Over the past few days, I’ve been assisting Perry Holloman in his Deep Bodywork training at Kientalerhof, and I’ve been thinking a lot about how we actually learn bodywork.
We can study anatomy, techniques and principles, but at some point the learning has to move from understanding something with our minds to knowing it through the body.
We receive the work ourselves, we practice, we get feedback, we try again. And over time, something that once required concentration begins to feel more natural. Our hands become more sensitive. We sense more. We begin to respond to the person in front of us instead of simply following what we have learned.
For me, this is one of the most beautiful parts of learning bodywork. Knowledge gradually becomes experience, and experience becomes something we can draw from without having to think about every single step.
In four weeks, we begin our 100-Hour Esalen® Massage Professional Training in Portugal, where we’ll spend two weeks learning in exactly this way: through seeing, receiving, practicing, sensing, reflecting and doing it again.
A few places are still available.
