WHY DOES MUSCLE TENSION KEEP COMING BACK?

You know that stubborn spot in your neck, shoulders or back that seems to tighten up again, even after a good massage?

Sometimes, these sensitive areas are associated with what we call myofascial trigger points.

They can contribute to local pain, referred pain and restricted movement. Yet the discomfort you feel in one area may be connected to how other parts of your body move, compensate and respond to ongoing demands.

This is why working with tension involves more than simply applying pressure to a painful spot.

Myofascial Energetic Release (MER) explores the relationship between muscles, fascia, movement and the body's patterns of holding tension.

Through skilled touch, sustained pressure and movement, practitioners work with the tissues to support greater mobility, body awareness and ease.

Where in your body does tension seem to return most often?

Every body carries its own story. Every person brings something into this world that no one else can.

In bodywork, we see this every day. The way someone breathes, moves, holds tension, expresses emotion, or finds their way back to themselves is deeply individual.

And perhaps that’s what makes this work so meaningful.

Healing is about discovering who you are beneath the patterns you’ve learned, the expectations you’ve carried, and the ways you’ve adapted along the way.

Your uniqueness is something to explore, honour, and embrace.

Leave your mark. In your own way. 🌿

Pain is often the body's way of telling us that something needs attention.

Sometimes it comes from physical strain, repetitive movements, or an old injury. Other times, stress and emotional tension can influence how we experience it.

We get so used to pushing through discomfort that we sometimes forget to ask what's actually happening.

Where is the tension coming from? What makes it worse? What helps it ease?

Learning to listen to your body means becoming curious about these patterns, understanding your limits, and recognising when something needs care.
Your body is communicating. Are you paying attention?

Thank you, Aisha, for your openness and for sharing such a personal experience with us. ❤️

Your story offers a glimpse into what can happen when we begin to explore the deeper layers of tension held in the body.

Through Myofascial Energetic Release (MER), we learn to work with fascia, touch and the body's responses, creating space for greater awareness, movement and release.

A massage therapist asks you to relax your shoulders. You think you already have. Then they soften a little more.

That moment can be surprising. How long have you been holding them like that?

Tension can become part of the way you sit, work, or get through a difficult conversation. Gradually, “tight” starts to feel like your usual resting position.

In Myofascial Energetic Release, we explore that familiar effort through touch, breathing, and movement. Sometimes the interesting discovery is how much you can soften while still feeling supported.

What do you catch yourself holding: your shoulders, your jaw, or your breath?

Muscles get most of the credit, but fascia is doing a lot of the work behind the scenes.
It's the connective tissue that wraps around every muscle, organ, and nerve, letting everything glide smoothly against everything else.

Research backs up what practitioners have long noticed by hand: a 2019 study in the Journal of Anatomy found that older adults have measurably thicker fascia in the lower back compared to younger adults, and that thicker fascia was linked to reduced flexibility. Fascia thickness differs substantially between older and younger individuals, with elderly people showing higher fascial thickness in the low back region specifically.

Separate research on aging muscle tissue found a clear mechanism behind this: aging increases collagen buildup while decreasing hyaluronan, the fluid that keeps tissue lubricated, and this combination stiffens the tissue and reduces its adaptability. Less hydration, less glide, more restriction.

The encouraging part: fascia responds to how you move it. A 2024 randomized controlled study found that both static and dynamic stretching measurably reduced fascia stiffness, not just muscle stiffness, immediately after the session.

Fascia isn't just packaging. It's tissue that changes with age, and tissue that responds to how you work with it.

The calf does far more than move the foot.

With every step, the tissues of the lower leg help absorb force, control the movement of the ankle and propel the body forwards. When this area loses elasticity, the body still finds a way to move but it may begin borrowing movement from somewhere else.

The foot may turn out. The knee may change its path. The hip may work harder. The pelvis and lower back may adapt to compensate for movement that is no longer available at the ankle.

This is why persistent tension in the calves cannot always be understood as an isolated problem or something that simply needs stretching.

In Myofascial Energetic Release, we work with the quality of the tissue, the relationship between different structures and the way the whole body responds to touch. Slow, precise pressure can reveal areas that feel dense, guarded or disconnected and create space for movement to reorganize.

The point is not to force the calf to relax. It is to help the lower leg participate in movement again, so the rest of the body no longer has to compensate for it.

Sometimes the place that hurts is carrying the consequences. The restriction may be much closer to the ground.

Pain between the shoulder blades often makes us want to stretch harder or press directly into the “knot”. But the painful muscle is not always a shortened muscle.

The rhomboids help stabilize the shoulder blades. When the shoulders remain drawn forwards and the upper back rounds, these muscles can spend hours working from a lengthened position. What feels like tightness may actually be fatigue, overload and the effort of preventing the shoulders from travelling even further forwards.

This can also become part of a protective pattern. During prolonged stress or after overwhelming experiences, the body may reduce movement through the chest, draw the arms closer and organize itself around defense. The response involves the whole nervous system - not trauma trapped inside a particular muscle but the rhomboids may still carry part of the ongoing muscular workload.

This is why repeatedly stretching or attacking the painful spot may bring only temporary relief. The body may need support through the chest, ribs, breath, shoulders and nervous system - not more pressure on the area already working hardest.

Where you feel the pain is not always where the pattern began.

What if the area you keep stretching is already working from a lengthened position?
