Understanding Herpes Simplex and how to prevent it
📌 what’s Herpes Simplex
Herpes simplex is a viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). It has two main types:
🔹 HSV-1: Commonly causes oral herpes, including cold sores around the lips or mouth, but can also cause ge***al herpes.
🔹 HSV-2: Mainly causes ge***al herpes, although either type can infect the mouth or ge***als.
📌 2️⃣ WHAT CAUSES HERPES SIMPLEX?
Herpes spreads through direct contact with an infected area or infected skin and mucous membranes.
Common routes of transmission include:
🔸 Kissing someone who has oral herpes, particularly when cold sores are present.
🔸 Oral s*x, vaginal s*x, or a**l s*x with an infected person.
🔸 Skin-to-skin contact with an infected area, even when sores are not visible, because the virus can sometimes be shed without symptoms.
🔸 Transmission from a mother to her baby during childbirth, particularly when the mother has a new ge***al herpes infection near delivery.
📌 3️⃣ WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS?
Some people have no noticeable symptoms. Others may experience:
✅ Small, painful blisters around the mouth or ge***als.
✅ Sores that break open and form crusts.
✅ Tingling, itching, or burning before blisters appear.
✅ Pain during urination when ge***al sores are present.
✅ Fever, body aches, or swollen lymph nodes during the first outbreak.
📌 4️⃣ HOW CAN YOU PREVENT HERPES SIMPLEX?
Here are important steps to reduce your risk:
✅ Use condoms correctly: They reduce the risk of ge***al herpes transmission but cannot provide complete protection because uncovered skin can still transmit the virus.
✅ Avoid s*xual contact during an outbreak: Do not engage in oral, vaginal, or a**l s*x when you or your partner has active sores or warning symptoms such as tingling or burning.
✅ Avoid kissing during cold sore outbreaks: Oral herpes can spread through direct contact with cold sores.
✅ Communicate with your partner: Discuss herpes status and possible risks honestly and without stigma.
✅ Do not share items contaminated with saliva during an active cold sore outbreak: Avoid sharing items such as lip balm, and wash your hands after touching a sore.
✅ Seek medical advice: Antiviral medicines can help control outbreaks and reduce transmission risk. However, they do not eliminate the virus from the body.
📌 5️⃣ CAN HERPES BE CURED?
Currently, there is no cure that eliminates herpes simplex virus from the body.
The virus remains in the body in an inactive state and may reactivate later. However, antiviral medicines can shorten outbreaks, reduce symptoms, and help prevent frequent recurrences.
