There are three lab tests that are almost never offered to women — and they happen to be three of the most telling ones you can run.

Most standard panels are built to rule out disease. They are not built to describe how a body is actually running, which is a completely different question.

•The first is progesterone.
•The second is free T3 — the active thyroid hormone — not TSH, which tells you what the pituitary is asking for, not what the body is actually receiving.
•The third is DHEAS, which speaks to the adrenals.
Taken together, those three give a remarkably clear picture of what the adrenal, thyroid and ovarian axis is doing. That is very often where the answer is sitting when a woman is exhausted and has been told everything came back normal.

Because a number inside a reference range is not the same thing as a number that is working for you.
You are allowed to ask for these by name.
Save this one and take the three names with you to your next appointment.

Most men do not see a doctor between the age of their last vaccination and their first heart attack.

I say that as a joke. It is not one.
Andropause is one of the most overlooked conditions in men today — not because it is rare, but because nobody brings it up. And even when a man does sit down across from a doctor, the question of whether his hormones and his nutrition have been quietly draining away is usually not on the table at all. It stays off the table unless he asks for it himself, and keeps asking.

That is a lot to expect from someone who was raised to wait until something breaks.

So if you have symptoms — the tiredness that sleep doesn’t touch, the flat mood, the strength that keeps slipping — that is worth taking to someone who will sit down and look at all your levels with you. Not someone who glances at whether you landed inside a normal range and sends you home.

Normal is a very wide window. Optimal sits above the 75th percentile.
Send this to the man who hasn’t seen a doctor since his last vaccination.

The word “hormones” makes most men stop listening. That’s exactly the problem.

Testicular hormones decline in men. Ovarian hormones decline in women. That part is aging, and I’m not going to argue with aging.

But there is a second system sitting underneath both — the adrenal and thyroid axis — and that one was never meant to weaken. When it does, everything else starts leaning on a support that isn’t there.

That is the decline almost nobody is looking at. Not because it’s rare, but because it got filed under “women’s problems” decades ago and quietly left there.
I have watched men sit in the waiting room while their wife came in for her labs, completely certain that none of it applied to them.

It was never a women’s issue. It was a human one, relabeled and then ignored.

If you are tired in a way that sleep doesn’t touch, that is worth asking about — whoever you are.

Send this to the man who is sure this isn’t about him.

After Hurricane Ian, everyone kept saying the same thing: we have to clean up. We have to do this.

The State Park in North Captiva is one of my absolute favorite places to be. I used to walk through it and feel completely alone — with nature, and with God. Then the storm took it apart.

When I went back, what struck me wasn’t the chaos. It was the beauty already coming back, quietly, on its own schedule, with nobody managing it.

Nature is not in a hurry. But it gets everything done.

I think about that whenever I meet a woman who is exhausted and still pushing. We treat rest as the thing we’ll get to once everything else is handled — but the island didn’t wait for permission, and it didn’t rush.

Whatever you are rebuilding right now is probably further along than it feels.

Save this for a day when you’re pushing too hard.

I sell supplements. I still tell people to start with food.
Not because supplements don’t matter — I built a company because I believe they do.

But food arrives packaged. The vitamin C in an orange comes wrapped in flavonoids. The magnesium in greens comes with the cofactors that help you use it. The nutrient was never meant to travel alone.

That’s what gets lost when we start thinking in single ingredients. A label tells you what’s in the bottle. It doesn’t tell you what your body was expecting to find alongside it.

So the order matters. Food first, as far as it takes you. Then look at what’s still coming back low, and fill that gap on purpose — not out of habit, and not because a label made a promise.

Nobody taught us to think this way round. The shelf is easier to reach than the kitchen, and the industry I work in has not exactly discouraged that.

Send this to the friend who has a shelf full of bottles and still doesn’t feel better.

Your body doesn’t run out of hormones. It spends them.

