Some thoughts on the recent bone compression study by Cai et. al.

Big news: A few weeks ago, it was discovered that therapeutic bone compression may play a role in helping the brain heal. In a September 2026 study involving mice and pigs, researchers found that controlled, repeated compression of the tibia helped recovery after brain injury. In mice, it also improved recovery after stroke. In my books, Melting Bone, Healing Tide and Unwinding Bone, I have argued that gentle bone compression can be therapeutic by causing local skeletal change and by potentially impacting the bone-brain and gut-bone-brain axis. The repetitive nature of the compressions used in this study differ from the sustained compression I discuss, but the amount of force used is similar. It is exciting to see intraosseous phenomena and therapeutic bone compression getting more attention. Could these results imply that BST-type bone compression in humans leads to faster recovery after TBI or stroke? Thanks to this experiment, we can now say more confidently that it could. Scott
