There is a significant difference between exercising the body in pursuit of aesthetics, efficiency or the refinement of an ideal movement, and engaging in a somatic practice whose purpose is to investigate how movement is actually experienced from within.
The latter asks for a different kind of investment. It requires time, attention and a willingness to remain with sensations that are often subtle, unfamiliar or difficult to name. Rather than repeating a movement until it becomes more precise, we begin to explore its variations, its origins, its relationships with breath, gravity, space, rhythm and intention. Through this process, the body gradually becomes less confined to familiar patterns and more capable of perceiving and responding to what is happening in each moment.
What develops is not simply greater bodily awareness, but a richer kinaesthetic vocabulary: more possibilities for moving, sensing, expressing and communicating through the body. The value of the practice lies precisely in this expansion — in discovering that movement can become a field of inquiry rather than a form to be perfected.
It is a slower process, but what it cultivates goes far beyond physical performance. It changes the way we inhabit the body, perceive ourselves and relate to the world through movement.