When your nervous system runs in overdrive — not occasionally, but as your normal setting — it draws continuously on the same raw materials your body uses to build hormones. Pregnenolone. DHEA. Progesterone. Testosterone. They get spent faster than they get replaced.

That is why this gets misread so often. It looks like a hormone problem, so it gets handled as one. But if nothing turns down the system doing the spending, you are pouring into a tank that is still draining.

Magnesium is where I keep landing. Hundreds of enzyme reactions depend on it, including the ones that calm that system down — and it is the mineral that comes back low most consistently, test after test, in people who genuinely eat well. Not because they are doing anything wrong. Our soil carries less than it used to, and our way of living asks more than it used to.

There is one detail most people get half right, and it is the difference between taking magnesium and actually using it. It is in the guide, because it needs a diagram rather than a sentence.

I put what I actually check into it — the four that come back low, again and again, and the forms worth asking for. It’s free.

Comment MINERALS and I’ll send it to you.

Nobody starts menopause at fifty. They just start noticing it at fifty.

The process is quiet for a long time before it has a name. It shows up in your twenties and thirties as things that look far too small to connect. A cycle that stops being predictable. Tiredness that sleep doesn’t fix. A restlessness that arrives without a reason.

I heard those three described separately for most of my career, by women who never thought to mention them in the same appointment. Each one gets its own quick answer. Each answer is reasonable on its own. What none of them do is ask the obvious question — why did three separate things appear in the same body, in the same decade?

That question is the whole difference. Not because there is something wrong with you at twenty-five, but because a pattern noticed early is a pattern you still have decades to work with. Noticed at fifty, it has already been running for thirty years, unread.

So if you are young and you have been told that what you are describing is normal at your age: write it down anyway. When it started. What changed around it. What it costs you. Not to hand yourself a diagnosis — to have something real to bring to the conversation later.
Menopause is not optional. What you do with the thirty years before it is.

Send this to someone in her twenties or thirties. She still has the time.

Colder hands. Colder feet. Nobody ever asks about those.
There is a version of not-quite-right that never makes it into an appointment, because each piece sounds too small to mention. Hair that changed texture. Feet that are cold in a warm room. A mind that takes a second longer to find the word it wants.
On their own they are nothing. Together they are a pattern — and a pattern is worth saying out loud.
Here is the part that surprises people. A hormone’s effect on you is not only about how much of it is circulating. It also depends on how well the receptor receives it, and on the co-factors your body needs to do anything with it at all. Two people can hold the same number on paper and feel entirely different in their bodies.
So a result inside the range answers one question accurately: how much is there. It was never designed to answer the other one.
If this sounds like you, don’t walk in asking for a different diagnosis. Walk in with the pattern. Say what changed, when it changed, and what it has cost you. That is the conversation that actually goes somewhere.
Save this before your next appointment.

Hormones don’t only go down with age. They go down with everything you said yes to.

For most of my career I heard it the other way round. Falling hormones were treated as a birthday problem — something that arrives at a certain decade and has to be accepted. But across all those years of practice, the flattest numbers I saw rarely belonged to the oldest women in the room. They belonged to the busiest.

The commitments. The travel. The being reachable. The years of turning up to everything because turning up is what you do. That pace draws on the same reserve your body uses to make the hormones that keep you steady — so the more capable you are, the faster the account runs down.

Which is why “your results are normal” can be true and still be the wrong finish line. Normal describes where most people sit. Most people are also exhausted. If you’re asking your body to perform, sitting in the middle of that range is not the same as being well.

None of this is a reason to do less with your life. It’s a reason to stop treating your own maintenance as the thing that can always wait.

Send this to the woman in your life who never stops. She’ll know.

🤍 Normal is a range. It’s where most people land.
That sentence took me years to say out loud, because it sounds like I’m arguing with a lab. I’m not. When a result comes back inside the reference range, the reading is accurate — the range describes where most people fall. It was never designed to describe where you feel your best.
So when a woman sits in front of me exhausted, holding a page of numbers that all say fine, both things are true at once. The page is right. She is also right.
