Are you growing rosemary? Fall is harvest time, although it can tolerate the cold. I just have to remember to bring it in before the soil in the pot freezes. Did you know it will bloom inside? Do you want to know how to get it to survive the winter inside? If so leave a comment and I will do another post with that information.

Who wouldn’t love those golden blossoms?

Before you pull that goldenrod, look closer.

Late summer is when many native bees are running out of flowers. Goldenrod is one of the season’s most important final food sources, providing nectar and pollen when many other blooms are already gone.

And goldenrod usually isn’t the reason you’re sneezing. Its heavy, sticky pollen is carried by insects. Ragweed—the plant blooming nearby—is wind-pollinated and far more likely to trigger fall allergies.

So if goldenrod is growing along your fence, beside the driveway, or at the edge of your garden, consider leaving it until it finishes blooming. If you plant it intentionally, choose a native species suited to your region.

That bright yellow “weed” may be one of the last meals a bee gets before winter.
