Let’s talk about melasma: what it is, what causes it and how to treat it.
Melasma is a common skin condition that causes brown or grey-brown patches, typically on the face. It is not harmful, but it can be stubborn and challenging to treat.
Common contributing factors include:
• Sun exposure and UV radiation
• Hormonal changes, including pregnancy, birth control or hormone therapy
• Genetics
• Skin irritation or inflammation
Melasma commonly appears on sun-exposed areas such as the forehead, temples, cheeks, upper lip and chin. The pigmentation may look different for every person, and the patches can be light or dark.
How do we treat melasma?
Consistency is essential. Effective management usually requires a combination of the correct ingredients, strict sun protection and patience.
• Daily broad-spectrum SPF 50+ with regular reapplication
• A professional topical protocol at Cellsan Med Spa, based on scientific research and more than 20 years of experience
• Professional treatments such as carefully selected chemical peels and acoustic laser treatments, including Pico or Q-Switched Laser
What should be avoided?
• Skipping sunscreen
• Harsh scrubs or aggressive exfoliation
• Excessive heat exposure, including saunas and hot yoga
• DIY treatments such as lemon or baking soda
• Heat-inducing treatments such as ablative lasers or IPL, which may worsen melasma
• Expecting overnight results
A consistent home-care routine may include professional products such as Renewal Pads, Retinol 1%, Vitamin C, Brightalive and broad-spectrum SPF 50+, selected according to your skin and treatment plan.
Remember:
✓ Wear SPF every day
✓ Be consistent with your routine
