It’s often thought that, because DMD impacts muscle repair, people living with the condition should avoid exercise. In fact, staying active can play an important role in supporting physical function, but it’s about finding the right balance and the right kind of activity. Gentle, low-impact movement such as swimming or stretching, guided by a healthcare team, can help maintain flexibility, support joint health and promote overall wellbeing as well as providing valuable opportunities to socialise.¹⁻²
By replacing misinformation with understanding, we can empower people with DMD and their families to make informed decisions and thrive, on the court, in the pool, or wherever suits them.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) isn’t just a childhood condition.
Thanks to advances in diagnosis, multidisciplinary care and treatment, nearly 9 in 10 people with DMD now live to celebrate their 20th birthday, and many are living into their 30s.¹˒²
However, too many assumptions about DMD remain rooted in the past. As people with DMD are living longer, they deserve healthcare, support systems and opportunities that reflect the realities of adulthood.

It’s time to move beyond old stereotypes and recognise that DMD is a lifelong condition. By raising awareness, challenging misconceptions and advocating for continued investment in research, care and equitable access to treatment, we can change the conversation around DMD—because progress in medicine should also be matched by progress in understanding.

Many people know DMD as a genetic condition, naturally assuming a family history is required to develop it. However, approximately 1 in 3 DMD cases arise because of a random mutation, meaning it can occur without any previous family record.¹

Recognising DMD early is therefore important, even in those you might not suspect. Look out for symptoms such as difficulties in running, jumping, frequent falls, trouble climbing stairs, toe walking, Gowers’ Sign (using a walking motion with hands to stand up), or enlarged calf muscles.²

Acting early means access to care, support, and interventions that could make a huge difference.

The way Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is talked about shapes how people living with the condition are seen, supported and included.

DMD is a lifelong condition, but it does not define a person’s ambitions, achievements or identity. Choosing language that reflects independence, individuality and possibility helps challenge outdated perceptions and creates a more inclusive conversation.

Small changes in the words we use can make a big difference:

❌ “Suffers from DMD”
✅ “Lives with DMD”
People with DMD can thrive, and to imply that they ‘suffer’ is to take away all the joy they gain from life every day.

❌ “Confined to a wheelchair”
✅ “Uses a wheelchair for mobility”
A wheelchair is a tool and a powerful one at that, it’s as non-sensical as saying someone is confined to their running shoes when out for a jog.

❌ “DMD patients are unable to…”
✅ “People living with DMD may experience…”
DMD affects everyone differently, and individual experiences vary.

People living with DMD are students, professionals, friends, family members and advocates. They have goals, passions and stories that extend far beyond their diagnosis.

By choosing words that empower rather than limit, we can help change the way DMD is understood, because better language leads to better awareness—and better awareness drives better support.

Caring for someone living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a daily commitment that requires strength, resilience, and constant adaptation. Caregivers are at the centre of care, supporting treatment routines, navigating evolving needs, and helping maintain quality of life through every stage of the condition.

At Santhera we are committed to advancing care in DMD, working alongside patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals to support better understanding of the disease and continued progress in treatment options.
Improving outcomes in DMD means supporting not just patients, but the people who care for them every day.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rare and progressive genetic condition that primarily affects boys, causing muscles to gradually weaken over time. For those living with DMD, and the families supporting them, every day can bring new challenges.

That’s why we’re incredibly proud to celebrate the impact of our 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗻, a remarkable effort that saw staff at Santhera collectively travel 𝟮𝟱.𝟰 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀— 𝗼𝗿 𝟭𝟵,𝟯𝟱𝟬 𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀— in support of the boys and caregivers consistently showing strength in the face of this unique, often unpredictable condition. To us, every step represented more than distance. It represented solidarity with the patient journey; a shared determination to help make a difference for the DMD community.

The funds raised through our campaign will be donated to the World Duchenne Organization through “Steps for Access,” Santhera’s initiative supporting three projects across different regions to improve access to care, sport and mobility for people living with Duchenne. The initiative aligns with the 2026 World Duchenne Awareness Day theme, “Access Changes Lives.”

A huge thank you to everyone who took part, donated, encouraged a colleague, or helped us keep moving day after day. Together, we’ve shown what can happen when we move forward with purpose.💙

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rare, genetic condition that causes progressive muscle weakness. However, for those living with DMD, weakness is the very last thing that defines them.

That’s why today - DMD Awareness Day - we’re taking the opportunity to celebrate the strength of patients, caregivers, and professionals involved in DMD care.

Providing an important moment to:
- Raise awareness of DMD 🎈
- Educate others about the realities of living with DMD 🎈
- Celebrate the strength of the Duchenne community 🎈
- Support the families and individuals affected 🎈
- Keep pushing for better care, greater understanding and greater access to information, care, and community support. 🎈

At Santhera Pharmaceuticals, we know that real strength comes from the wider DMD community facing the future together, with every conversation helping to create a world where nobody impacted by DMD has to go unseen or unheard. So, this DMD awareness day let’s…

Raise awareness. Show support. Make a difference. 🎈

Managing DMD is a team effort, whether you’re talking about the researchers advancing treatment options behind the scenes, or the many specialists tirelessly working in hospitals and clinics every day, helping patients achieve their fullest potential.
At Santhera Pharmaceuticals we know that caregivers at home are the final - and crucial - member of this team and, together, it’s time to recognise the outstanding round-the-clock effort that lays the foundation for lifechanging care. After all, DMD is not only experienced by patients, but carers too, in every shape and size.

Most people have never heard of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) — but for thousands of families, it shapes everyday life. DMD is a genetic condition that causes muscle damage from an early age, long before symptoms become apparent.

Recognising the early signs such as delayed motor milestones, difficulty climbing stairs or rising from the floor is important, enabling timely access to appropriate care, support, and therapeutic interventions. Some of the most common signs include:
• Gowers’ Sign: When a child ‘walks’ up with their arms to stand up from the floor.
• Delays in motor milestones, such as trouble climbing stairs, running or jumping.
• Enlarged calf muscles

👉 Save and share to help more people recognise the signs. Greater awareness means faster recognition, better care, and improved outcomes.

Although the visible signs of DMD usually don’t appear until a child is between 2 and 3 years of age¹, the disease actually begins to affect the muscles long before birth². These silent changes start while the baby is still growing in the womb, signalling the start of a lifelong process.²

Recognising DMD early and securing a prompt diagnosis is vital so that families can access the right care, support, and interventions without delay.
