A student can read every word correctly and still struggle to understand the sentence.

A new LD@school resource, The Science of Reading in High School: Maximizing Student Success through Sentence Comprehension, looks beyond individual words to explore how sentence structure and syntax can affect reading comprehension.

As texts become more complex in secondary school, students need to understand not only what individual words mean, but how words, phrases, and ideas work together within sentences.

The resource explores four common sentence-level barriers:
• sentence length
• sentence density
• dependency within sentences
• word order

It also introduces a practical five-step process educators can use to help students unpack challenging sentences:

1. Identify the sentence core
2. Identify the barrier
3. Clarify the challenging features
4. Connect the pieces
5. Reconstruct the meaning

With examples from different subject areas, the resource offers practical ways secondary educators can make complex text more accessible, particularly for students with learning disabilities and other language comprehension challenges.

Understanding assessment matters. So does what happens before, during, and after it.

A new LD@school video series with Dr. Christianne Durish is helping educators and families better understand psychoeducational assessment and how it can support students.

The first two videos explore:

What is the purpose of a psychoeducational assessment?
How assessment can help identify patterns of strengths and needs, better understand factors contributing to academic difficulties, and inform appropriate supports.

How is a psychoeducational assessment completed?

An introduction to interviews, standardized testing, questionnaires, behavioural observations, feedback, and the final report.

But assessment is only one part of a much larger pathway.
LDAO’s discussion brief, Strengthening Assessment Pathways and Supports, asks a broader question: how do we ensure students move from early concern to understanding, instructional response, assessment when needed, and meaningful ongoing support?
The issue is not assessment access alone. It is also what happens before, during, and after assessment, so that students are understood and supported earlier rather than left waiting for a single event before meaningful action happens.

New Resource: Supporting Executive Function in the Classroom: Practical Strategies for Independence and Success

A new LD@school resource, Supporting Executive Function in the Classroom: Practical Strategies for Independence and Success, is now available.

Drawing on Terri Jackson’s work with educators, the resource explores practical ways to support students with planning, organization, self-regulation, and other executive functioning demands while continuing to build independence and maintain high expectations.

Explore strategies such as visual supports, structured routines, breaking larger tasks into manageable steps, and helping students become more aware of the strategies that work for them.

Whether you joined Terri live or are discovering this learning for the first time, the resource offers practical ideas you can bring into the classroom.
