The EU expanded the scope for electronic instructions for use for medical devices intended for professional users in 2025. That brings a practical translation question into view: which version will someone find when they need it?

A translated instruction may be linked from a product page, a QR code or a distributor portal. When the source changes, each route needs to lead to the appropriate language version for the device concerned.

It helps to plan language selection, revision identifiers and access to earlier instructions alongside the translation workflow. Those decisions are much harder to untangle after several versions have been published.

For teams working with electronic instructions, where does version control become most complicated?

“Serious” and “severe” can feel interchangeable in everyday conversation. In a safety report, they describe different things.

Severity concerns intensity, while seriousness is assessed against criteria such as hospitalisation, a life-threatening event or other medically important circumstances. A severe headache, for example, does not automatically meet the criteria for a serious adverse event.

For a translator, the difficulty is preserving that distinction in a language where the most natural everyday equivalents may overlap. The project glossary needs to distinguish the concepts, and the review needs to check how they are used in the actual narrative.

The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) is exploding. By 2027, the average patient in a clinical trial might generate thousands of data points daily via wearables.
But here is the challenge: The Data Feedback Loop.
When a device in France triggers an alert for a researcher in the US, that data needs to be interpreted in real-time. We are entering an era of "Micro-Translations" – short, urgent bursts of data-driven communication that must be instantaneous and accurate.
The future of medical translation isn't just about 100-page manuals, but also about the UI/UX of life-saving data.

As wearable tech becomes standard in trials, do you think the industry is prepared for the sheer volume of multilingual data?

The industry loves Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). We love templates. We love uniformity. But when it comes to global patient recruitment, uniformity is the enemy of engagement.

A recruitment poster that works in Berlin will likely fail in São Paulo, even if the translation is technically perfect.

The imagery might feel too "clinical" for a culture that values community support.
The tone might be too "authoritative" for a population with historical distrust of medical institutions.

If we want diverse trials, we have to stop treating "Global" as one single market. We need to move from Translation to Cultural Adaptation.

There is a persistent myth that a "medical translator" is just a linguist with a medical dictionary. In reality, the best ones are often former clinicians, pharmacists, or researchers.
Why? Because of Contextual Memory.
✔️ A generalist sees the word "Administration."
✔️ A business translator thinks: Management.
✔️ A legal translator thinks: Ex*****on.
✔️ A Medical Translator asks: Is it oral, intravenous, or topical? And is the patient self-administering or being treated by a professional?

The stakes are too high for "close enough." We believe that to translate the science, you first have to understand the surgery, the molecule, or the mechanism of action.

One useful test for patient-facing medical content:
Read it when you're tired.

Not because tired translators produce better work.
Because the patient reading the instructions may be tired, stressed, in pain, distracted or frightened.

A sentence that's perfectly understandable when you're calmly analysing it at your desk can become surprisingly difficult when cognitive load increases.

Readability boils down to a real-world user in a real-word situation.

Things a medical translator may search during an ordinary working day:

“difference between lesion and nodule”
“can catheter be a verb”
“official EMA terminology thrombocytopenia”
“is this anatomical structure actually real”
“what does physician mean by ‘significant’ here”
“plural of thrombus”
“plural of thrombus AGAIN”

Research is a much bigger part of professional translation than people outside the field usually imagine.

And yes: thrombi.

Medical terminology becomes considerably more entertaining when you look at the original meanings.

➡️ Hippocampus → “seahorse”
➡️Coccyx → “cuckoo”
➡️Pancreas → “all flesh”
➡️Carotid → related to “to stupefy” or “put to sleep”
➡️ Muscle → from Latin musculus, literally “little mouse”
Apparently someone looked at a flexing muscle and thought:
There is clearly a tiny mouse under that skin.
In Serbian, the term for muscles is literally "little mice" 🐁

Anatomy was a more imaginative profession than we give it credit for.

A medical translator walks into a pharmacy.

Reads the leaflet.

Reads the box.

Reads the poster.

Reads the warning label.

Notices inconsistent terminology between all four.

Forgets why they came in.

Occupational hazard.
