Breast implants should not prevent you from attending your recommended mammogram screening.
Mammograms can still detect changes in breast tissue, although implants might make some views more difficult to assess. For this reason, the radiology team may take additional images, including implant-displacement views, to visualise as much breast tissue as possible. (1)

B-Lite® offers advantages in breast imaging compared with traditional silicone implants. Under mammography, the B-Lite® gel is more radiolucent allowing for greater visibility of breast tissue in front of or behind the implant. (2)

Always tell the screening centre that you have implants when booking and on arrival. Mammograms are routinely performed in people with implants, and the radiology team uses adapted techniques to obtain the necessary images while minimising pressure on the implant.

What are the advantages of B-Lite® lightweight implants in breast reconstruction?

“For breast reconstruction, it's fantastic that we now have a variety of implants available.
What I mean is that when someone decides to replace their breast tissue with implants, they have specific size requirements. Some patients have large breasts and therefore need larger volumes. This means a lot of weight, pressure, and tension, especially on the tissue.

That's why I'm very pleased that we have this option. We've had significantly lighter implants available for years now, allowing us to choose lighter implants, especially for breast reconstruction.” -

Dr. med. Mehrnoosh Akhavanpoor - Chief Physician of Plastic, Reconstructive, Aesthetic and Hand Surgery at AGAPLESION Diakonie Kliniken in Kassel, Germany.

Do you know how to perform a breast self-exam?

It is recommended to perform a breast self-exam monthly. The more familiarised you are with your breasts, the better you can recognise any changes.

If you have breast implants, make sure to ask your surgeon to guide you on how to differentiate between the breast tissue and the edges of the implant, so that you can feel confident with your self-examination.

Different people have different symptoms of breast cancer. Some people do not have any symptoms at all. Some warning signs you should pay attention to are:

• A new lump in the breast or underarm (armpit).
• Thickening or swelling of part of the breast.
• Irritation or dimpling of breast skin.
• Redness or flaky skin in the ni**le area or the breast.
• Retraction (pulling in) of the ni**le or pain in the ni**le area.
• Ni**le discharge other than breast milk, including blood.
• Any change in the size or the shape of the breast.
• Pain in any area of the breast that does not go away.

Having one or more of those symptoms does not necessarily mean you have breast cancer, but early detection of breast cancer is key. For peace of mind, make sure to see your doctor right away.

Radiotherapy is an important part of treatment for many women with breast cancer, but it can increase the risk of capsular contracture following implant-based reconstruction. (1)

A comparative clinical study found significantly less severe capsular contracture with Microthane® implants than with conventional textured implants—an advantage that was especially evident in patients receiving postmastectomy radiotherapy. (1)

Discuss your treatment and reconstruction options with your surgical team.

Microthane® implants are manufactured according to the process described in patent application EP 26184379.1 of 10 June 2026, while maintaining the proven technology.

Is reconstruction after breast cancer the right choice?

Breast reconstruction is a very personal choice after breast cancer surgery. For some patients, it helps them restore a sense of body confidence and well-being. For others, choosing not to have reconstruction is equally valid.

After a mastectomy, patients may choose between breast reconstruction, an external breast prosthesis, going flat, or wait a few months or years before making a decision.

Reconstruction may be performed with breast implants, the patient’s own tissue, or a combination of both. It can also be performed at the same time as mastectomy, known as immediate reconstruction, or at a later stage, known as delayed reconstruction.

A conversation with the breast cancer team, including a breast surgeon and plastic or reconstructive surgeon where appropriate, can help patients understand the benefits, limitations, recovery and possible complications of each option. The decision should be informed, unhurried where clinically possible, and centered on what feels right each patient.

Regular breast screening is an important part of breast health for people without symptoms. Mammography can identify breast changes before they can be felt, supporting earlier diagnosis and timely treatment.

Across Europe, the European Commission recommends organised mammography screening for women aged 50 to 69 and suggests offering it to women aged 45 to 74. Screening is generally recommended every two or three years, depending on age and the national programme. (1)

Recommendations vary between countries and may differ for people with a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, known genetic mutations, previous chest radiotherapy, dense breasts or other individual risk factors.

Speak with your doctor about your personal risk and the screening schedule recommended in your country. Be familiar with the normal look and feel of your breasts, and seek medical advice promptly if you notice a new or unusual change. Do not wait for your next scheduled screening appointment!

How important is it to have different solutions available to adapt reconstruction to each patient’s anatomy and individual journey?

Breast reconstruction should always be tailored to each individual patient and designed around her specific needs.

Every woman has unique anatomical characteristics that need to be carefully considered and respected when planning the reconstruction. There is no single reconstructive approach that can be suitable for every patient. In addition, each patient’s oncological journey may be different, and the reconstructive plan needs to take this into account. This is why a multidisciplinary approach, involving the different specialists within the breast unit, is essential.

Fortunately, today we have many different reconstructive solutions at our disposal. As plastic surgeons, it is both challenging and rewarding to be able to combine these options and develop a personalised plan for each patient, taking into consideration her anatomy, her oncological journey and, importantly, her own wishes. In conclusion, having different solutions available allows us to provide the best possible reconstruction, tailored to each patient. – Dr Diletta Maria Pierazzi, plastic surgeon at Ospedale San Donato di Arezzo

When chemotherapy comes before surgery

For women receiving chemotherapy before breast cancer surgery, immediate breast reconstruction may still be an option.

Clinical studies support immediate prepectoral reconstruction with Microthane® implants following neoadjuvant chemotherapy, with favorable safety and quality-of-life outcomes. (1, 2)

Speak with your breast surgeon and oncology team about the reconstructive options available to you.

Microthane® implants are manufactured according to the process described in patent application EP 26184379.1 of 10 June 2026, while maintaining the proven technology.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide.

According to the latest global estimates, published in 2026 and based on 2024 data, around 2.4 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer worldwide (1,2).

Prioritise your breast health. Be aware of changes in your breasts, seek medical advice promptly if something does not feel right, and follow the screening guidance issued by your national health authority.

Approximately 80% of breast cancers occur in women with no specific risk factors other than s*x and age, so early detection, timely diagnosis and access to appropriate treatment can improve outcomes. (1,2)
