And sometimes you really are. But nobody sees all the little heartbreaks that come with it.
Missing birthdays, weddings and ordinary Sundays.
Not knowing where home really is anymore.
Missing your language.
Knowing exactly what you want to say but not finding the words that sound like you.
Feeling misunderstood here and somehow back home too.
Seeing the people you love get older only when you visit.
Watching your family love your kids and wishing they could have more time together.
Knowing Grandma is a flight away instead of a Sunday lunch away.
Watching your kids come home singing songs you don’t know, excited about traditions you’re still trying to understand.
Feeling so proud that they belong here, speak different languages, get to know different cultures, and sad about everything they’re missing at the same time.
Going home and realising life has carried on without you.
Coming back and realising this is home too.
Missing friendships that need no effort.
My husband is away for work this week and maybe that’s why it’s hitting harder. I do like our life here. I really do. Some days I want to buy a house and grow roots here, some days I find myself looking for jobs and houses back home… I just wish I could have this life and still pop over to my mom’s. Still sit with my best friends. I never knew you could be so happy with your life and still miss another one so much. 🤍
Anyone else raising kids far from home feel this? Can you ever get over this homesickness feeling?
