At In Touch & In Tune Counselling, I believe that caring for our well-being means honouring all parts of who we are: our minds, our bodies, our emotions, and our spirits.

Spiritual health is an important part of the human experience, yet it can sometimes be overlooked in conversations about mental health and healing.

Why does spiritual health matter in counselling?

🌱 Meaning & Purpose: Exploring what matters most to us can help us navigate life’s challenges and reconnect with our values.

🤍 Connection & Belonging: Feeling connected to ourselves, others, nature, our communities, or our spiritual beliefs can be a meaningful source of support.

🕊️ Hope & Resilience: Making space for hope, reflection, and inner peace can support us through seasons of uncertainty, grief, change, and growth.

💚 Whole Person Healing: Our emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual well being are interconnected. Recognizing these dimensions allows us to approach healing with greater compassion and curiosity.

At In Touch & In Tune Counselling, I strive to create a safe, supportive, and non judgmental space where you can explore what healing, connection, and well being mean to you. Spirituality doesn’t have to mean religion. It is deeply personal, and your beliefs, values, and lived experiences deserve to be honoured.

As we recognize Spiritual Health Awareness Week, may we be reminded to slow down, listen inward, reconnect with what grounds us, and nurture the parts of ourselves that help us feel whole.

Sometimes, healing begins when we get in touch with what we feel and in tune with what matters most.

As a religious trauma counsellor, here are my thoughts on the Cornell 7. 💭

We can do better.

We can teach modesty without shame.
We can teach wisdom without victim-blaming.
We can teach boundaries without making women responsible for enforcing them against men.
We can teach sexual holiness without making women’s bodies the primary focus of sexual morality.

And we can teach our sons:

Respect women.

Not because they are someone’s daughter.
Not because they belong to someone’s future husband.
Not because they are responsible for your purity.

But because they are human beings made in the image of God. Women do not need another sermon teaching them how to avoid being violated.

They need a community that understands that the responsibility for another person’s violence never belonged to them in the first place.

I often get asked about my professional journey. I hear things like, “Wow, you’ve done a lot for your age,” or “You’ve accomplished so much through your education and professional career.”

The truth is, much of where I am today can be traced back to a little program that started it all when I was 18: Lifeteams. Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending the 25th anniversary celebration of the program. It was incredibly meaningful to reflect on how much Lifeteams has shaped the person I have become.

So many of the skills, courage, dedication, and commitment to living out my purpose were nurtured through my experiences there. It gave me a foundation that has continued to influence both my personal and professional journey. I am incredibly grateful for the people, lessons, challenges, and opportunities that Lifeteams brought into my life and for the lasting impact it continues to have.

As a counsellor, I am reminded often that where we are today is shaped by the experiences, relationships, and people who have walked alongside us along the way. Growth does not happen in isolation. Sometimes, one experience or one person can plant a seed that shapes the direction of our entire lives. And sometimes, we do not realize just how significant those moments are until we look back.

As my mentor Rob has famously quoted:
“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” I think there is so much truth in that, especially when we think about our own growth and healing. We are not meant to navigate life alone. The right people, communities, mentors, and relationships can help us find courage, build resilience, and become more of who we are meant to be.

Who has been part of your journey? Who helped you become the person you are today?

Watching The Death of a Pastor’s Wife through the lens of a religious trauma therapist raised some deeply uncomfortable questions about faith, power, control, and autonomy.

Religious trauma isn’t about saying religion is inherently harmful. It’s about recognizing what can happen when spiritual authority becomes unquestionable, doubt becomes shameful, and obedience takes priority over personal agency.

This documentary reminded me how much can exist beneath the surface of a seemingly devoted faith community.

When does faith become control?
When does obedience silence your own voice?
And what happens when questioning is no longer allowed?

These are difficult conversations, but they matter. 🕊️

Writing

Some transitions arrive quietly. No warning, no map, just a feeling that something is shifting. I’m in the middle of one right now: moving to Alberta and stepping into a new chapter of life. There’s excitement, grief, uncertainty, and a whole lot of “what now?” in the in between. The mystery of transition is that you can’t always see where the path is leading. You can only learn to trust yourself as you walk it. ✨

Five mental health tools that have helped me navigate the unknown:

1. Journaling to give my thoughts somewhere to land instead of carrying them all in my head.

2. Grounding to come back to my senses and remind myself that I am safe in this moment.

3. Movement through walking, stretching, and getting outside to help process emotions through my body.

4. Connection by talking honestly with people I trust and allowing myself to receive support.

5. Self compassion to remind myself that I don’t need to have everything figured out while I’m becoming.

Maybe the mystery of transition isn’t about knowing exactly what comes next. Maybe it’s about learning to be present with the unknown and trusting that I’ll meet the next version of my life when I get there.

Religious trauma is real. ✨

Sometimes it looks like guilt, shame, fear of making the “wrong” choice, or feeling like you’re never quite good enough.

Therapy can help you untangle what you were taught from what you actually believe. It gives you space to question, set boundaries, heal, and build a relationship with yourself that isn’t rooted in fear.

Healing doesn’t have to mean rejecting everything. Sometimes it’s simply choosing what still feels true and letting go of what doesn’t.
