescribe MHT, you absolutely do not have to wait until your periods stop to talk about it, and it’s never the entire treatment plan.

If your sleep, mood, cycles, hot flashes, joints or generally your ability to feel like yourself have changed in your 40s, perimenopause deserves to be part of the conversation.

Sometimes MHT is appropriate, and sometimes there are other things that we might want to explore first. I want to look at the whole picture and build the strategy around you.

If you want to throughly explore your options for perimenopause and menopause, you can book a 1:1 consultation through the link in my bio. 🤍

Weight loss can help some women with PMOS/PCOS, but “just lose weight” is a horrible treatment plan. It’s like saying “just lower your blood pressure”.

PMOS changes how we feel, so “just losing weight” can feel impossible next to chronic fatigue, cravings, low energy to exercise, and sleepless nights.

When it comes to a treatment plan, we need to figure out which area needs the most support and what behaviours we can adopt (and do consistently) that will give us the most energy deposits back. Then we can build from there. We need to look at insulin resistance, muscle building, proper fueling, sleep optimization, nutrient levels, and recovery.

Body composition can absolutely be part of the conversation, but I don’t want it to be the only conversation, instead we need to build a strategy that supports metabolic health, hormones and long-term sustainability instead of just chasing a smaller number on the scale.
Want the no-BS version of how I approach PMOS?

A lot of iron symptoms can look like “hormone symptoms”, hormonal changes can lead to low iron, and low iron makes hormonal symptoms worse.

Fatigue, brain fog, poor temperature regulation, hair loss, and heavy periods all point to “we should probably test your iron” and consider your hormones.

If this sounds familiar, it may be worth looking at the whole picture so you can focus on a treatment plan that is actually addressing what needs to be addressed.

If you’re ready to dive deeper into what’s going on with you, you can book a 1:1 consultation through the link in my bio. 🤍

“I want to lose weight and feel like myself again.” I hear some version of this all the time.

That sentence alone doesn’t tell me what treatment should look like.
A 32-year-old with irregular periods, acne and insulin resistance is a very different clinical picture from a 44-year-old whose periods have suddenly changed and who is waking up sweating at 3am, and both of these women are different from the woman who is training five days a week, eating 1,400 calories, has a ferritin of 12 and cannot figure out why she is exhausted.

That’s why I don’t have a single “hormone diet” or supplement protocol that I hand everyone who walks through my door. We figure out what is actually going on first, then we build the plan around that.

That’s the part of the healthcare that happens in my office I love most, taking all of the pieces that feel disconnected and turning them into a strategy that actually makes sense for the person sitting in front of me.

If you’re ready to figure out what your plan actually needs to look like, you can book an initial consultation through the link in my bio. 🤍

A calorie deficit has to exist for fat loss, but that doesn’t mean eating less should always be the first thing we do.

If someone is exhausted, under-fuelling, not eating enough protein, barely recovering, not strength training consistently, or trying to make up for a sedentary day with really intense workouts, there are some foundations I want to establish for them first.

This is even more important when we’re talking about PMOS or perimenopause, where the strategy is always more complex than just “try harder.”

That’s the philosophy behind the Evolved Metabolic Method:

Individualized Clinical Strategy → Fuel → Recover → Build → Move → then fat loss, when appropriate.

The goal isn’t just to weigh less, It’s to feel stronger, have more energy, feel more confident in your body, and build a strategy you can actually maintain long term.

If you’re tired of the eat-less, move-more cycle, stay tuned, I’ll be sharing a lot more about this approach over the next few weeks. 🤍

5 weight-loss truths I wish more women were told before starting another diet:

1️⃣If you’re not losing weight, it’s probably not because you’re “eating too little.”
More often, intake is inconsistent. You can eat very little Monday–Thursday and still not be in a calorie deficit across the week if the rest of the week looks completely different.

2️⃣You need to eat enough to build muscle.
If your entire strategy is to keep cutting food lower and lower, it becomes pretty difficult to train well, recover well and actually build muscle. Muscle matters, it’s metabolically active tissue, so building and preserving it supports a higher metabolic rate and helps your body use more energy at rest.

3️⃣ Sustainable fat loss should include BUILDING, not just shrinking.
Yes, a calorie deficit is what drives fat loss, but I don’t want you losing weight by just eating as little as possible, losing muscle along the way, eventually reaching a weight you can’t maintain and starting the whole process over again. I want us building strength and muscle while we work toward changing body composition.

4️⃣ Strength training matters more than trying to burn the most calories possible during your workout.
Your workout doesn’t need to destroy you or show some massive calorie burn on your watch. I would much rather see you progressively getting stronger over time.

5️⃣ The plan should make your life better, not make you miserable.
You should have enough energy to work, parent, train, sleep, socialize and generally feel like yourself. Being hungry, exhausted and thinking about food all day is not the goal.

That’s really the philosophy behind the Evolved Metabolic Method.
Yes, we can work toward fat loss, but we’re also going to fuel your body, build muscle, support recovery and create a way of living that actually makes you feel stronger, happier, more energetic and more confident.

I’m much less interested in helping you get really good at losing weight temporarily.

I want to help you build a body, and a strategy, you can actually maintain. 🤍

Stop shrinking. Start building.

If your entire weight-loss strategy is “eat less and move more,” we need to talk.

Especially if you have PMOS, insulin resistance, or you’re moving through perimenopause.

A calorie deficit still matters for fat loss, but that doesn’t mean eating less should always be step one.

If you’re under-eating protein, not building muscle, barely sleeping, sitting most of the day and then trying to compensate with intense workouts, there are probably some foundations we need to work on first.

That’s why my approach starts with:
Fuel → Recover → Build → Move → then Fat Loss, when appropriate.

I don’t want you getting really good at losing the same 10–20 pounds over and over again, I want you to build a stronger, healthier, more metabolically resilient body, and a strategy that actually makes sense for your hormones and your life.

That’s the Evolved Metabolic Method. 🤍

If you’ve ever left a healthcare appointment thinking, “I still have a million questions” I get why booking with someone new can feel nerve-wracking.

My initial appointments are 60 minutes for a reason.
We have time to talk through what’s been happening, what you’ve already tried, your health history, your previous blood work, and all of the pieces that might actually be contributing.

We don’t need to fix everything in one visit, but we do need to figure out what matters most and where it makes sense to start.

You don’t need to show up with your health story perfectly organized.
That’s my job.

Ready to get started? You can book an initial appointment (in person in Waterloo or virtual anywhere in Ontario) using the link in my bio 🤍
