Placement starts with the whole body.
With Oliver’s tattoo, the lion is the centrepiece, connecting the sleeves and leading the eye towards the back. Its size and position give the face room to stand out, while the surrounding shapes carry that movement across the chest and arms.
For a piece this scale, I’m thinking about how it looks from the front, what happens when he turns, and how the composition shifts when his arms move. The important shapes need enough space to stay clear from each angle.
I’m also thinking about what might come next. Every addition changes the whole, so leaving room for the tattoo to grow is part of the design from the beginning.
Dallas, I’ll be joining soon! If you’re thinking about a larger project, join my waitlist for first access when bookings open. Link in bio.
