October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. 🤍
For some, October is simply another month. For those of us who have experienced pregnancy or infant loss, it can carry a weight that is difficult to put into words.
I know this kind of loss personally. I am a mother who carries the love and memory of babies who are not here in my arms. I’m also a physiotherapist who has the privilege of walking alongside women through pregnancy, birth, postpartum recovery, and the many changes that come with becoming a mother.
Those two parts of my life have changed the way I see this month.
Pregnancy and infant loss doesn’t mean that a baby is forgotten.
It doesn’t mean their life didn’t matter because it was short.
And it certainly doesn’t mean we stop being their mother/father.
We remember.
We say their names.
We talk about them.
We make space for them in our families and in our hearts.
Because they mattered. They are part of our stories. They are part of who we are.
October 15th is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day and the Wave of Light. Around the world, families come together to remember the babies they have lost and to honour the love that remains.
For bereaved parents, this month can bring grief, but it can also bring connection. It can be a reminder that we are not alone and that our babies deserve to be remembered.
So if you know someone who has experienced loss, don’t be afraid to say their baby’s name.
Ask about them.
Remember them with their parents.
Let them know their baby mattered.
And to every parent carrying this kind of love and loss:
Your baby mattered. Your baby is remembered. And you will always be their parent. 🤍
This October 🕯️ I will be remembering my babies, saying their names, and carrying their memory with me — just as I always do. 🩵🦋💜
