CAPTURE/RESEMBLE is an installation from Andreas Lutz currently in exhibition at Himmel Unter Berlin and easily one of the best and most relevant artworks I’ve seen all year, which is quite ironic, since it’s powered by an AI.
If you take a 10s look at my profile, you will know where I stand on the AI vs Art debate, so it’s pretty cool that another artist like Andreas come to blurry the lines of my convictions and make the debate more nuanced.
His installation combines elements of mass surveillance, mass data collection, autonomous robotics, machine learning, privacy and he does it in a very fun way, which is pretty fundamental to his concept: the machine feeds on human interaction.
If nobody stood in front of it, it would not move. Yet, most people (like myself) are willing to interact with it and give up personal data for entertainment. Fcking brilliant.
In a square meter space, Andreas built a microcosm of some of the biggest challenges humanity will face on the next decade and he made it very physical and almost irresistible to participate. It’s a great moment of self reflection.
I wonder if me posting this on social media, which is nothing but a huge version of his machine, is part of the artwork. It sure feels like it.
I totally suggest a visit to Himmel Unter Berlin. That was not even my favourite installation on the exhibition. Overall great stuff. This is also not a payed post. I just like sharing thoughts about Art sometimes and figured I could start doing it here.
